New Camdoniaj—We publish to-day; the advi
ces from the Frazer golamtaeswhiehContinue to
bo highly favorable; muoh richer, in factjdo these
placers appear to bo than any now ’ worked In
California. It is idle to preach against the dan
gets and hardships of the gold hunt, when.one
man con pick op out oftheearththriea thousand
dollars in a few weeks, and another; $7OO in a
shorter Bptce of time. As a natural conse
quence, the gold diggers are leaving! California
by thousands, and rushing northwardlo British
Oregon, or, as it is termed,- New Caledonia.—
Alre&dy.inMay thero. were seven hundred per
sons at the mines, sod the whole river waa cov
ered with canoes, each containing from eeven to
fifteen men, bound for the diggings. Sach was
the universal rush that one hundred of these
craft went up the stream in one fleet. The
town and settlements on. tho shores of.-Puget
Qound had been stripped, of everything like a
oanoe; but, as the article was so much in de
mand, we,suppose that eome shrewd person
most have engaged inhuilding them, Had not
this been so not a third of the number already
sold to miners could ever have beta obtained
ihere.-.-.if, o'.*. :
The vigorous manner in which the, officers of
the Brilieh government and of the Hudson’s Bay
Company have interposed their authority to main* -
taitt tho rights of the government and of the
corporation, and enforce usual Brilieh- regula
tions, deserves especial notice. Our enterpris
ing American follow citizens were rather too
quick Tor them at first, but the Governor and
Company agents nevertheless acted i promptly,
and appear to have effectually got the control of
affairs, by placing British vessels of war in the
sound, and rivers, appointing law offioers, exact
ing license fees, &e. 80 far no one can reason-'
ably complain of this, for, as the country does
not belong to us, our citizens have n 6 right to
Us treasures unless permitted to gather them
by the owners of the soil Moreover,' the same
regulations established in New Caledonia were
carried out effectually in Australia. There is,
however, reasonable ground of objection to the
attempt of the Hudson's Bay Company to mo
nopolize the business of furnishing the mining
regions with supplies. At the last accounts
the diggers were obliged to pay the most exorb
itant prices for provisions, flour being held at
$lOO per bbl, and beef $1,50 per lb. It is evi
dent, from the great rush to thimines from
California, that the new region is destined soon
to become very populous,. the numbers being
probably only limited by the extent, of the
mines. In Australia a very short.time. sufficed
"to crowd into the mines somefifly thousand gold
seekers, nad * much greater marvel was witness
ed in California. Now, suppose that one cor
poration had sought to keep tho monopoly of
supplying all these people with goods and pro
visions. Nothing but endless trouble would
have ensued. In fact, we do not:cohrider the
thing practicable In view of well known
reckless and desperate character ofltie minors:
and being as dangerous as II 4« Imprudent, the
attempt had belter be disconWued, unless tho
Hudson's Bay Company waffe the miners to
revolt and declare theeountry^kdependent.’
As yet we do not learn much respecting the
known extent of tho mining region, perhaps be
cause the miners have not yet beeomo sufficient
ly numerons to induce explorations beyond the
places first developed, and which have proved »o
rich, and, in eome degree, owing to Rie floods
having forced a suspension of operations fora
couple of months. With Ro many! hundreds
rushing up to the golden river, it will, however,
soonbethoroughly explored id every*direction.
Already the Americana write back to California
that the maps are *ll wrong, and some Of them
have set to work to draw in their rode way
sketches more correct, showing the true geogra
phy of the region. It was in this way that we
first became thoroughly acquainted with the
interior of California.
Just as we expected would l>o the ; case, the
gold fewer has been a great piece of good fpHtrae
to Washington territory,.whose towns on Bell
ingham Bay and Paget Sound are suddenly
springing up into cities of much commercial im
portance. Thus far, Port Townsend stems to
have token Ure' lead, and to have absorbed the'
bulk of the benefits of the gold fever, because U
wos the easiest place td teach by eea, and had
commauicallon by the sound with.pfoicr river.
The town of Whatcom, oh : Bellingham Ray. id
much nearer the Tivcr, but offered few facilities
compared with port Townsend, and • therefore
was at first neglected; it had since token a won*
detfat start, and, from being a feeble outpost
of civiliied settlement, has suddenly sprung op
loto a bustling c\Ly.—Philadelphia X. Amer.
Noble Coeduct.— Daring the crisis last fall,
Messrs. West & Caldwell, dealers In dry goods
used in the hat and cap buslneissr at 62 Broad
way, were compelled to suspend. forth
with called a meeting of their creditors,, and
laid a statement of their affairs before them. A
oommiUee was appointed, who, after a thorough
investigation, unanimously recommended that
the creditors accept GOeento on the dollar.: This
was with like unanimity aoeeded to, and the
firm discharged. On the first day of July in
stant, the creditors each received a printed cir
cular stating that . the. assets had tuntoit oat
much better than there was reason ito expcct
when (he compromise wae’made, and that enclos
ed would be found a cheek for the fall balaooe
and interest. ■ The checks were foand os statod,
and amounted in the aggregate to over $86,000,
not one cent of which were they under any
legal obligation to pay. Wo would rather have
tbo consciousness of this act, with the letters of
hearty acknowledgement that come showering
in upon Messrs. West & Caldwell, in response to
their circular, than to receive $BO,OOO multiplied
by ten. One of the creditors (aleadiog firm)
informed them that they hod token the liberty to
have the circular framed end hung up ia their
office. Blessed and refreshing in these degen
erate days,' are such instances of high and 1
honorable fidelity ta the T. Post.

