Literacy Polirsxss.—The Parisians are
laughing over the last good story from the Ger
man Watering-Places. It appears that the Prin
cess N., who resided in a sumptuous chateau,
near the Baths of Neowied, sent a dinner invi
tation, according to her hospitablo custom, to
the Major P., an officer on service at the gar
r rt son near by. -The Major chanced to be on
. duty, nnd-was obliged to decline; bat on send
t ing his excuse by his faithful sergeant, he told
* him to bring him his dinner as he 'came back
meaning, of course, that he ahoald go for it to

I much astonished, at first, that her pro

cess soon entered into the joko; and ordering a
I, tpoy to be sumptously laden from her
kitchen, she despatched it by the hands of the
I sergeant and her own' footman.
Astounded nt the magnificence of the “din

senger and soon came to on explanation ; but,
quite too rpirituel to lose the enjoyment of the
luxury, heinvitedin a couple of brother officers
and Ihoy mado a capital feaßt. Only, before
j sitting down, he gave the sergeant five dollars,
and instructed him to go fo tho ooiffeclionerand
procure a splendid castle of sweetmeats, taking
it with his compliments to the Princess.
•AU dutifally done—but her Highness, in con
sideration of the subaltern's so well perform
ing hte duty, sent him out a dollar, for his per
quisite as messenger.
I “Excuso me !” said tho literal sergeant, as
he looked at the one doUar, and supposed; that,
of course, it was to pay for the confectionary he
had bought “Excuse mo, but it cost five!
tour/loUars more, if you please !”
The Princess, by this lime, understood the
character of the man. and she gravely sent out
the other four dollars!
The Major was still at dinner with his feast
ing brother officers, when tho faithful sergeant
enured with tho military tonch to his cap, and,
laid down tho five dollars upon the table.
How many of hia military buttons the gallant
officer burst off, in containing his rago while tho
rpturn of those five dollars was explained, is
not told in tho story!
