Tux Founts' Fes TITAL. —On the Sabbati im
mediately succeeding the German Festind in
this city, the Be,. Charles Walther, of the Raith
field street Protestant Church, alluded b that
occasion in a few remarks, which an eneemed
German friend kindly translated for us, but.
which have laid upon our table several days
waiting for space in our columns. The remarks,
however, have lost nothing by being "kip."
Here they are:
"The cause of truth has had to do belie at
all times and in all countries, but wiere. the
weapons aro noble-mindedness, courage and
perseverance, victory will eventually mown its
efforts. These considerations call our gtentlon
to the historic importance of the week int past
—an importance acknowledged by tin Amer
ican as well as by the German element of our
city. For If the Germans fdrm a breath of the
American people it should boa noble and ntv
lag branch, engrafted on and rejuvenating tin
trunk and improving the fruit.
I may therefore well be permitted to advet
hero, in the sanctuary of our church, to tie
,moral and religious significance of the Singes'
Festival, which passed so beautifully, nay one
so gloriously. I may advert to it here, I say
for though our church is decidedly opposet
to a certain intellectual school, she novertheles
evinced ever the liveliest interest, co-operation
and participation wherever the advancement (
truth, liberty and progress were concerned.
Whatever then is beautiful and sublime in lit
is nearly related to true religion ; antLesposialk
does this apply to song and music, since rt
Ilgion touches the chords of the sublime ad
divine in the human heart. Song with bees'
paniment is an Important and indispensable pat
of the protestant form of worship. Upon th
wings of song, prayer, sermon and sacramet
rise to God-pleating devotion. Only by Coup
gal.ional singing is our public worship made is,
not in which all participate. And who has a=
dered, nursed and developed it! The rtfon
ere, and especially Luther. He was the eat
who, after centuries of neglect, paid altentia
to this. lie wrote our impressive and tendr
hymns; he composed our simple, yet lofty ad
soul-touching tunes. Recall to your minds, re ,
hearers, the incomparable hymn "Ent vase
Bursa," which rises in the history of the refc
mation like a triumphal column. How tonchig
is the story of Luther, the poor chorister, sicc
ing before the doors of Eisenach, and winnig
by.his innocent childish deportment and by is
melodious tender songs, the protection and s
sistanco of a noble pious German woman! le
established choirs of boys, those semineriesof
church music. You, coy older German frig*,
recollect with a melancholy pleasure the chefs
tort that sang before your doors.
When the reorganization of the schoolsbe
came necessary in Germany, the choirs connet
ed with them were also dissolved; and in heir
places are now the great common school sytem
and these singer societies. As long as throb
singing in maintained, our worship will nowink
to an empty ceremony; for the sermon rises
from the hymn, as the expression of the lying
word from the awakened feelings.

And I may certainly further say that sling
er's festival, an it was held in our midst,is the
clear expreesion of genuine German nationlity.
A masterpiece of German art, the Gateau,
"On the Sea Shore," was performed will pre
cision, power and grace. At tho days o the
"feast," nil brethren and sisters,
"From the Danube, Weser, hbine,
The Elbe, Odor adu the Main,"
were as of one heart and of one thought.
Their peaceful enjoyment, their "Gtaniath
lichkrit" were an evidence of pure Germs feel
ing, which delighted our American broth's. I
may mention the excellence of the Germs Peo
ple's life—their truthfulness, industry, reigaous
feelings and harmonious enjoyments. .et us
maintain these. In doing so, we shall surely
form no opposition to our American felbw-eiti-
Yens, but we shall rather offer the land of
friendship, for co-operation, to the weal of a
great and free fatherland. We may letrn from
them circumspection, cautiousness and forbear
ance, and they will learn from ne wariall of feel
ing and Cannot:dons and joyful soda, amass
ment., and a religiousness which is :pally re
moved from cold infidelity as [roan hypocritical
sanctimoniousness. And if the euesas of our
festival is considered, we will acutely get the ac
knowledgment, from our ativerries,,that the
Germans are not unworthy the raver o' heaven,

