Tub Potato Disease.—Hon. Lymanßeqd.of Maryland, communicates to the Baltimore Ameri can of yesterday the particulars of ! his micros copic discovery showing tho cause of the disease. Hia examination, he says, “have refealed facts of vast importance to agriculturist#, both ia America and Europe. Id 1845 the United States Patent Office published various communications letters, extracts, Ac., upon the potato disease. The first scientific -examination ia the United States was made in the State of Hew York, In 1844. The publication of this investigation induced many persons ia this country to form opinions that fungi caused the disease. The same opinion also prevailed in Europe. Atmos pheric influence was soother theory. Insects upon the vines and leaves another. “My microscopic examination and experi ments commenced at Waltham, Mias, in 1861. In June of that year, I found the under leaves on my Polhto stalks turning yellow—some quite dead—while the tops and leaves and also the leaves and stalks of-utber MUs continued quite thrifty and green. This peculiar circumstance, thus early in the season, indaeed close observa tion and oorefnl examination into the pheno menon.- A query naturally arose— canfungus or atmosphere act thus partially upon the_plani ? Is there not some other predisposing cause pre vailing? From this investigation I felt, confi dent that insects or worms had attacked, these plants at the roots. “Acting from this impression I examined the roots, but with tbe natural vision no insects were found. Tho microscope, however, reveal ed myriads of insects on the seed tubers, roots and stalks under ground. The attack upon the latter, at the lower joint, was visible in spots or marks resembling iron rust. “Potatoes which I had in jars and flowerpots in my shed, covered from any exposure, (experi ment tobefs.) exhibited nnder the microscope, similar insects—and tubers taken from my cel lar, at this lime, had insects on those which were sprouted. Thus in three eeparat* and en tirely dttevnilar petition!. Insects, similar in eve ry respect, were found evidently anhsisting upon the sap of tho sprouts and vines. This revealed to mo unquestionable fvidence that,' during tbe early growth of the plant, insects’ ravages produced deterioration by the draining' of the sap from the vital part, this causing tbe disease. Tbe insects being only microscopic, rendered it extremely difficult to discover the nidus or hibernating spot of their eggs. “Early in my researches, however, I became satisfied, from the position of tbe young insects, that the eggs would be found near or under tbe eyebrows of the potatoes This proved to be correct. It was not until 1860 that I first found the eggs. They are found imbedded in the very sprouts and in the skin near the eyes, but only with a powerful microscope and by tbe Ught of the unclouded nun can itiey be found. During the period from 1851 to* 1856 my experi ment# in cultivation and otherwise were contin ued. Eince tbe latter date t\fcve watched as before, (sealed in glass jars a&A;%ther»l*e,) the development of the labors, embryo pro gress of tbe eggs to tjbe first bnlatfitanotina °f the tiny insects and fbeir attack upon tbe ten der sprouts, the effects of their ravages and the progress of their poison infused into the vine* causing This insect ii tho Alphit," Oa rue Cuasqb or Sbsd. —A writer on Scotch Agriculture, treating of barley says ; “The desire to ohooge seed is not now so gen eral as formerly ; indeed some districts rarely do it. There are, undoubtedly, facts showing the beneficial effects of changing seed ; but where the condition of the land Is maintained, and tho crops properly ripened, the necessity of the change of seed may be doubted. Oo one farm in Mid-Lothian, the same barley lias been raised without change for forty years, and in favorable seasons this grain has reached (he ex traordinary weight of GO lbs. per bubel.” It is oar opinion, that when tho land is well tilled and manured, the seed good to begin with, sea sonably sown harvested and taken care of; there ia no advantage, as a general thing, but rather a disadvantage resulting from the changing of field nod garden seeds, whether grains, beans, peas, bulbs or roots. Propagate from the best, u the maxim always to be heeded. Barley tint weighs 60 lbs. per bushel will make stronger and more vigorous plants than that weighing but 50 lbs. “Like begets like,” i 8 an old and true maxim. Hence, let the farmer go through bis wheat field and select the largest aod best filled beads for seed, and conlioue this for a series of years, and he will thus essentially increase the yield per acre. So of maize, oats and rye. 