From the point of approach it has the appearance of an enormous cone or pyramid. Us height, by the measurement of an officer con nected with the Btate Geological Surrey, being 081 feet, and the area of the base about UGO acrefl. From its general summit projects still upwards a massive pinnacle of iron ore, the view from which will well reward the labor of the traveler who clambers to its highest point. Sweeping back from tho distant range of hills which firstarrestfl thosight to the southward, the eye rests charmed on the beautiful valley which »o well deserves its name of “Arcadia,” dotted over by farm bouses and varied in its surface by wood and field and pleasant streams. In the distance the largo while buildings of the “Ar cadia Malo and Female Seminary'' ore promi nent objects. About two miles off is the village of Arcadia. A mile nearer may be seen Ironton, the newly established counly seat of just springing into existence, with its dozen or two of houses in the various stages of progress, from skeleton to newly painted shell. In an other direction the view commands a valley less cultivated, as yet, but rich in undeveloped pro ductiveness and natural beauty as that of Arca dia. At the .point dividing the two, looms up tho Shepherd mountain, from the summit of which is procured the magnetic ore so valuable for the manufacture of steel. In Shepherd val ley, at its foot, is laid out the embryo Knob City. Turning backward yon look upon a dozen mountains and their intervening valleys, and in the distance tho gorgo or “shut in, ' through which winds the St. Francis River. All of the grand panorama I would willingly place beforo the eye of your readers, but waive tho further attempt in favor of some of tho corps of letter writers w ho aro expected to be eloquent on these subjects when the occasion of the great Iron Mountain Road openlog, on the 18th prox., will inspire Lbeir more practised pens. The following extract from a Report of Dr. Little, the State Cbeinist, may give your readers a correct idea of the Koob Itself: “The Pilot Knob, with an almost perpendic : ular peak, and a nearly isolated position, has, from the earliest settlement of the served as a landmark to the pioneer and the traveler. It is an almost isolated, and nearly conical hill, connected ntits eastern base with a range of lower hills (the first of which is called the Little Pilot Knob) that gradually rise in height as they pass otf to the oast. The rocks near the base of the Pilot Knob aro seldom seen in place, but when so, aro ot a dark gray color, prerent quite a biliciousand ehaly or slaty char aettr. aod offer strong indicati«aa-jif etratifica-. Hon. They are not, however, homOdlal, but dip at an angle of twenty-five or thirty degrees to tho south-west After ascending about 300 feet the rock assumes tn u re of a ferruginous charac ter, and at tff e height of 440 feet, wo-find, on the north side of the mountain, an exposure of a heavy bed, or rather stratum, of pure iron ore about ~ feet ia length and nineteen to twenty feel in heighth, or thickness, apparently passing parallel with the lower slaty rocks', and withtho same dip. through the mountain to tho south west. Tho ore differs much in appearanco from that of the Iron Mountain It has a more slaty character aod a finer grain , and, in somespeci meos, assumes a most micaceous appearance The specimens jsry in richness An analysis of one gave • Silica oti Alumina 1 til Proxideoflron.. .81; 2!»«q«al uo.uTpr. cl. of iron. “The quantity of pure iron ore at tho Pilot Knob, is not, probably, less than all that por tion of the Mountain above the elevation of 440 feet above its base; for, beneath this point, there are large masses above the base of the hill. “A section of the Tilot Koob, 440 feot above, and parallel with its base, would cover an area of not less than ’>3 acres. Considering the up per 141 feet as composed entirely of iron ore, and as a cone with a base of 53 acres, it would make H>Vo7,o(>o cubic feet of iron ore; which volume, if water, would weigh 0,700,045,'.i00 pounds J.t27:lrd_ .JAIUD K. CRUS “The specific gmyiiy of tho different speci mens of (he Pilot Knob ore was found to bo 4.75, •1.49 and 4.f.G, Iho mean of which is 1 73- and lakmg this last ns the average specific weight or the ore, it would giro for the lotal weight of the ore. upon tho above supposition, in the up per 141 feet of the Pilot Knob ;i,2‘iS4 pounds,.or 13,972,77 i tons.” At tho foot of the mountain, ami about 400 feet below the stratum of ore uow being quar ne-l, stand the blast furnaces, two in number with their necessary buildings, separated by a small stream and a lawn from tho neat house* of the employees of tho place. The coal and ore yard is on a level with the top of the furnaces and is conuoctod with the ore quarry by an in clined railroad, which is worked after the man ner of the coal roads on the Monongabela, the loaded drawing up tho empty cars. Nothing could be more conveniently arranged, for tbc cars discharge the oro from a tipple ’directly upon the roasting kilns, whence it is carried a few feet, dropped into the tunnel head, and soon appears in the form of a molten stream in tho canting house below. It may be interesling to otir Pennsylvania iron men to contrast the cost of some ot tho items of manufacturing with tho same in our own .State. Mr. Jerome llaily, the gentlemanly manager, gave me from his book'the whole amount of labor ex ponded In quarryiug and delivering oro at tho kilas during the week ending this evening, as follows. C 3 days' work, costing $59 50, which, divided by the number of tons delivered, gives a cost of tvc7iti/nrvm cents per toh afore. This labor include* foreman, miners, blacksmith nod at* tcmlaul on the railroad. Holding five cents per ton for powder, tools, Sc., aud it trill bo seen that the cost of oro delivered on the level of tho tunnel head and within a hundred feet of Us month, is cents per ton. To this maybe added on a liberal estimate of tho expense of roasting, stamping and dropping into the fur* naco, say 25c. per ton. Two tons of ore produce a ton of Iron. The last run of furnaoe No. 2, at the Knob, which is 4d feet high and 10 feet bosh—about the ordinary size of Pennsylvania charcoal fur naces—was as follows: She commenced blowing March 6, 1*57, and “Mowed out” 29th September—-the run being but 7 months, less 0 days, during wbioh limo the product was 0200 tons of metal, or an average of about 104 tons per day. This is an astonish ing yield, and has probably never been equaled by any charcoal furnace, of the samo sire, in tho world, except in the case of the Iron Mountain furnace, alluded (o in my last, which exceeded it in daily product and continued the run for a longer time. Facts like these, would at first blush, seem to indicate that capital and the easy access now had by railroad lo theso enormous deposits of ore, will soon enable the companies owning them to supply all America with iron, and put un eud to our. Pennsylvania competition. Such a con clusion would bo orroncous, for thero is an in dispensable clemont lacking for such a measure of success. It is fuel. The surrounding coun try id not well timbered, and unless tho railroad is oxiended to the heavily wooded region further to Ihfe southward, it is not at all likely that any larger quantify of iron will be manufactured on the spot than the present works are capable of prodaolng. The ore will bo quarried and car ried to the fuel. Whether tho coal fields of Mis souri or Illiools will bavo any valuo for the smelting of iron, is yet to be tested—to my own mind tbe doubt amounts almost to a belief the cool will not answer for that purpose, and U is not Improbable that in a few years hence more of thi Missouri ore will bo 'smelted with stone QOtl dn the bents of the Allegheny or Monon- TERMS 1 " 1 mouth. F***' Evehv Max Has His Price.—lt is no wonder many people believe the caption of this article to bo troe when each developments aro brought to light as have jost been divulged by an investiga ting committee io Wisconsin. This committee examined into the history of the passage of the land grant bills of IboG, through the Wisconsin Legislature. The report, which makes a volume of 400 pages, shows that thirteen members of the Senate had assigned to them in bonds and stocks of the La Crosse and Milwaukee Railroad $175,000. The members of the Assembly who voted for the bill each had from $5OOO to $20,- #00; only throe members who voted for the bill did not receive bonds or slocks. Only four Sena tors who votod for the bill received none. Of the State officers who received bonds, A. D. Smith, is set down $lO,OOO. Governor Bash ford had $50,000 in bonds. The Madison Journal says tho rascality, impudence, and fraud which has marked the course of tbo managers of the company is astounding.— Cleve. Her. A oottac3POHHE»T of the Chicago Journal , da ting from Madison, says: There seems from the report to have been a complete conspiracy on the part of the Governor and several of the State officers for a general system of swindling and plunder—taking from Uie treasury, not in small or moderate sums, but by the hundred thousand. AnJ yet, strange as it may seem, these same men who have so long fed upon tbepublio treas nry, are but little or no better off financially to day than they were at the beginning, the proverb holding true that the wicked can only flourish for a season, and some of them, at least, have by this time no doubt become convinced that the way of the transgressor is hard. Gov. Barstow, who was supposed to have taken enough from the treasury to make him one of the weaUhiest men in the Slate, is to-day re ported to bo a bankrupt. Gov. Bashford, who received fifty thousand doHara In one transaction for his executive friendship for (he La Crosse road, to say nothin* about what he obtained direct from the State Treasury, is probably now worth littteor nothing. The smaller fry have been equally unsuccessful In thieving. It illustrates clearly the old idea that success from stealing results from the qual ifications likewise of hiding. These men seem to have been good at stealing, but failed in hiding. The Bible is Scnoou,—Judge Whiling has addressed a letter lo the Governor ofNew York reoomending that the punishment of O'Connell’ convicted of murder, should be commuted. In the Idler ho says : ‘ The convict Is a youth, as near aa 1 could judge, shout sixteen; bis life a forfeit of the law ; u victim of bad habits and a want of early moral training— if ever an inmate of one common schools, one from which the Bible, the f-e.-t ichool , book ever placed in the hands chil dren, was probably ruthlessly ehcttd.
