C.vjir at Tjngree, 21 miles north of 1 mu-h -gliur, April 27.—As one of the soldiers said, last night,,“We’re a dissipating lot, the whole of us —turning night intoday, like Donnybrook fair." Having halted a day and some odd hours at Fut tebghar, tbe Commauder-in-Ohiefß camp was ordered to make a forced march to Tingrce; ami last night, soon after dinner, preparations werd mado for onr]departure, tho troops under Waif pole, near AUyghnr or AUeguuge, on the Ratn gqoga, being directed to march lo the same place,’ eight or nine miles off, that Sir Colin Campbell might lako the command of the force in person. As the tents were all struck, we slept Jqv calidn." A Nu;ht PicTUßEorrin: Ganc.es, Lc Fliuut or the People.—The head-quarters camp was some distance outside the fort, and in going out, about II o’clock at night, to the tree under which I slept, oue of those grand spectacles Which can only be witnessed io Indian warfare met iny viow. The moon shone brightly ou the Ganges and on white sandy plains beyndl its waters—it lighted ' upon the bridge of boats, which trembled and ; heaved and ehriekod under tho pressure of a steady lino of camels, elephant*** and oxen which went with soft tramp and were lost in the distance in a small black "fetreftk—it brought out in sharp outlines or cost into deep shade (he ruined houses, tbe fort, mosques of the city, the bazaar camp, the figures of the huge animals, which passed us softly, like black clouds—and it revealed thh masses of baggage aoimals escorted by the WiM Sikh horsomen which were streaming to that narrow point whence tlrey were to debouch upon Rohilctrnd; all was life und motion withon' sound, except a hum of voices, the tumult on the bridge, and an occasional shrill flourish on his horn by an ele phant who was anxious to Id!! his friends be was going to battle. Mabcu of tub Trooi-' —la Picture or the Elephant —As tho soil wasl sandy and heavy at the other side of the river for several miles, the march had to bo made on the backs of these grand old creatures, three or which were wait ing in the fort for tho Chief; General Mansfield, and the aids-de-camp; and others were detained for the use of the head quarters camp staff. I had not been long asleep under my treo when I was awoke by Colonel rakenham calling out. “Where is my elephant ! ” very much in the same voice as a man io a club, would ask the waiter for his hat. The elephants were punctual. At the word of the Slahout tbe ancient pachy derm who was to carry the Quartermaster- General, Colonel M’Pherson, Major Stewart, Deputy Assistant Adjutant- General, Dr. Mack innon, surgeon to the headquarters, and myself, knelt down with infinite condecension, end per mitted a ladder to be placed against his side, by which wc mooted lo a contrivance just liko the body of an Irish jaunting car. strapped over his back. "e preferred that mode of mouuliap lo (be more usual tray of putlioff ooo'a foot on ihe an t imal’n proboscis, and holding on by the lower flap of bis huge india-rubber-looking ear, while ; J 1,? * by a gentlo otirl upwards of his omuificent . tnuni, raises Iho rider to this bark—or to the 1 equally populur mode of seizing his tail, and ; ; P ,l ; !in F “Uf f>'oi against his bind leg. which the j animal derates at the word of command till the • j biped is high enough to scramble to bis seat in | the b.iwdah 'Yc sit back, two at each eide, nicely-balanceJ, and, haring undergone two smart shuck* of an earthquake while our friend to two great boaTcs, fore and aft, got t 0 his feet, proceeded on onr journey. 1 cannot say, not withstanding the honor and glon* of the thing, that the elephant is an lurinnfwhich makes a favorable impression as a means of locomotion. The only thing to which 1 c*n compare the l pitchmg fore and aft, a- he riband falls in hi* ' stride, h the riding of a light collier brig in a | tideway, t »ne of our party was soon sickened, I and the others were engaged, with gTcat severi ! of , a, P ec *. in holding on to the sails of tho , vessel * r ltke grim deallrH** a backstay.' • We passed along above tLa.Uttßt-wub ft nighl- I mi.ry sensation, and before morning our line of elephani* baJdeTicalefyJ picked rheir way by fbeir no s< i OTer bridge of boats, and were in njjoßouud, plodding through the crowd of “• au.inferior order—man their destina tion. And so we went on till ‘ftvrn, very sleepy, and very lighlropcy and uoudj- We roused up to an attitude of attention at the sight of a broad nud deep-looking river, which looked anything but inviting under the combined rays of the set ting moon and the rising sun. This was the llauigungft, and the bridges of boats a few yards above us were those which hod been secured by the victory at Allnhgunga, after ihe sad affair at Ilhadamow. The Lord Habib s elephants were just crossing tho bridge, pud to ours were driven to the ford, nnd at once plunged into the stream. - As these sagacious and highly intellectual br ings ar« horribly fond cf practical jokes, wo : watched ihe depth of the water with some amie iy, lost our elephant thopld avoid the trouble of swimming by the eimpki expedient of letting hi- feet drop und walkitg on tho bottom, while the lop of his proboscis, held above water, sup plied him with air; but the stream was not more than six or seven feel dei p,and we crossed with out an involuntary ablul on. Thb Enemy's Camp.