Wishing to have another and a moro perfect
tiuw of the horning mountain, on Saturday last,
at about two .f day.lstarted from Naples,
and after escaping from 211 tbe varied seeeature
of guides, torch-bearers, driver.', and n best of
other improvised artists, found myself, after
three- quarters of au hour's walk, in front of tbe
fire. Uarly os it was Ihero were many there be
fore mo gazing on the wondrous soeno. A vast :
bed of burning metallic-looking coke was sweep
ing down over carrying ore- ,
rything before it. The mass was, I should say,
800 feet in width—tho '-Journal’' says half a
mile—and how long t ho eye could not calculate;
for, looking upward, it was lost behind tho
hights. As to the rate at which it was travel
ing nothiog could bo more deceptive. Had it
been a narrow channol It would have been com
part hely easy lomakesomo decision, but its very
grandeur bafllcd me. Row after row of the vinos
however fell beforo it—great trees shivered and
shook and tossed about os if a heavy wind were
blowing, though it was a dead calm, andj soon
yielded to the destroyer—and, marching con
tinually over the black fragments uf scoria* on
the surface, ou it came without ceasing. Hiuce
midday it had advanced full 100 paces There
had been a house on a point uot f&r distant,
tenanted a few hours heforo, the fragments of
which I saw in the folds of tbe lava. The poor
creatures had taken refuge in a cave formed be
tween the upper and lower strata of on old lava
eruption. Behind the shoulder of a hillock
stood a handsome villa which had been saved by
its position ; the grounds belonging to it were
all, however, buried under the black masses, and
the (counts were standing on tho terrace looking
down upon the ruin ond calculating (he proba
bilities of the stream touching (hem. Tbongh
the whole of this enormous bed was in move
ment, still, running over it, or sometimes under
it, were two channels of liquid red hot lava,
which had never stopped since they issuedfrom
their sources. Tho blackened bed had become
to by an interval of suspension, and wasi'movcd
on before by the immense weight behind. On
looking up andarouud me my wonder wasjcthence
could have come this enormous quantityjof mat
ter. Could it speak what ahistory would it tell;
how it had been turning about to and frj> under
the surface of tho land for the last six :pouth.«.
upheaving and ruining great cities, destroying
cultivated lands, and carrying death 10 many
thousands. The speculation was net an idle
one, for in less than an hour later, said F*rof Pal
mier! to toe, “1 thluk the period of oartjqunkcß
has now "terminated for thepresent. L connect
tbiseruplion wihe them.” I passed toa number of
floe young vineyards, where tho clustered fruits
held out tho promise of an abundant vintage. One
after another they were BbriveUincjip and Naming
tike small Lurches, whiletheceuniry people were
saving what (hey could. 1 pass cAi to tbe nut point
of importance-, it is half way efp t'-.e mountain. 1
wind and windup, and m&kcibeeries of short, cuts
steep enough to lake all the breath opt of ft man's
body, and stand alt at once on a crag whidh com
mand a view of one of the most magnificent
. .iclcfl 1 ever witnessed. The whole stream
is visible from the source to the place which I
have just left; it is coursing down, or father
they are coursing down, for there is mors than
one stream, as rapid as a cascade; in fact,, they
are cascades of as pure liquid fire as can be
well conceived; sometimes they are hiddoji un
der the blackened scorhe, and then they emerge
again, and run on as if impatient of destruction.
It was one of those spectacles so astounding to
look upon that a nun seeks in some war re
lievo his feelings. He bursts if he is silent;
be must shout, sorcam, anything to let off hit
pent-up excitement, and 1 suppose that I did
so myself. It is now dusk ; the Italian night is
descending rapidly tij-ou the sun has just
gone down, and the stars are out in a minute,
and we have yet to climb to the top; so one
puli more. There Is a lazy blast Frenchman
with his C st loujourt le meme; “And why should
we go farther ? ” —but we pull him along mor
ally and physicnlly, and at last arrive at the
Hermitage. Behind it is another grand epec
taclo, perhaps grander even than what wo have
just described. There is less apparent activity,
but tho gorgo is wider, and tbo slow but certain
manner in which tho mass moves on gives us a
striking idea of power. It is 750 feet in width;
to calculate its bulk by millions of tuns would
bo only trifliug with a giant—we might better
calculate by tho million the enormous quanti
ties which are issuing every minute from the
many sources. In all there are 17 and upward,
says Prof. Palmer!, and this fact constitutes ono
of the striking features of this eruption, os
does also tho laetthat they do not run iu one
line but are opened in various parts. Another
new feature is tbo long-continued fluidity of the
lava, all showing tho overgorged rate of the
mountain and the immense power at work. It
wu tbe opinion of the Professor, however, that
the eruption was on tho decline, as no internal
rumblings wero now heard. Tho lava had
found its outlets, and was now pouring down
with tbe rapidity and tranquility of an unob
atructed stream. There havo boen eight earth
quakes since the eruption began, local only, per
haps ; and tho last, as marked ia tho seismo
graph of Palmcri, had taken place that morning,
at 7J o’clock. Nothing had been removed from
the Observatory, nor in fact was there any im
mediate danger, as there was a vast depth bo
bind which was not filled up as yet. Au incon
venience might havo arisen from a union of
the two streams, which wero flowing down, and
men were always oti tbo watch and to report.
On descending we met thousands of peoplo cn
ronto from Naples. Tho path for miles down
was marked by a line of torches ; tho gorgo
down which tbe lava was coursing looked from
a distance like a vast crater, the walls of which
wero irradiated by tbe Arcs below. The stream
had advanced so rapidly as to cut off our road,
so we wero 'compelled to make a long detour.
Arrived at the lava bed wo stopped to gazo on
tbo sceno of ruin .and of graodeur, bought
aomo ooina imbedded iu lava, and falling into
the descending lino of human beings soon found
oursolvcs in Resina. It is only a short hoar’s
drive to Naples, and grand was (he spectacle
which the mountain presented from a distance;
up to the very streets the reflection of tho two
great streams fell across the sea.
On Sunday, at mid-day, tho eruplioa seemed
to be on the decrease, and the spectacle was less
grand in the ovcnlng. Last evening, however,
there was much grealcractivity, and this morn
ing the iocreaaod length of tho line of smoko
secm9 to indicate much greater activity. No
life has as yet been lost; legs and arms havo
been broken, and a child who had strolled-out
to tho Ounyano side of the lava had fallen
asleep, and not until tbe stream was cloeo up to
It had some men perceived its dangerous situa
tion, and rescued it at considerable risk to
themselves.