'The farmer should select his seed corn in this way, and never from tho crib, for in the latter case, it may havebeated and tbusimpalred its vitality or even destroyed it entirely. A gardner for several yearspunued a similar course with hie beans, selecting only the longest pods for seed, and by so doing greatly'increased the yield, os every year produced a relatively larger proportion of long pods, well filled. Henco it being true, that good qualities are transmissible uot less than bad ones. It is of the first importance that you have good seed. Having made sore of this, tbero is no necessity for changing seed, incarring tho daQger of in troducing fool seed into your grounds. Would that farmers and gardoera might practice these hints and save Lbeir own seed, as indicated, rather than use the gleanings, os is too often done, especially with garden products. Of the coinmen Scotch barley, the variety cal led Chevelier is best, having produced 70 bush els per aore, CO lbs. per bushel. These ia now in Rochester, N. Y. t a man aged one hundred and six years, whose an cestry, together with his own progeny ; will ex hibit one of the strangest mixtures of races ever heard of. His name is John Shenandoah O’Brien, and was born in Boston, in 1752. Ilia father was an Irishman, and his mother an Indian, of theOaeidatribo'. When twelve old be was sent to Fr'ance, and there edacated as a physician. He returnedto America and served in the Revolutionary War ; afterward he went back to France, and there married the daughter of the Emperor of Morocco, by whom he had eight obildren; With her he lived in the United States for some time, and she died. He then married an Amerioan woman, descended from the Teutonic line, and after her death, married auegress, who waefiftyyeareyouoger than him self, and by whom be had four ohildren. In his children are united the blood, of the Celt, the Teuton, tho African, and tho North American Indian. Capture or a “Ms emaid.”— ln the nets of Mr. John Anderson, on the Fourth, a mermaid, or angle-fish, nearly six feet long, and one hun dred pounds weight, was caught this Week.— The wings of this “wonder of the deep,” whioh has a face like that of a frog and a tail like that Of a shark, are eight inches long. Before hew ing caught the fishermen saw it raise Itself up right in the water and then fly over the surface like a bird. While diving it-was ought in a turbot net The belly is pure white; the back Is light brown ; the skin being rough like that of n shark or dog-fish, < The wings ‘are not nn* like two wings ofa thick skate, and the teeth re semble those of a shark. The fish measures three feetacrossthe wings.—Sco (man. A Fat Fish.—The riskawit. a fish of Lake Superior, is reported to be the fattest- fish that kwlms either in fresh or salt water. The fisher men sav that one of tbeie, when hong by the tail In the hot son of a summer’s day, will melt and entirely disappear except the bones. In paoking about fifty barrels, a few seasons ago,* M Isle Royals, one of the fishermen made two find a half barrels of oil from the heads and leaf fat alone, without the least injury to the markta bleness of the fish. Besides .this leaf fat* the fat or oil is disseminated in a layer of fiat and a layer of lean, throughout the fish. They nre too fat to bo eaten fresh, and are pot up for Jnarket like the lake white fish aid Mackinaw front. <**•; : : • -•* •".. >•« • . -- Thb Natural'A’ or tub Musical Scale— Where it Combs from. —J. Nickles, in bis cor respondence dated Paris, February 28, 1858, treating of several novel and Interesting topics of the "Natural Diapason,” says: Mr. Cagniard Lata or, ons oftbe principal French Acousti cians, has satisfied himself that he hears the word “la,” of the musical scale sounding with in his head when he agitates itfrom side to ride; Mr. Jo bard has confirmed this observation in himself, and assertathat any one can verify it if he will disembarrass bis neck of tbe cravat and collar and place himself apart from all noise. Mr. Jobard says this natural ‘la,’ is caused by tbe contact of tho malleus against the incus of the ear; a contact easily made by rapid move ment oftbe head. t Ho goes still father and asserts that those who on ahakiogtjie head hear two ‘las,’ in perfect unison; are born musicians they have the voice and ear perfectly correct. But those who hear the ‘la* only In eoe ear have an imperfect appreciation ofsoands, while those who perceive two different Bounds,/la’ and another jiole, not only do not love music, but detest and avoid it; and he proposes by this method to discover who may become musicians. Tho poiot whether the note produced by thjs quick motion of the head is the same in aU per sons is yet underdiscussion. This question will be a difficult one to solv. as the da' of theopera ra of Paris differs from that of the theatre of Strasburgh, Lflle, Vienna and London, and is becoming more and mere elevated, so that' in twenty years it yrill correspond to many more vibrations than now, and be, therefore, still more acute. Tux Next Year's Whbax Fiblds—Ai soon as tbe present harvest is over, the next thing in order is to get in the seed for another. crop. Farmers have had a pretty severe lesson this season, ia consequences, a part of which were purely providential aud-beyond homau control or foresight, and consequently paaLcryiog about:' but another part—and we leavo it to careful and honest people to say, eaotf for themselves, in how much—was the direct and palpable result of natural and reasonable effects following a mis management which is inexcusable, or worse than that. It has often been demopsrated that thorough farming not only pays bettor* in all seasons, but is fur safer in extreme ones, that it seems strange that people who can so ill afford it will continue to throw away hard labor injhalf doing their work;'where they get no pay.