— Ye were still in a sandy plain, but a few miles more brought us to the sight of the enemy ’s cnoojp, and of Walpole’*, and soon we came on traces of tho fight, hideous bodies, bloated and dispolored, lying all over tho plain, with flocks of vultures pulling out Lhcir entrails, and dogs crunching their bones. Sometimes these horrid creatures crept inside the hollowed corpse to pick at their lcl-ure, and by their movements gave the dead a revolting imitation of life. These men lying far apart hal f&!!"0 by the sabres of llagart’s Cavalry’ and tbe tire ot Toombs' laud Remington's guns and for ijro or threw ud'»* they marked the line of our pursuit. This must have boon the work oj the insurgent, for our troops had never sot fool in liohilcund since the outbreak of the mutiny. About five o’clook wc came on the siego train, and poor Tod Brown, in charge of it, working like all the Browne in England together—one man with bOO carts, thousands of bullocks, shot, shell, powder, and natives to look after, and all with only ono’hand to help him. Tub Heat.— Then uroso the dead clamor of tho baggago, which always becomes noisy about .day-light, and from our leriaratalo we looked down pityingly oifihe baggage master, Captain Morland, struggling-like Jupiter and tho TRans, "with elephants, nnd camels, and hackcrie. At 'last we pick up tho rear guard, and the whole plain before us expands itself into one vast sea of animals —all for au army of GOOO men. Far in the distance somo tents rise above the dark sea of agitated life, wbtlo and placid, and wo press on with vigor, for the mess fire Is lighted by the road aide, and there is already a. group under a tree nnd round tho tea-pot. The ele phant executes a Liule morceau on his nose -to signify that he is quite aware it is time for his breakfast and for our departure; he kneels down, and wo part with tnutnql satisfaction. Tlngreo is not a desirable and hot. Hero Walpole's -division had just arrived, and our canvas city soon roso up on tho sandy plains, and most of us turned into our shade of 100, 107 and 108 degrees, according to the site of oar tents, for & liule repose. Colonel Sisted, 78tb, and Colonel Leith Hay, OBJ, will net as Brigadiers. Tho army are cautioned against plundering. Commit so Robbery.— Camp Jellalabad, April 27.—Our march this morning from Tingrcc to Jellalabad was only five miles. Tho troops did not go as far as is usual, even at the time of the year and in this country. Tbe first bugle turned us out at 2 30 a. m., but it was 4 a. m. before we started. Tho dispositions wore left to Brig adier General Walpole, in tho general orders of last night, which also contained very stringent orders against plundering, and announced a certainty of three dozen to any ono caught do ing 00, “as many of the inhabitants are favora bly disposed towards ua. Tho morning was cool and pleasant os day broke, and showed the long lino of infantry, cavalry, guns, amunition, siege train, camels and baggage, streaming over the dead level of one of those uniform plains, stud ded with groves, which liohilcund offers to tho eye from the foot of tho Himalayas to the waters of the Ramgunga. As we advanced, we learned that the fort of Jellalabad, which had been oc cupied by obout 165 matohlockmen and sowars, had been abandoned, and that tbe laUer fled so precipitately that they left their horses behind them. * A Deserted Village. —Jellalabad is a small country village in the midst of a rich district, dominated by an old mad fort, which tho enemy mast have been repairing up to yesterday morn ing, aa there wero fresh spade marks in ihescarp of the ditch. It ia aaid the Moulvie was there, but th&l he could not get his followers to stand, and that ho was obliged (o fly to Shahejehnn pore. Our camp was pitched in a magnificent and oxtensivegroveonisiJcthejillage. Ongoing into the village, which contains one ortwoTarge houses of some pretensions, a coupleof mosques etc., it appeared as if the Inhabitants expected to be plundered, for they had shut np their houses, andveTyfeirpwpleweretobeieeniolhe ,Y 9, 1858. streets. Oar sentries were placet! at the out skirts to prorent plundering, bat (he Sikhs are all bat uobiquitous, and scarcely do we pitch our tents than theseactive gentry are mileaaway looting all they meet. The fort, which is built on a high monnd, (probably of remote artificial construction,) is a quadrangular work of mud, . with the walla externally of at least 40 feat in height, and a deep dry ditch, which the enemy are making still deeper. Each side is about 150 yards long. The parapet is broken and recedes in places, bo that it conld bo scaled with little difficulty. A TaisoKEß.