Cbahlks Maceay in a Slave Pen—The fol
lowing is from a letter of Charles Mackay to tbo
London Illustrated News:
On my first arrival at New Orleans, I lingered
for a few momenta at the open door of a slave
depot, without daring to go in, lest I should bo
suspected of espionage, or mere cariosity, and
expelled. Cat seeing among the company an
eminent merchant of Now York, whose friend
ship I had been fortunate enough to make, and
whom I knew to bo no slave dealer £r .supporter
of slavery. I walked In and joined his party,
drawn thither, liko myself,* by curiosity. On
one side of the room the male slaves, with clean
linen and shining new hols and boots, were ar
ranged; and on the other the females were di3-
f ossd In their best attire, most of them exceed
ugly neat, bat some bedizened with ribbons, of
colors more flaring and tawdry than elegant or
appropriate. I was immediately beset with en
treaties to purchase.
"Bay me,” said a young negroes who spoke
Frenoh and no English; I am a good cook and a
good needlewoman. Boy me.”
"Buy me," said another, in the same langnago
"I am.accustomed to children, and can make
myself useful in the nursery."
I felt a sensation somewhat similar to that of
the first qoalm of sea-sickness to.be so addressed
by my feUow-crcatores—a feeling of nansea, as
if l were about to bo 111. I told tho poor wo
man that I was a stranger, who bad not como to
buy. But they were incredulous; and when at
last convinced they returned to their scats with
a sigh and an expressiolf of deep disapointment
on their dark and-good-humored features, I
entertained ench a hatred of slavery, that bad
it been in my power to abolish it in ono instant
off the face of the earth by the mere expres
sion of my will, at that instant, slavery would
have oeased to exist.
I then walked to the male side of the elavo
mart, where I was beset by similar entreaties,
urged in every vsalety of tone or manner and
by almost every variety of laborer and hamli
crafts man. Somo were accustomed to the cot
ton and some to the sugar plantation; some were
carpenters, some gardners, some coachmen,
some barbers, somo waiters, but all equally am
our to be sold. One man—who to my inexperi
enced eye, seemed as white as myself, and whom
1 at once put down in my own mind as an Irish
man of the purest qoaflty of the county of Cork
got up from bis scat os I passed and asked me
to buy him.
"I am a good gordner, your honor," said he
with an unmistakable brogue; "I am also a
bit of a carpenter, and can look after the hor
ses, and do any sort of job about the bouse."
"Bat you are joking," said 4 ."you are an
Irishman!" . _ -
"Ny father was an'lrhhnuu5 v bo said.
At this moment the slave deafer and owner of
the depot camo up.
"Is thero not a mistake hero?" I inquired.
‘'This is awhite man,”
“His mother war a nigger,” be replied. “We ‘
have ■ometintes modi whiter men for sale than
he is—Look at hi* hair aad lips. TbOro to no
mistake about him.”
Again the sickness came over me, and I lon
ged to get into the Open &ir L to breath a purer
atmosphere. "I would like to bay that mao and
set him free.” I said to one of our party.
“Ton would do him no good,” wa9 the reply.
“A manumitted stave lias selJom any self-reli
ance or energy, Slavery so degrades and crip
ples the moral faculties of the negroes that they
require the crutch, even in freedom, and cannot
walk alone. They find it imporeiblo to compete
with tbs poor whites, and if left to themselves,
sink into tbo lowest and most miserably paid
occupations.”
**Yoa are an Englishman and a traveller,”
said the slave-dealer, "and 1 should be much
obliged to you If you woald put any questions
to the negroes.”
**What questions !”said I. ‘‘.Shall task them
whether they prefer freedom or slayary ?”
“I don’t mean that,” ho replied. “Ask them
whether Ido not treat them well; whether I
am not kind to them; whether they do not have
plenty to.eat and drink while they are with me V
I told him I had no donbt of tho fact: that
they looked clean, comfortable and well fed ;
bat—-and in that “but” lay tbe whole case—
though the worthy dealer of New Orleans was
totally Incapable of comprehending The
same feeling seems to exist all through the slave
slates—but moro of this hereafter.
Mr. Moarnv who arrived oul by t tha Africa,
quietly walked into tho 8L George’s Chess Club
one night last week, and; after beating Mr. Lew*
en, who is a recognized champion, with the
the greatest ease,- offered a challenge to Mr.
