Tao Eon MAIM—One of the commercial phenomena developed by the railroad system, in the-facility Which it affords for rapid trans portation, is the,Egg Trade between the west and the east. A few years ego the eastern eit lee had to depend almost entirely for their sup ply of eggs upon the country adjacent to them; but now they are drawing theii supplies from Ohio, and even farther west, and such has been the fullness of the receitpathat eggs are almost as cheep in New York as in Cincinnati, and so plentiful ea to become an accessible and wel come euldition to the meagre rations of the poor. We have been at some pairrirto hunt through oar daily reports of receipts of predose by rail road arta - river from January let to June tat, end we find that the receipts of eggs in this city, mainly for the cost, from tho POIIITC., were 15,791 bbls. ; and Mr. Forsythe, iha Agent of Adams' Express, Las kindly fornished us o table showing that the receipts,in the Fame time, by that company, were 'l,OOO bbls.—a total of 10,- 761 bbls., or say 20,000 bbls in round numbers. Estimating each barrel to contain 711 dozen, which Is the average, the. total would be 1,4-10,- 000 dozen; and if any body chooses to magnify the figures by reducing the dozens to units he will find the total to be 17,280,001 eggs. We Prefer, however, to stick to the number of pack ages in which they were contained, and are con tent with the 20,000 total they present. The bulk of these , hipments was from Ohio, whose matrons appear to give extra attention to the hennery erudite be anxious to make all that inpoz, lible out of their feathered Locks. It would be worthwhile to enquire into the sum total of this Ohio egg trade, for we fanny that not more than altithe of it has come this way. The shipments by other routes were enormous: and our guess that it will foot up 200,000 bbls. will not be found, we thick, an exaggerated one. The curious in figures. and those who, (like the ; tract publishers, who reduce tae nooks they pub- fish to pages, in order to make the showing large) are fond of large totals, cnn multiply this by 72 cod that by 12 and so ascertain to a nicety the number of eggs swallowed by our eastern friends. The rapid devolopement of thin trade is at. tribuled, end with much propriety. to the rail road system of transportation: but f - e have a theory of our town on this subject, to wit, that if it had not been for the hard times the trade would not have been half so le.gr as it iv. The paper makers say that when times are good and money plenty, rags grow 84are0, and that when times grow hard the supply increases. Why': Becinse in flush times money is on plenty that housewives lose somewhat of their prudent thrift and the. rags are not saved hat arc rather thrown out of tway as trios not worth look ing after; but it en the pinching time comes all such neglected sources of revenue are remem bered, the rag heap is overhauled and the paper mills find an improved supply of the raw ma terial. It is the same with regard to the matter we have more especially in band. -The hens and the cows are the peculiar resources et the farm er's wife. On theta she depends for her pin money. When, however, ;;Feculation to rife, money abundept LiAldifurtunes made to a day, the farmer's wife gets her heal no high as her bus bard's, and the cows and the bean are neglected equally with the rag heap, not it is only when such a reverse as that .4 last year, which reach ed into every farm-booms of the la:. 1 , overtakes as, that the true value of the, apparently hum ble resources is realizol. We are not extrava gant when we say that the farmer's wives of Ohio have this year realized a innon of dollars from the sale of eggs alone, and that is nu mean item in helping a depressed peopts out of a drug. Thin is nut one of the current subjects of ed itorial disquisition; but it suggests e, runny re- Sections which our farmin readers may profit by that we feel bound to commend it to their special attention. TELE LATE Du. Trv. u AND THE SLAVsall" Ltens roccs.—The apologists for the institution of Slavery, whether in the pulpit or in the halls of Congress, seize upon every occasion to attempt to strengthen their cause by giving it a moral and teligiouti chatacter. They do not sc!uple to resort to falsehood when their purpose in that manner can be served. Last Sabbath Dr. Cummins, in a terinou which he delivered on the death of the late Dr. Trmi, in the city of Washington, took occasion to allude to the course of the deceased on the Slavery question, at the time the rupture occurred in his church in Philadelphia. The reverend gentleman de clared that Dr. Trsia subsequeritl; regarded this occurrence with regret, pronouncing it the "great error nf his life—one which DO never repeated and always afterwards repented."