four days of sunshine for the eclebratien of their

The parliculars of the course aro briefly as
follows:
straw....s "
Commencing with greensward, manure roe y
and plant to corn and potatoes. The second
year sow the ground to barley. The third year
giro five acres to wheat, with &dressing of de
composed barn manure, sowing early and doing
all the work in the best manner. Give another
five acres to rye, which is a better crop either for
human food or fattening pork or beef than many
farmers may suppose. lie one who has given it
a fair trial will neglect sowing a few acres.
These crops are among the best on which to
"seed down," and we shall always take advan
tage of the fact. The land for the beans may
be fitted and planted after other spring crops
are finished, and the crops will ripen in time to
admit of auccessfal fall seeding to mix grass, or
clover alone. Bean straw is of high value far
foddering sheep—nearly or quite equal to the
common run of hay. in all cases of sowing
grass seed we would follow it with a dressing of
plaster, if none bad been supplied within six
months previous.
The hot year's sowing may be varied, giving
more or lees room to either crop, as circumstan
ces suggest. We would not sow much wheat,
unless we could also apply manure, and sow
early upon a warm, well-drained soil, en as to
give it the earliast possible maturity. We would
givemare room to beans, were it not that more
labor is required for seeding down, and the first
crop or grass Is usually of less value. If we
kept sheep, we would certainly give a few acres
to this crop. As for rye, we think it good policy
to keep a supply of this grain always on hand.
It Is objectionable to grew more than pee va
riety of product in a single field; but many
farms are so divided that this would not be ne
cessary. It would not be a bad rotation to seed
down on the barley, and, where one has a largo
stock of cattle, it would be advisable to do so in
some cases. As to the price of barley, it is a
profitable crop to grow for feeding out upon the
farm—and perhaps it cannot bo put to better
use than thus to consume thecrop. Oats might
follow corn or barley—they often pay • good
profit—and would do still better wore they not

A CAILD ruou Mn. Cuaatze Inexans.—Three
and twenty years have passed einee I entered
upon my present relations with the public. They
began when I was so young, that I find them to
have existed for nearly a quarter of a century.
Through all that time I have tried to be ma
faithful to tho public as they have been to me.
It was my duty never to trifle with them, or to
deceive them, or to presume upon their favor,
or to do any thing with it but bard work and
justify It. I have always endeavored to dis
charge that duty.
My conspicuous position has often made me
the subject of fabulous stories, and unaccounta
ble statements- Occaisionally such things have
chafed me, or even wounded me, but I have al
ways accepted them as the shadows inseparable
from thelight of my notoriety and success. I
have never obtruded any, such personal uneasl
nem of mine upon the generous aggregate of
my audience.
For the first time in my life; and I believe
for the last, I now deviate from the prinoiple I
have so long observed, by presenting myself in
my own journal hi my own private character,
and entreating all my brethren as they deem
thatthey have reason to think Well of me,
and
to knolohat I am a man. who has ever been
usilfeatedly true to our comannoolllos) to lend
their aid to the dasseminetion of my present
words.
Soma domestic trouble of mine, of long stan
ding on which I will mate no further remark
than that it claimato be respected as being of
a sacredly private nature, has lately been brought
to en arangement which involves no anger or
ill-will of any kind, and the whole origin, pro
gress, an . / surrounding circumstances of which
have been, throughout, within the knowledge
of my children. It is amicably compo4ed, and
its details hard - but now to be forgotten by
those concerned in it.
By some means, arising out of wickedness, or
out of folly, or out of inconceivable wild chance,
or out of all thee, this trouble has been made
the occasion of mlsrepresentstions most grossly
false, most monstrous and most aruel—involving
not only me, but innocent persons of whom I
have no knowledge, if indeed they hove any
existence—and so widely spread, that I doubt
it one reader in a thousand will pereue these
lines by whom some touch of the breath of
these slanders will not have-passed like an un
wholesome air.
Those who knew me and my'nature, need no
assurance under my hand that such calumnies
are as irreconcilable with me as they are, in
their frantic incoherence, with ono another.
But there is o great multitude who know me
through my writings, and who do not know me
otherwise, and I cannot bear that ono of them
should bo left in doubt, or hazard of doubt,
through my poorly shrinking from taking the
usual means to which I now resort of circulating
the truth.
1 mot-solemnly deolan, then—and this I do
both in my own name and my wife's—that all
the lately whispered 'timers touching the trou
ble at which I have glanced are abominably
false, and that whoever repeats one of them
after this denial, will lie as willfully and as
foully as it is possible for any false witness to
lie before Heaven and earth