Staunton, the British Caur de Lion of the noblo
game. Mr. Sl&unton accepted the proposition,
sat down, went to work, almost cleared the
board in some twenty moves, and was about
withdrawing in contempt, when be was arrested
by a “ check” which in three moves more grew
into a "mate.” You may imagiao the con*
eteraation of the hero'and of the lookers on.—
"May I ask your name air 1” said Mr 8. "Cer
tainly sir,” replied hisyonog antagonist. "My
name sir Is Morphy,” "Oh of America ?” "Yes
sir.” Ah! then, lam sorry, but I am notym'fern
play just now. 1 should not rathor risk another
game jost at present. And so Mr. Biauttcn with
drew. The event has excited quite a sensation
in the world of ohess as was bred in the world of
yachtsmen by the victory of the America; and
Mr. Morphy bos made ap a match with Ander
son, the Hungarian, hpon which all Eoglandlhat
playelh ohess will, of oonree, be vehemently bet
ting in the eourso of a fortnight. Yon may re
gard this hs set off, perhaps, against the defoat
of Mr. Ten Broeok's horse*, though it should be
remembered that the bottle even llioro.ls not yet
given up.—London Tana.

Grass in the Parka or London.—The Gar
tlcnors* Chronicle, an English publication, says
that there is a prospect of the total destruction
of tho grass in the really beautiful parks of the
British metropolis. In tho Green Pork,
Stafford House, and in the Regent s Fork, (he
ftno velvet turf is entirely disappearing. “If
you walk,” sayu thcChroniclo, “over tho ground
you see little except dirty tufts of, a tow-uko
substance, (the remains of the herbage that has
perished, )with holes between, through which the
enemy has refloated to his subterranean quar
ters.” Tho decay soems to proceed in circles,
constantly witloning, tho surface of which in
tho morning a£o covered with grubs, and these
in tho afternoon are found in countless numbers
underneath tho sod. Rolling the turf and
other remedies have been tried ia vain. .The
insects known to childrenas “Daddy Looglegs,"
or “Harry Longlegs,” is the parent of this
mischiof. It deposits ifaeggs, by thousands, in
tho these prodnce tho grub which feed
upon and destroys tho tender roots of-the grass.
ProbaDly many of our rural readers havo fre
quently seen this insect in tho act of thus de
positing its eggs, without being aware of the
jitcht of Us curious movements or Uhe impor
tant results which wero to follow: On almost
any evening in the late Sommer, or early Fall
the female of this gracefal-iaeeot may be soen
performing rapid gyrations ou tho surfooe of a
smooth turf, spinning round on its dorsal ex
tremity with suoh velocity that Us wings and
legs nro scarcely visible. The horn-like
terminus of Us body is thus used as an
auger orgimlel, and in the hole thus bored in
the turf tho inseot deposits a number of eggs
which aro hatched in the Spring and produce
tho “leather-coaled grubs,” by the
Chronicle os being so destructive. Wo imagine
that nDy Application in tho late Sprlng.or Sum
mer, is too lato to becomo aremedy. " r

The .following letter, which appears in the
London 7Tm« of July 7, respecting the adven
turous traveller, Dr. Livingstone, will bo read
with interest:
Sir,—having seen it reported the above celo
brated missionary and explorer was at tbo Cape,
I beg to inform your readers that a letter was
received at Hadley last Saturday from Mrs. Liv
ingstone, dated Cape Town, May, 19th, 1858, in
which sho states that they arrived at the Cape,
tho 21sL of April, and that the doctor left for
the Zambesi about 10 days after accompanied
by a ship of war, which will safely
over the bar. She adds : “You will be glad to
hear that the people he left at Tele, are still
waiting for him. ITow delighted they will be to
see him again. I think tho expedition will have
reached tbo Zambesi by this time.”
Dr. Livingstone met with a most oordial and
gratifyingreoeption fromhlsfriendsattbe Cape.
They presented him with a small silver box con
taining a Booguineas, and entertained
him at a grand dinner. lam sorry to say he
has beets obliged to leave Mrs. Livingstone be
hind, as she suffered so dreadfully from sea
sickness that it was doubtful whether she could
reach the East Coast alive. She intends pro
ceeding with herparents, Mr. and Mrs. Moffat,
to his missionaryslalionatKaruman,and thence
hopes to rejoin her husband on the Zambesi
some lime next year. :
Gbeat Exhibition at Mcnicii. —Munich is to
take its place in the list of cities whioh have
followed in the wake of London in making great
Exhibitions. In the Crystal Palace of Munioh
there is to be collected examples of the art V»f
all Germany during ' the past century. It is
proposed to commence the show In July, and it
irobably will remain open till October. Further
t has been resolved to celebrate some time in
September, by a mighty jubilee, an important
event in the history of the capital of Bavaria.
In September 1858, for some 700 years Munioh
will have keen a city—wherefore, after the man
ner of Germans, there is to be much well delib
erated enthusiasm excited or at least displayed.
The court-army and burghers,tho local artist,and
poet world are to unite in making a joyful noise
and gay spectacle before themselves and their
visitors. Procesaionsandfestivals, tournaments
ia the open air and balls in (heclose atmosphere
—with all the charms and pioluresqueness of
varied costumes, aro to be colled into requisi
tion. There are many cariosities of old Ger
man life dispersed througout theoounlry, which
aro to be concentrated and made into an exhi
bition. Four railroads now run into Munich,
which will facilitate the great concourse expect
ed l>y the inhabitants. #
