Tub Psasant Revolt in Ltssia.—A UUor
from Brussels, July 8, says: **Wo h4Te now
received more accurate accounts of the outbreak
of (he peasantry in Esthoaia, tho Importance of
which can hardly- be overrated, particularly on
account of the neighborhood- of. that province
to St. Petersburg. Serfdom proper was put an
end to In Ealhoniaaml in the rest of the BaDio
provinces of Russia more than forty yean'sgo
under Alexander 1. The present measures of
emancipation donoi effect the Esthonianpeasants
at all; but this seems only to have excited them
the more, and what they now claim is free pos-.
session of tho Und which they at present bold
on hereditary tenure from the nobility. The
rising is general all along the coast and has com
pelled the nobility to soek raftige in Revel.
The engagement xnseUoafd yasterday took
place between part of ih# garriMfiefßejel and
a body of peasants, about one Ujjgusand strung,
who are moving to and fro eneonniging tho oth
ers to revolt* They as yet have’ no'olher arms
than sticks and clubs, pitchforks and sharpen
ed poles: but they are so excited that they were
not afraid at all of tbo soldiery, whose numhsrs
iris true, were bat rmalt. The..soldiers were
eoon .overpowered by the large number of the
peasants, and left altogether fifteen men, four
officers among them, kilted; while of the peas
antryaboot forty may have been killed. The
chief scat of tho insurrectionary movement
Beems to be very near Revel itself; but even at
Borpat, which is situated at llie northern part
of Livonia, ami which la likewise peoplea by
the Esthoian race, symptoms of an approaching
outbreak haro been observed.”

Whilst wo ahould, os Pennsylvanians, fool proud
that the enterprise of oar cidteni has constructed an
excellent rood, by which oar two great oitica aro
brought nigh together, yet the blush' of shamo is

all tho mighty energies of the managers of that road
lure been devoted in unceasing efforts to oppress
tno pooplo of tho State, and to promote tha interests
alono of that portion of the peoplo who happen to he
so fortunate as to reside between tho SchaylkiU and
the Delaware.
Having closely watched tho movements, and being
■perfectly familiar with tho policy that has been por
sned by those who haTo had charge of tho road, I
purpose devoting a portion of my tlmo : lo the prepa
ration of life-like skotebos of the same, in order *h»t
the people may bo made acquainted wilh the past
history of h company that now has tho assurance to
ask an annual appropriation of several hundred
thousand dollars, Cram the treasury of the State; to
enable it to carry on “Insane competition" for through
freight—or, in other words, has tho impadenco to
demand, as a right, tho repeal of the tonnage *«t,
which it solemnly coranantod topay, foreror,in con
sideration of the importance of the privileges con
ferred upon U by tho Act of Incorporation.
I should have been pleased if on abler pen than
mino could havo been secured for this Important pur
pose, but haviog waited in vain for some of our'
gifted writers to davoto their talents to this object, I
havo been indaced to attempt to do what others could
have more ably done. My object shall be to toll it
plain story In a plain and trnthfal style, and should
I succeed in arousing the people—the tax-payers of
my native State—to tho importance of guarding well
their interests, and closely watching tho movement*
of a dangerous monopoly, my object will be accom
plished. • - .
TERMS*
, Tho Pennsylvania llailroad Company was incor
porated in the Spriog of 1546, and the construction
of tho road was carried on with an energy that de
wves tho highest commendation. The President,
Directors, Engineers, and all others concerned, are
entitled to great praise for accomplishing so macbln
a very limited period of time. Before “old fogies"
were scarcely awaro that work had commenced, the
neigbings of the “iron bone" were heard on the
highest poaks of the Alleghenies and were reverber
ated through the valleys of the Susquehanna and
Jnniata. As early as tho Pall of 1850, the road was
so far advanced as to form a connection with the
Portago ltoad, near Hollidaysborg. During the sub
sequent Winter, extensive arrangements were made
by tho company to do a heavy freight haziness by
railroad from Philadelphia to Johnstown, and thence
via canal to Pittsburgh. Simultaneously with these
arrangements was the policy adopted to make un
ceasing efforts to depreciato, the value of tho State
Improvements, This policy was faithfully pursued.
All tbe energies of Mr. Thompson's gigaotio mind
were nnceasUigly devoted to the accomplish men t»of
his favorite policy, and the result has boen that our
great chain of canals ami railroads has been given,
almost as a “free-will offering,” to appease the in
satiate demands of this monster monopoly. C.
JonssTowx, Pa.
Weeds.—Wo often soe .fields, exhausted by long
cultivation, and "thrown out" to replenish them
selves, covered with a' heavy growth of weeds. So
for from renewing their energies, such are Incoming
more exhausted, and will eontlnno more so as long 1
as the weeds are allowed to run riot on them.
No crop exhausts the soil more than a crop of weeds.
Actual and accurate experiments prove, that in
fields where tbe woods are allowed to grow
with tho crop* they diminish the erop at least
ono-fourth. Ttjey rob the earth of the food required
for tbe growth of nseTnl plan tv, and when the farmer
turns his land cot to rest and replenish Hs energies,
he is but exchangingone.kind ofcrop'for aetill worse
one, if ho allows the weeds to grow and mature their
feeds.
So important has this matter become, in the view
of scientific agriculturists in England, that coarts are
directing the attention of grand jurors to theeubject:
and, through them are forcing the attention of the
public to this all-impartial matter.
Tbe Irish Itoyal Agricultural Society h&Te resolv
ed, “that at great lejury arises to the fanning classes
from the growth of weeds along the public roads,
whose seeds bejng allowed to ripen and ehed, aro
spread over the adjoining lands, a circular beim
mediatcly addressed to the grand jurors of the several
counties, soliciting them to give to county
surveyors to make it Imperative upon road con
tractors to cut down and c remove all weeds, more
particularly thistles, docks, and rag weeds," before the
first of Jane, and at such other periods in the year
as may prereot their injurious effeeu to the farmer.”

of my neighbor* who has a row of apple tree* on one
side of his yard has two trees of Lho same kind, one
near hb yard, aed 1 the other some distance off; the
one near it, produces apple* of twice the size, and
more tfaap four times the quantity of the othrr. My
neighbor's trees are about sixty years of age, and
the largest I havo ever seen; a number of them aro
about eight reel in Circumference, at a distance of four
feel from the ground, with a distanco ot sixiy feet
acres* thorn through the heads, and are still growing
rigorously.
}ltit also agreatadxantago to a yard to bayo tree*

Buffering among the Cattle. I hope that thoso who
feel disposed'will try it next fall, as the outlay is *9
small, and the result so sore, that I doubt not they
will bo satisfied, and an addltonal attraction be given
to tbo old homestead. - Aowicol*.
The object of sueh a course is obvious to any one
who reflects for a moment on the fact that tbo seed of
weeds will lie in the ground for years without gemi
nating but’as soon as the earth is plowed for a crop,
spnog into existence. Nomatterhow clean our fields
are kept; if the cqrners of the fences are allowed to
be nurseries from which are scattered seeds for an
annual aupply of weeds. Every thisile-top hueced*
enough to stock acres, aud every burr of dock can
furnish seed for a township.
Let a war orextermlnatlon then be waged against
these posts of the farmer. Maks no truco with a
thistle* dock,, or weed, and besides adding one fourth
totho amount of tho crop, you will ctveyonr farms
a chance to replenish.— Ohio Farmer.