JoDoa Lyscn in Indianan—-A Mas Tabu?
and Fxathbud.—A married man named Coons
who is respectably connected, was Umd and
feathered.on tho night of. the Clh InsL, hi Craw
fordriUe, Indiana. The Lafeyette Courier ofthe
7th, h*s the following particulars:.
- “It seems that the. gay Lothario has been in
correspondence for' some months past with a
respectable, young lady of that town, and had
proposed an elopement, to. whioh she consented.
By arrangements, tho deluded girl was to go to
Ladoga, oni the pretense, of visiting some rela
tives, and he was to follow the'next .day. and
joining there, leave together on the,, first-train
for the South. Accordingly, on Monday she
.went down'to Ladoga, and was followed yester
day morning by tho gay deceiver. In the mean
time the peoplo of Crawfordville had got wind
of the affair, an informal moeting of fifty or
more citizens was held and a committee of five
resolute men appointed, with instructions to
proceed at once to Ladoga and take Coons in
custody.' '
“The committee left on the evening train, and
arriving at Ladoga,.captured him and brought
him* bock on, the 10 o’clock train last night.—
They were met at the depot by a large crowd of
citizens, and tho guilty wretch was escorted' to
tho court-house, whioh had been. 1 lighted up for
the occasion. Judge Ljnchorganized his court
and Mr. Coons, was put upon his trial. Eighteen
love letters over his signature 'apd addressed to
the young ladv whom he Had ‘sought tovictim
ize, were proauoed and md to the multitude.—
No otber evidence was needed, and after a few
speeches had been made by prominent citizens,
the lights wero suddenly extinguished—Coona
caught and dragged to the court house yard—
every stitchof clothing tbrni fromhlsback—a
backet of warm ter poured over his hood, and a
bag of feathers artistically applied.
“A more hideous looking object, Bays our io
«forinant, canqot be imagined. He was coated
from bead to heels. The oommittee took him in
charge and escorted him to the outskirts of the
town, where they humanely provided him with
a suit of. clothing, and by a vigorous application
of soft.soap and lard removed the tar andfeith
ers. He was placed aboard the train for this
city to-day, and leaves by tho Valley Road to-’
night for California.
Tsb Gold Rbuiobs.—The Albeny Evening
Journal calls attention to the fact, that tho gold
discoveries at Frazier,s River, lie just north of
the boundary lino of 49 degrees to which we
backed downlfrom “54*40 or fight."
Though seven. hundred , miles north of San
FranciscOf it is still one or two degrees routA of
tho laUtode of London,, and apparently with a
olimate of mildness from all extremities both of
heat and cold equal to that of the southern
shores of Eoglond. Ons hundredandfifty miles
back from tbe-Pacifio indeed; there lies a range
of mountains reaching up to the regions of per
petual enow. But between that and the coast,
the average temperature is fifty-four degrees for
the year round, i Snow seldom lira more than
three days. Fruittrees blossom early in April,
.and salad goes to head by the middle of Hey, on
Vanoouver’a Island. In ■ parts of thi* region,
wheat yields twenty to thirty bushels to the
acre. Apples, peart,peas-and grain of all kinds
do well. Tho trees are oLglgantic growth, Iron
and copper abouqd,.as does cool, in Vancouver’s
Island, ri that altogether. It bids fait to be early
settled by an enterprizsing and various popula
tion. Between the years 1840 end 1850, we.
gained California by one treaty with Mexico, azfd'
gave up all pretentions to that part of Oregon
lying north of forty nine degrees by another
treaty with Great Britain.
TEABHt
IsTSRKSTiJiG rson tub CoWse Ml.vks.—The
following is from a correspondent of the Journal ,
who knows whereof be affirms, and upon whose
statements the most implicit reliance may be
placed:
Early Uiis morning I returned from a visit to
the National sand Minesota mines: in the latter,'
I had occasion to notice a Very large mass of
copper, which is variously estimated to weigh
100 to 150 tons. The product of this mine, It is
thought, will not vary much from I£o tons per
month for one year -to come.
The acqulsiton of the “ duputed tract” to tho
National mine t&cation, will enable the proprie
tors to make another Minn eft) la mine of it, in
from two ta three years. That mino is now do
ing very well, and within a few months the
product will' bo considerably increased.. The
other mines in the Ontonagon district, are pro
ducing well, the amount of expenditure being
small-in them. - -
Tax Hon. John G. Davis has announced him
self as an Independent Anti-Leoompton Demo

in Convention nominated Mr. Sxcxist, refused
to endorse the course of Mr. Dans in Congress,
