To our surprise we have to record one of the 170110, strokes of fortune that could have come upon us. Thursday night the levee one mile abuse this place (on the bank of the Pass) broke, and when discovered at daylight the break was about twenty feet wide; but before the citizens could assemble it was thirty yards wide. Strenuous efforts to stop it were made; bat to no purpose. The work was continued Until the breach had gained sixty yards in width, when it was aban doned. The channel to widening and deepening everyhour. The water has a fall of eight or ten feet, and is rushing down It with torriffio rapid ity, with such power and force as to fell trees in its coarse, throwing waves and foam and spray high iota the air with n roaring akin to that of an approaching tempest The damage to the country is almost incalcu- table. It is estimated by Judge Shelby and Mr. 0. Bobo (old residents) at $1,000,000. Judge Shelby estimates his loss at $96,000. Mr. Bobo estimates his loss at $lO,OOO. F. E. Shelby es timates his loss at $3,000. It will injure a ma jority of our planters, by destroying crops, etock, eta. If the river remains full It will flood the country along the lower pass. We are informed that one hand by an hour's work could have thrown dirt enough upon this levee to have pre vented it from ,breaking. If Into there has been gross neglect and carelessness on the part of somebody. After the above was put in type, wo learned from Mr. Porter, sub-levee commissioner, that be was at the levee at & o'clock on Thursday evening, and that It wouldiutve required from eight to twelve inches rise p put the river over the levee at that point. His thinks that tint boatmen had a hand in the matter. We think there is room for suspicion, and will assist in sinking any flatboat that attempts to go through this opening. WOOD Ola[table tor PITTS&V , ROZI, PA. Tun New Orleans &aunt of June 10th, has the following speculations in regard to the Cot ten crop "It was believed yesterday that the clotting of tho Hesperia crevasse had been abandoned. This settles the fate of thousands OD thousands of the beat cultivated lands in the parishes of &Indiana and Tenses. There was raised in Ten ses, in 1866, 66,200 bales cotton; in Madison, 48,423 bales; in Carroll, which covers the Point Look Out Crevasse, 26,916 bales. These three parishes furnished 166,618 bales. How much Of the , cultivated lands of these parishes are submerged, we are not Informed. These are in Our own Slate bordering on the river. ' Then there is Concordia, which cent to market 62,068 bake. Although this pariah is comparatively free at this moment, it is impoirdble to any, from the accounts daily received how long it will continue. In addition to these parishes, wo will go higher Up on the hilssissipr aide of the river. From that section we hav a:counts Of great damage In Bolivia, Issaluena and Washington counties, in which arc Ennio of the most productive cotton lands in the country.- Then, In addition to these gloomy details, the Tallahatchie river is full and read y i disgorge over its banks , and meeting the -w ater from the blessistdppl, the inundation will be vast in the extreme; infect, itwlll settle the cotton (petition for this year." ADM 1111:1:1Thrliaz, t•Entamurr" TEADS.—...4 Massa cre on board an "Apprentice" S p.—The London Times gives a long account of an occurrence on beard a French ship engaged in the new "'op. prentice" system. We quote: Tho Ethlope, Capt. Croft, a steamer belong ing to the West Africa Steam Company, arrived at Monrovia: the capitol of the settlement of Liberia, on the 14th of ApriL The captain, on landing, was informed by ox-President Roberts that a French vessel—the Regina Greif—which had been for some weeks colleeting "emigrants" under the new system, had been the soon of a fearful catastrophe. These so called emigrants had revolted daring the absence of the captain, purser, and a few of the crew, who, fortunately for themselves, had gone on shore for a short time. The seamen left, on board, to the number of eleven, were murdered by the negroes; the doctor alone was spared and put on shore. The ignorant wretches, after porpertrating this deed I. had taken possession of the vessel, and were• known to be in the neighborhood of Cape Mount. The Ethlope immediately went in search of her, with ex-President Roberts on board; found her, and towed her into Morovia. Mr. Roberts went on board the Regina, and when the blacks heard they were to be taken to Monrovia they danced and shouted with delight. Mr. Roberts, having heard the accosat ,of these people, ex pressed hie opinion that all the so-called emi grants were merely slaves, and had been regu larly bought, shipped, anti manacled, just in the regular way, as practised on the coast for many a year. The account the negroes gave of themselves leaves, indeed, no doubt of the fact. The irene with which they had been manacled were on board, and many of them retained the marks on their wrists and alleles. They were about 270 in all, but 100 bad left before the Ethiopefell in with the ship. One of the men said that the greater part bad been brought down from the interior and bought by tlks Frenchmen in the usual way. Others bad gone onboard as labor ers, he himself among the number, end bad been, suddenly inbred, put away in irons, and etowed away in the hold. By these means were the emigrants obtained, who, but for the mutiny, were destined to "develop their faculties by con tact with civilization" in the island of Reunion, • late Bourbon. The account given by them of the massacre itself was that it arose from the cook atabbing one of the people who had gone to the galley to get something to eat; hut there can be little doubt that the deed was premeditat ed, and that the cook's violence, even if true, was only the siginal for lg. That the system is nothing more than t slave trade under another name cannot be n :lited. X -- " -- • A WOAR-WITIPPINCI P .—There is ranch t excitement in Delaware . ty, Pa., in conse quence of the beating of omen named Joan na Connor, by a Roman Catholio priest. IVe think it was for marrying a man earned Coppoek, or Proctor, a Protestant— which constitnted a heinous offence, even in this country where every one should have their free choice. She said that he whipped her so severe ly, that she was confined 1... her bed three weeks —almost at the point of deaih! The affair was hushed up, and in all probabilty would not have been divulged but for this last offence. It is stated further that it is nothing uncommon for him to whip men, women end children whenever they displease him." Tin telegraph has advised us of the breaking of the Yazoo Pass. Mr. Depew has just returned from a trip to the Lower Mississippi country. In 'Louisiana he saw large fields of the Chinese cane in culti vation, for the manufacture of sugar and mo lasses. For five weeks the water has remained upon it to the death of from six to twelve inches, during which time the wheat has matured, and in the Opinion of good farmers, who have examined it, the grain is equal to any raised on the hills. Os Taus own Hoox.—The Democrats of Wilson county, oppgaed to the Lecompton swin dle, bare called a drafting to appoint delegates to the People's State Convention; which is to assemble at Harrisburg on the 4th of July next. Lecompton Democrat, and who took an active part in allowing up the Willet's Point speculation had an enthusiastic reception at Morrisanis, near New York, on his return home. Eloquent speeches were made on the'occasion by himself and Oeo. B. Butler. There is little doubt that. Mr. Raskin will be thoroughly sustained by his constituents, and re-elected by a large majority. The Albany Eming Journal says theta Dem ocratic paper in the interior of the State thinks they could carry the next Election, easy enough, "if the Kansas Question was only out of tho way." Perhaps they could. A man might row from Lewistown clear up to Buffalo, if Niagara Falls was only out of the way.
