"or men were in hich delight with the gay
of the eunuchs which tbev found in
some of the rooms, and it was with difficulty
they were induced to lake otT the crowns of lace
and peacock's plumes, and bird-of-paradisc
feathers, and the sword bells they stuck over
i heir heads and shoulders. Here, as in every
other building, there were quantities of kites,
the Hying of which seems a f&vorilo amusement
of these childish but ferocious races. Goats,
horses, the stately Cyrus cranes, tamo monkeys,
apet>, autelopes, numbers of paroquets in cages
were also appropriated by the men.
In the next court, which was sheltered from
tire by the walls around it, our mcc had mado a
great seizure of rich plunder. They then burst
mto some of the state apartments, and were en
gaged in dividing the spoils of shawls and lace
and embroidery of gold and silver and pearls.
In a nook off this court, where there was a little
shade, we retired to rest ourselves, as there were
no means of approaching the front, part of the
building being on fire, and explosions of mines
feared every moment. Two men of the ffOlh
were in before us, and assisted later by some of
the we saw them appropriate money’s
worth to ruako them independent for life. The
rooms off this nook had been us»-d as stores by
the King or some wealthy member of his house

to emerge with a rioher trophy. In ooe box
they found diamond bracelets, emeralds, rubies,
pearls and opals ; all were so large, and bright
and badly set tha; wo believed at the timo they
were glass. In nnolher was a pair of gold
tnnuntcd and jeweled duelling pistols, of English
make, and the bill, slating that bis Majesty tho
King of Oude owed the maker £2BO. Then out
they came with bundles of swords, gold moun

pieces for the sako of the mountings, leaving the
blades behind them. Next came oat a huge
chemical laboratory , then a gold saddle-cloth,
studded with pearls: then gold-handled riding

BESfur. OF NATIVE LADIES—TIIK ZENANA.
Meantime, intelligence reached tho Chief ol
tho Staff that tho women of the Zenana were
secreted in one of the strongest parts of the
KtuAerbngb. Somo engineer officers immediately
proceeded to tho spot, into which some of our
soldiers had already forced an entrance. In do
ing so the son of ono of tho Begums, a deaf and
dumb youth of twenty years of age, and two or
tbreo of tho ladies of tho Zenana were unfortu
nately killed by a discharge of musketry when
the doors wero burst in, beforo tho soldiers saw
that they wero women. It may be imagined
what a state of terror the Begums and their at
tendants were in when our men entered. They
expected death every instant, and their agonies of
fear wero increased by the knowledge of the fact
that some armed Sepoys were slmt up in a room
close at hand, nud ono shot might seal their fate.
Huddled together amid tho smoke they could
hardly be calmed by the agsurauces of the offi
cers, who at once took measures to remove them
to a place of safety. As they were going out
one of tho ladies pointed out to Capt. Hope
Johnston a box which ho had just taken from
the floor and laid upon the tablo. Bbo told him
it contained jewels to tho value of ten lacs of
ropccs. or £lOO,OOO. 110 at ooco placed sentries
at tho doors, nod gave orders that no one should
enter. Having, with tho aid of his brother offi
cers, taken tho ladies out of danger, ho retired
to the Zonana. U'Waa blazing from end to end.
Tho sentries only escaped by clambering up to
the roof, from which they wero with difficulty
saved. The jewels were gone. Had CapLJobn
htone taken them they would have been his, for
tho Kaistrbagh on this day was given up to
plunder, and what each man could get became
his property.
Those stately buildings, which had noTer be
foro been entered by any European foot except
by a Commissioner of Oudo on a state day, were
now open to the common soldier and to the poor
est camp-follower of our army. How their
splendors vanished like snow in sunshine! The
destruction around one, the shouting, the smash
ing noißcs the yells of the Sikhs, and natives,
were oppressive. The noise, the dust, the shout
ing, the excitement were almost beyond endu
rance. Lucknow was borne away plecmeal to

Our march went past and through a line of
palaces; the Lalbaugh, the Farm Bax, Chultur
Munsil, IUI we came out upon a large spaoewith

some tottering walls, rising amid heaps of rub
bish, and surrounded by a trench. This gate

