ABOUT SEWING MACHINES.
At some expen*:, we are able to present to cur
readers a series of illustrations which will illustrate
the principle of the machine stitch, even better than
an examination of the machine itself. Our readers can
hero see at a glance the peculiarity of each particular
stitch, and can judge for themselves in reference to
the best stitch and the boat machine. We have felt'
interested in this much talked of “Sewing Machine”
question since its commencement, believing that this
machine was to bo the great agent in ameliorating the
condition of that large and poorly paid class of persons
wlios - misfortunes and woes are so truthfully set forth
in Hood's “Song of the Shirt.''
The following article is copied from the American
Agriculturist; the machines are in operation at No. 68
Fifth street, and Alex. Tv. Reed., Esq., is the agent.

How Seizing ia Hone by Machinery.
We are happy to be able to present oar readers
with some illustrations which, with the accompanying
descriptions, will answer live question: “Hotc can u
Machine make Stitches?” We are aware that it is not
n little difficult to describe the inside work. A "
ing Machine, without having the Machine itself and
the reader directly before us, but we will do the best
we can with the aid of some engravings for which we
think xjzr friends will give ns a little civ.lit, when we
tell them that the drawings below are priacipuliy ot

We commence with the stitch made by the Whee.er
ic Wilson Machine, Uo that oppears to be the simplest
and most ensi’y i!!u.drut«.u. Fig. 1 exhibits two pieces
of noth, c, plaeed together and partly sewed. A little
examination will show that the upper thread, *•, r, <•. is
crossed in the center by the lower thread, t—in
ether words, the two threads cross each other and are
thus looted together. This woe essentially the ■'lock
stitoh invented, aDd patented ih'lB4G, by Mr. Howe,
whom we are indebted for the first practical appli
cation of machinery to common sewing; and ere glad
that, unlike most inventors, he is reaping a rich reward,
for though he makes no machines himself, yet the prin
cipal manufacturers of the successful Sewing Machines
all pav him a license* fee on each machine sold. S<’
those 'ladies who buy them will have lb* ..ati«f«ction
of knowing that some of tb r purchase money at leal
g'vs to the inventor himsell.)

Ky continuing this process a series of stitches will

In the
Machine in
vented by Mr. Howe, the upper needle was moved bv
machinery, and the lower thread was carried through
the loop by means of a shuttle having within it a 'Ob
bin (or spool) of thread. This arrangement is stm
ustd in heavy Machines for leather and other fa
brics, and in some of the “ Fomily Machines. The
Wheeler A M lison Machine is an improvement npon
the shottlc, in several respects. U makes precisely the
same stitch, but with less complicated machinery and
less wa=te of power. We will try to explain its work-
to the readers of the American Jlirricvitunat