—The terreplein (if it can be so called) is high above the level of the ground outside the fort. Inside the fort thera is a kind of keep in the centre; some houses and rude barracks, and the ruins of a large building, which was formerly used as a government school. There were freshly-mado embrasures, without guns, and many articles of dress showed the recent flight of the owners, and loose ropes, and beds, and papers were ly ing in the court yard, which contained a fine deep well. As we returned throagh the deserted streets, we met an English soldier, with a sword and shield on his arm, bohind whom was walking a taU, gaunL Mussulman, with his elbows fastened behind his bock by the folds of his tnrban. “I took him, sir, because ho had this sword and shield, and he's a suspicious-looking fellow,” said the soldier, "'and I like to know what I’m to do with him.” There was something Tery piquant in the notion of this good fellow, who was quite unarmed, having taken a much larger man who had a sword and a shield, and the manner in which he asked us wh&t to do with his prisoner, swaying, as he spoke, a captive gepse by the neck, was very ludicrous. Lootisu. —Wo recommended the Provost Mar slfal, and rode into camp juat in time to see Sir Colin in great wrath with a camp follower brought in for looting, and gave him hearty whacks on the back with tha flat of his sword before bo sent him to get a dozen from the func tionary who is now in suck .request. Two small deputations of Htndboa, poor-look ing villagers, came in to salaam and tender their congratulations to us on their own delivery from Mahometan rule. They told U 3 that our faces were bright, that they lived once more in seeing us, and altogether were exceedingly polite, of fering, moreover, to kill all Mussulmcn, if we would keep them to do so. Sir Colin is going to mark all the houses be longing to families who have relations in the enemy’s cavalry, and threatens that if any at tack is made on our posts, he will cause all those houses to be pulled down. Life is toe Camp. —Kantb, April du. —Again that dreadful first buglo at 111.16 A. M., tfao trumpeting of elephants, the hammering of tent pegs, the gaggling and roaring of camels, the neighing of horses and the myriad voices of camp rising up through the night, till jackalls and wolves erase their concert to the moon, and fly off to have it out undisturbed in more distant and silent topes. At the usual hour, ‘1 A. M., the wbolo force was moving off towards this place, at which wo are now encamped. The country, like that through which we have already passed, was one vast plain—a series of corn field-, cotton aod sugar' plantations, without hedge or ditch, and covered in all directions with rich •• limber, Tho crops have been cut, and the sharp stumps of the cotton are danger ous (o horses feet and horrible to men's legs. Hence my syce wa9 lamed, and hence, at our first halt, your correspondent was lamed by a severe homo kick, for the syce, on account of the cotton stumps, could not come up to hold his horse, which was given to a syce who had another to take care of, and when our half boor’s sleep on the ground was over, and “Prepare to mount' mount'” roused us up, your corres pondent, going over to bis quadruped, which was backing towards the other> horse from the pyce, received a kick between the hip and knee which sent him reeling over, aod obliged him to finish the rest of his journey on the carriage of one of Tofcmb's guns. For two or three days to come, if not more, he must be content to write in a dooly,} using his note book and pencil. The littlp town, outside which wo pitched our tents, was tlesertcd, and the villages along our lino of rnafeh were destitute of inhabitants.— The strictest orders are issueJ against plunder ing. and, indeed, 1 saw Sir Colin Campbell make a charge at some camp followerawho were refreshing themselves in a vegetable gardon, them vicariously, by Major Metcalfs er-in-&."° UnJ ,hr V hln *- but. a* the Command nnd are '* f **** himself, “they swarm like flies, They ddy^WwiLH' 1 *°*® e P OUI of h place.”