dow Lawrence m t his death. Here was ground
made holy by patient courage and by the noblest
endurance and dtvotion all around us. Westood
among tho ruins of the Residency and of the
works defended by the garrison of Lucknow. —
The 23d entered irst, and were followed by tho
29th; the Bengal Fusileera were in support, and
os wa passed throu the Chutter Mnnsil we found
tho 20th in resen e in case they were needed.
Col. Wells of lh j 23d received his orders from
Sir James Outrarb, and Mr. Cavanaugh, whose
name is so famous in connection with the Luck*
now eeige, volunteered to show the advanced
party the way to the iron bridge, and rode at
their head as they advaoced at the double. One
party went to tholeft, thoother to the right down
by the road. Tho moment our men appeared
over the ruins of the Residency, the enemy open
ed fire on them, and their bullets came “ping
ing” overhead. Two of the 7‘uh and several
dbooly-bearera were hit close at hand as they
were drawn up in the rear of the 23d. The
gallant Fusileors, in extended order, with loud
cheers, dashed along the road and over the bro
ken ground in front. On Lhe road was a small
intrenchmcnt, with on embrasure for a9-pound
er. As our men got within two hundred yards,
this gun, deliberately laid, was fired, “Whish !”
weot the grape, with a murmer like a flight of
birds. Two, an\llwo only, of our men fell, and
in a moment moro the gun is ours and is turned
on tho enemy. More cheering ! The iron bridge
is ours! Our guoß from the north are turned
against the stone bridge, across which the enemy
aro flyiny in thousands—horse, foot, guns and
baggage, men, wbmen and children. _ Outranks
guns open from tle front of tho Residency on
the large Imauml arrab, and in a few minutes
we hear that the i tone bridge is to beassaulted
also. Our guns c n the iron bridge are pound
ing away nt the fugitives who are running up
and down on'thp stone bridge, for they hear
Grant is outside olt Lhe north, and' they do not
know what to .do. \ We enter a broad street with
magnificent arched gateways. Turn sharp to
the left through one of them, and there stands
tho great Imaumbarrab, the finest building 1
have as yet seen in India, with the grandest and
simplest front—a noble mosque, ample squares
and flights of steps, broad esblanades, and gar
dens once rich with fountains. The 7'Un are
soon installed In the great saloon, said to be odc
of the largest arched roof* in East or West. I
paced it, and could only make out that it wasf.s
yards by 21. There was a stone covered with
silver, and a silver mosquo and many a can
delabra inside, but 1 was glad to get out of the
dust and heat, and climb by a winding stair to
tho gallery outside tho high and slender minaret
of the mosque, from which there was a beauti
ful view of iho city.
Capt. M’Neil, of the Bengal Artillery, attached
to the Ghoorkas, and Lieut. Bogle, of tho same
force, succeeded in saving Mrs. Orr and Miss
Jackson, who havo been so long in captivity. As
these officers were exploring the deserted streets
in front of the Ghoorka advanced' posts they en
countered a' native, who said he was one of Sir
J. Oulram's rmployett, and implored their pro
tection for hi« house and property. In the
course of his appeal he mentioned incidentally
that he knew where the English ladies were con
fined, and offered to point out the place. Almost
immediately afterward another native appeared
and presented two notes; one from Mrs. Orr the
other from Miss Jackson, imploring immediate
succor, as their enemies were making search for
them. Tho officers returned to the nearest
Ghoorka a post, and called for volunteers ;40
or 50 of these hardy, dirty, and loot loving Cal
mucks stepped forth, and with the native at
their head as a guide, the party at a rapid rate
started off on their errand of deliverance. They
proceeded for more than half a mile, through the
silent, tortuous, Btrects, expecting to receive a
volley at every turn, when they came to a house,
apparently shut and abandoned. “This is tho
house”, said tho guide. At the noise of their
footsteps the owner Meer Wajcd Ali, Daroga of
the Court —made bis appearance, and began to
stipulate for his property, but Capt. M'Neil de
manded the immediate production of the ladies,
and finding that he was resolute, the Daroga led
him to an obscure appartmem, whero were two
laidcs in Oriental costume in a dark corner.
At the sound of the voice—“ Are you the
English ladies and do yon wish to leave this
place those whom he addressed were not able
to reply to the officer from excessive joy, and
for a moment or two they were overwhelmed
with thankfulness and emotion. But there was
□o time to be lost. Tho Moulvie and bis fol-
lowers wero knowu to be searching for them.
The ladies, clad aa they were, descended to tho
street, and were about to be placed on the officers
horses, when n palanquin caught the eye of
Capt. M'Neil in the court of the house. Just
as tho ladies were getting into it, a few budmashes
with drawn swords, sallied out from an adjoining
louse to attack them, but a shot from a revolver
sad the bayonets of the Choork&s soon disposed
of their resistance, and six of the Daroga’s re
tainers being impressed as palanquin bearers,
ibe party and a portion of the escort moved back
as rapidly as possible to thedhoorka post, and
the poor ladies were placed in safety. At the
samo time, some other Christians, Earasians and
descendants of Europeans, were saved by the
guard of Lieut. Bogie, and were delivered out
of the hands of their enemies. It is but just
to say, however, that, although the native Chris
tian community was so large as to form a gunj
or quarter of its own, containing, perhaps, s(>o
persons, there is no reason to believe that the
Sepoys persecuted or murdered them. Most of
them, fearing ill-treatment, concealed them
selves.
