It is no follows: The Presbytery of Franklin w ould respectfully memorialize the Lieneral tssembly to give such an expression of "that system of lows, which the "Lord Jesus Christ bath appointed in Lis church," and to make such a declaration in re ference tot he application of that system of laws, that voluntary slavehoiding shall be a disquali fication for member-ship in the church—a bar to communion in all the churches in our connex ion The Committee on Bills xnd mvertures report ed thereon, referring the Presbytery to the pre vious action of the Assembly on the subject, and to the doctrines of the Church in the Confession of Faith, which are presumed to be sufficiently explicit. Report adopted. The same Committee presented a report for erecting thq new Synod of Minnesota, to consist of the Presbyteries of Minnesota, Blue Earth and Dacotch. Adopted. The Special Committee on Arrangements for the next General Assembly submitted a report, which was adopted.' It designates the Central Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, Del., asAtic one for the sessions of the Assembly. The lowa Divorce Case was taken up. All the members having had an opportunity to gice their reasons for their vote, the roll was called for the final vote. The Moderator announced that members could vote to sustain the complaint of Bev. Thompson Bird against the Synod of lowa, or not to sustain it. The roll was called and there were hid members for sustaining and 5d against sustaining The Moderator voted against sustaining. . . This is virtually a majority of 5.1 against the Rev. J. 11. Shields, and finds him and his wife guilty of adultery. According to l'resbyterian theories they arc not man and wife—though ac cording to the laws of the State where they re side, they are exactly that thing, and Mrs. Shields' right of dower in her husband's pro pi,rty remains 'atom. Ins deed is not good without her signature. The vote was divided as follows: Ayes, Ministers Ot, - Elders Noes, Ministers Elders la. The sentence, of the Assembly is not yet pronounced, and it is ex tremely doubtful whether the original penalty-- deposition from the ministry and excommunica tion from the church—will be sustained when that branch of the subject comes up. I'ENSMYLVANIA ANL THE FREE TRADE FUND In the voluminous testimony befe..e the Tariff Investigating Committee occurs lie following passage. not specially refrred to in the report: N. Reynolds admitted that ho received $1,(00 from Mc Stone, the greatest part of which he expended in Pennsylvania in October, strengthening tho hands of the Fillmore nraogi, f-outers. lie said t lint Mr. Stone sought his acquaintance after seeing that he had offered and had pasi, lin the Twelfth Council of the Amer ican party resolutions calling upon Congress to admit wool duty free, and availed himself of his experience in urging the matter upon Congress: having $1,&00 of the funds placed in his hands, he expended it "in the political campaign, trav elling and taking care of wool, and a little for the American party at the same time:" he did not know where any of the rest of the money went to or what was done with it.,, So it appears that part of this fund to para lyze still further the industry of this country was employed in Pennsylvania in "strengthening the hands of the Filloriere straight-outers, in 5."6, as one of the means of assisting in removing the du'y on wool. Well, wool was not pulled over the eyes of the Pennsylvanians for nothing . The Fillmore straight-outers were strengthened just enough to give the State to Buchanan, at the same time that the tariff was reduced. Phil, Bullehn. A meeting was held there on Thursday evening at St. James Hall, a building said to hold three thousand peo ple, which was crowded to its utmost capacity, while hondreds remained outside unable to ob tain admission. On motion of lion. Albert Sawin formerly Whig District Attorney Joseph Striagham, hoq , a Democratic Republican, was called to the chair, who pointed out the necessity of a combined opposition to the present sectional Administration and to the party which supports it, and said that the present movement was designed to initiate such a combination. On motion of Mr. Dorsheimer, late Democratic postmaster at Buffalo, vice-presidents from each ward in the city and town in the county were nominated, representing Whigs, Americans, Democrats and Republicans. The secretaries also represented the various parties to the coall. A Committee on resolutions having been ap pointed, the lion. Solomon G. Haven addressed the meeting and was cordially and enthusiasti cally reoeived. The other speakers were lion. Benjamin Welch, Jr., A. M. Clapp, Hon. James