Large Movement op Grain.— -The Buffalo
Commercial Advertiser of last Monday Las the
following:
Up to tbe close of last week the increase of
receipts at this port, over the s&mo time last
year, amounted to four and a quarter millions of
I bushels of grain. And wc have just opened the
< Beason. Immensequantitios are constantly com-
I ing forward. The receipts at upper lake ports
continue large, and it is now becoming highly
j probable that Buffalo will have done almost the
j usual business of an entire season of navigation,
before tho harvest of 1858 shall send new floods
of produce upon our crowded ware houses.
Railroad Track Displaced bv the Heat op
the Sun. —On Wednesday last, one of the track
men on the railroad between Rochester and Buf
falo, discovered that the rails ware bent In two
places, and an explanation showed that the heat
of the sun had so expanded the rail that it had
curved caob (it being the combination rail ) folly
six inches out ofline. All this expansion must
have taken place within two or three hoars, as
not more than that time had elasped since trains
had passed over the traok.
Waxt a Union. —Some of the Buchanan pa
pers are begtning .to beg the Douglas-Forney
men to como bock into tbe Democratic sheep
pea They do not relish Union on the other
side, bui seem to thiuk a little desirable on their
own. Tbe only difficulty is as to who shall
“cave in.” Old Back is pretty stiff, and the
Little Oiant a little eliffer. Somebody must
come dbwn.
The RrvrvAL Among tub Firemen. —Tbe
Philadelphia Press says:—“The work among
the firemen is still progressing with unabated
vigor. If we are correctly informed, there are
now prayer meetings hold—most of them daily
—in seventeen of the companies' houses. In
many cases, where there was not a single attend
ant upon church in an entire company, there
havo been, since this movement was commenced,
numerous conversions."
Botanical Curiosity. —Mr. Benj. 8. Walton*
of Watertown, has exhibited to tbe Waterbary
Amrte.an a full-blown rose, growing upon the
stem of a yellow sweeting apple tree in his gar*
den. The roso has eight or nino ties of leaves,
and is in every respect as natural as if grown
upon a roso bush.
Tlbatb or a Man a.vd nis Wife from Mania
a Pott. —A man named Driesbach has been
keeping a coffco house on the corner of Market
and Floyd streets for somo time. He and his
wife were much addicted to liquor. Tbe man
wag first attacked with mania a potu and then the
wife, and both died night beforo last. —Louisville

Wc have not noticed any wool coming into

al nene in regard to sales. There is some little