— the lash resounds forever in B.out provosts are thinning rapidly, owing to uiT l t 0t ,ucessant activity and exercise itf which they pass their days; the camp followers are not to be intimidated from the pursuit of their lawful qalhog, end the development of their natural and almost solitary instinct. This i S tt serious evil, for the cry of distress of those who have been robbed resounds throagh tho land, and empties villages at our approach ; one fel low shouting out that he has been plundered, depopulates a village We learned that the enemy had occupied the town, which, of course, boasts a fort, till they heard of our approach two days ago, when they began to bolt : unly 150 were left in the place yesterday, ami they went off at night. As the cdcirftirs of our army, the Quartermaster Gen eral and his few troopers, entered the place, they spied two sowars making off aa fast os they could, which was of course faster than we could follow. All our Rohilcund enemy are Muisul uians, and, as they proclaimed a holy war against u.», they are naturally alarmed at our approach : but it is distressing to find the Hin doo villagers afraid of us. Perhaps they are conscience-stricken. They did not, however, ill-treat our fugitives from Shabjehanpore—but let them continue their flight, till they met with their murderersof t|ie 41st Native Infantry. Wo encamped for the day, of course, at Kaoth.— Hbur after hour camo in spies and letters, or as they must bo called in India, “chits,” from Shabjehanpore, all agreeing on the great fact that our energetic and resolute but fugacious opponent, the Moulvie, was there, and that two regiments and four guns had como in fiom T ’irrill7 w>-*rr Isy They were said to have 800 or 900 cavalry, and to have placed guns lo command all the’ rcadu. eo it looked like a ftvht. Great hopes were expressed of catching'’Moulvie, but that holy man has a wonderful acquaintance with the first law of nature. When, indeed, ono spy brought us intelligence that the sowars and Ma hometans of the place wore taking many oaths to each other on the Koran! to die—l nearly wrote “gamo”—or conquer, the old Indians near mo brightened up amazingly, and said it was a good sign they woro in mortal fear, and would run away if they could. The spies were mostly Hindoos—some of them led to inform by love of gain, -others from hatred to the Moslem—one because he bad a fight with his cousin, and hoped wc would aid him to oust his obnoxious relatives from certain property. The chits were written in the Persian character on small rolls of paper, adapted for concealment. It was cu rious to watch theso spies—their shifting, un steady glances—their keen quick lilting of tho eye at every sentence, to seo what effect it pro duced on the Sahib, while Hindoo and Mahom edan servants stood around listening unmovedly lo the intelligence,, which might be fatal to the cause of tho rebels, with whom wo say they all sympathise. Curious, too, was it to watch the calm, hand somo face of the Mussulaam Moonshee of the Quartor-Master General, as, standing orect, barefooted, in his looso whito dross and turban, he chanted rather than road the chits for his master, as if ho were a mere machine, who cared neither for Nazorine or True Believer. In ' no other Daiion or aggregate of nations, could such indifferenljsm apparent, but covering be neath it the most 5 furious bigotry, bo found for the sake of rupees. All the chuprasses or mes sengers of tho head-quarters camp are Brahmins or Mussulmans, but they are steadfast in their allegianco to Ihcir god “Rupee.” As the day woro on, tho Btorios brought in to us bccamo nearly unanimous. Tho sowars’ horßo were ready for a start, the guns were Umbered up for a flight, our numbers had been exaggerated; tho enemy beUoved tho country was full of our troops, and they said to each other that it would bo folly lo stand in an open city to resist such forces with such material and guns of prodigious sizo. Late at night—that is for camp life, about nine o’clock—a letter was brought in .announcing the flight of the Moalvie, and the evaouation of the city, but this news was accompanied by two etatemoats not qaite so agreeable—the first that tho Moalvie and his followers nad taken tho road to Mahtundeo, in Oude, instead of that to Bareilly; the second, that all tho Mussulmans and most of the Hindoos had abandoned their houses and hid themselves. The weather is now so hot that it is death, or great risk of it, to an European to stir outafter ten o'clock in tho morningttana, aa it is, our men suffer much from the pun In tfieir tents, wbenj the thennometcr'often stands 110 deg. There is rnoro fercr and small pox than ono likes to think about in the force, and ?ir Colin is racked by anxiety to get the men at onco under co vcr. Cash* SnAJunnAFroBC, April SO.—The informa tion received was indeed true. The enemy fled from Shabjehanpore without firing a shot. Tho column left their camp at 3 SO this morning, and arrived outride the town at 0 SO. It was found to be only partially inhabited.