O. Putnam, and Mr. Dorsheimer. A series of resolutions was also presented and unanimously adopted. itusstati G ALLANTRY. —A celebrated canta triee, now "starring" it in Paris, lately recieved from a Muscovite prince a handsome brooch in diamonds, in acknowledgment of admiration; but not wishing to accept a gift, the motive of which might be misconstrued, she returned it with warm thanks. The fellow who wrote that ought to be kicked. We consider the weather of the last few weeks abominable and tho man who would make an apology for it as bad .as the weather . —Near/. Mercury. Ir is stated that Idr. Buchanan, unlike all former Presidents, has invited only his political friends to dine at the White House. If this is true, he is no gentleman' and any gentleman should deem it a degradation to dine with hint.—Lou. Journal. A Ilo.u.ssce tt arta tarx.—The Bucyrus Jour nal says that a man living near there, lost hie wife some years ago, in Ilomer,N. Y. that they had a little girl which he gave to a friend and I left the country. lie was gone for ten years and returned but could find no thee of his child.— She had two marks by which he might know her, one toe was gone and she had a scar on her arm. The man gave her up aslost to him, and finally settled near Bucyrus and married. The rest we give from that paper: "About two weeks ago, he happened to pass by the room in his house occupied by a servant girl who had resided with him for nearly two years, at a time when she was about to retire, and the door being open, he saw her foot. lie merely glanced at it, and happened to notice that the little toe of the right foot was missing. die thought nothing of it at the time, but after retiring, the idea struck him that it might I.c the daughter he had searched for so long. At first he dismissed the thought as improbable, but it still forced it-elf upon him, until finally he re truested his wife togs to the room and ascertain whether there were or not, marks of a scald upon ter right arm. She went, and to his 'immense delight reported that - the mark was there. The poor man was so positive of her identity, that the girl was awakened, and in tho middle of the sight was questioned as to her origin. She could only toll them that she did not know her parents, that her earliest recollections were that she had lived somewhere in the east with a familly named (naming the familly she had been left NS lilt by the woman originally en trusted with her,) and at their death oho was taken charge of by the overseers of the poor, a place provided for her and she bad come to Bu cyrus with a family and had supported herself by doing housework since. This tallied so near ly with the ascertained facts in the case that the next day the father started east with her, and visiting the different points named, ascer tained to his great joy, that she was in truth his daughter. She is an extremely beautiful girl, of great natural intelligenvc, v.,..1.!..tugh totally uneducated, is still interesting. She is now at Ohio, receiving an education to fit her for the new station she has assumed in life." IMPODTANT TO SCIENTI £l.' SPEY.—In the course of his summing up, in the case of Betts vs. Clifford, tried before Lord Campbell and a special jury, at Warwick Assizes, on the 22d in stant, his lordship noticed that a scientific wit ness having asked his opinion as to whether he was hound to attend, upon being served with a supboena, ha would say that a scientific wit ness was not bound to attend, and ought not to ho subpoenaed. If ho knew any q 4 uestion of fact he might be compelled to attend; but her Majesty's subjects were not compellaLle to give their attendance to speak upon matters of opinion.—The Solicitor's Journal. The paragraph which we copy above possesses an interest for all physicians or learned men who may be called to give testimony as experts in courts of justice. According to the princi ples hero laid down by Lord Campbell, which corresponds with that which we know has here tofore been considered as correct by good au thorities, although not always regarded in the courts, the mere payment of the :witness fee does not entitle the lawyer to get out of a wit ness upon the stand a professional opinion upon a point involved in the case. If the witness knows any thing about the facts in the case of course lie must attend and testify to what he knows: but if he is ouly summoned to give his opinions, ho may do as ho pleases about putting himself at the mercy of the council.—Bation Daily A dr.criaer. The steamer having got over them, forthwith started for Pe kegarua, come two hundred mars further up. It was M. The North Star seems to intend investigating the question prac tically.