The Plunder of Lueknew
Correspondence of the London Timm
In some instances our men have exhibited
signs and tokens that the license of sieges and
storms has produced its usual effect upon discip
line. There has been a suspicious upsetting of
two treasure tumbrils under a European guard,
in the which some few rupees were missing, and
paymasters exhibit a preference for natives in
the discharge of the delicate duty of convoy,
which can only arise from a perverse habit of
arguing from a particular to a universal. In
addition to those influences must bo estimated
the effect of unexpected riches unequally dis
tributed among men. There are some compan
ies in different „regiments which can boast of
privates with thousands of pounds worth in
their ranks. One man I heard of who com
placently offered to lend an officer "whatsom
ever he wanted, if ho wished to buy over the
captain." Others have remitted large sums to
their friends; some have "realized," after great
strength of mind and body in holding out against
ready rupees and carrying their treasures about
them; others are hoarding up bite of glass
which they fondly believe to be valuable gems,
and are looking forward to the time when they
can sell them for "twice as as much es Jem
Brown got for his." Ero this letter reaches
England, many a diamond, emerald and delicate
pearl will have told its tale, in a very quiet,
pleasant way, of the storm and the sack of the
Kamerbaugh. It is just as well that the fair
wearers—though jewelry, after all, has a dead
ening effect on the sensitiveness of the feminine
codscienco—saw not how the glittering baubles
were won, or the scenes in which the treasure
was trove. Indeed it is only truth to tell that
most of these interesting memorials of the siege
of Lucknow were bought—bargains very often
—by officers on the spot from soldiers hot from
plunder. And some of those officers have made,
litteratly, their fortunes. There are fine brace
lets clasping brawny wrists, the proceeds of
which are already devoted to buggies, and dogs,
and horses, to Greenwich, and to the Rag, or
to the Junior, or to the I. U. S. C. in delightful
anticipations. There are certain small caskets
In battered uniform cases, which contain estates

Strultus & Co., settle that little transaction at
the Corner, pay off the Injured Smith, and leave
a good balance with the agent besides in young
Quercusa favor, and Culls returns home, if all
accounts be true, with quite sufficient to meet
the extravagoot propositions of old Mrs. Partlet
for settlement ten times over. Pleasant times,

Se curious to observe how riehesdevelop disease;
how one's liver is affected by loot, end what
tremendous ravages in oim's family, among tha
nearest and dearest, can be canoed by a few
crystals of carbon. The private carrying his
musket, and panting along the arid plain, la
tormented with visions of a cool interior after
the Dutch school—lots of pipes, and pots, and
taps—himself iu the midst —he the proprietor
of that glorious "public" in his native village I
—he can belt he can but get home. The weight
of file Left round his waist full of rupees and
gold mohnrs assures him the vision can be real
ized, and it is no wonder jibe resents the "Fall
in there ! fall in !" He has taken castles enough,
and our good friend of the 38th feels jest as the
legionary soldiers in the lays of Horace, or as
the fierce Sikh beside him, who is road to be off
to his village, and scarcely can be kept quiet
with many promises. Two battas, two shares
of prize money, the plunder of two :cities, and
many "picking's by the way," have made some
of our men too rich for easy soldiering. Even
the 23d, when they were relieved from Luck
now, managed to carry out a considerable quan
tity of valuables. But just in proportion to
the ~ l uck" of some regiments are the misfor
tunes and consequent dissatisfaction of others.
"We did all the fighting, while you got all the
loot.', I would not be the foe who have to meet
the men with thatremsrk in their mouths. Jost
think of the Connaught Rangers—the 88th—
not only without plunder from Delhi or Luck
now, but actually looted themrelves by the ()wa
iler Contingent, and far away from the
pleasant ransacking of the Kaiserbaugh.—
However, they and the other regiments engaged
in the minor and colateral operations against
Lucknow expect to receive their bath, although.
not actually present at the siege.
Every day adds to the prize property, and it'
is estimated that the sales will produce £600,-
000. At one time a discovery of cash is made,
at another, plate, silver and gold are found in
some ingenious hiding-place, which excites some
uneasy forebodings that the army won't ',get its
due ;" then a casket of jewels is revealed, or
come soldier is obliged to give up his 'se
cret store ; tho Sikhs—ingenious to such a de
gree, and versed so far in looting that it is said
one of them can appraise the value of articles
in a house by walking past the hall door, and
that they can "smell" gold silver, and precious
stones—have lately taken to explore the bot
tom of the Ooomtee, and their labors have been
rewarded by the recovery of great quantities of
rich arms, swords, pistols, match-locks rifles,
muskets, and articles of various kinds, and some
diving and groping excursions in the tanks have
been more or less successful. Tho town of
Cavriapore is said to be full of the plunder of
Lucknow, and if the damage done to publlo
buildings, the destruction of private property,
the deterioration in value of houses and land,
and the results of depopulation could buastima
tea, it would be found that the capital of Oude
has unstained a loss of five or six millions ster
ling—a lees which it never can by any possibili
ty recover.
There is a daily ealo of the plunder thus
