THURSDAY MORNING, APRIL
Deibbtino TifH Cause. —The H<linioistratioo,
\ritb its bribes in ihe shape of offices, contracts,
&0., has proved too much for the integrity of ft
largo portion of democratic opponents of
Locompton. Ono t>y one they desert Iho ranks
of their former friends—otto by one they swallow
horning denunciations which they havo on for
mer occasions Marled against the swindle, and
thus stultify and disgrace themselves before the
whole country. Reilly, who spoko earnestly
againßt . Lecoroplon-rDKWAnT, who could see
nothing but villainy in it—and Owen Jones,
who ranked himself Among the invulnerable and
the pure—have all gone over to the side of
James Buchanan' 'the “nine anti-Lecomptcfn
democrats” From State, whoso position has
been, ever sinco the agitation of the question, bo
much talked about land glorified over, have

meet with a just reward from their betrayed and
deceived constituents. Their hour of triumph
is only for the brief present—the people will in
good time assert their supremacy, and in a fil
ling manner express their honest indignation.
The Washington correspondent of the Trihunt,
writing on this expresses views which
iio strictly coincido wit hi our own in this respect,
that we feel constrained I* adopt them without
further remark :
'•While it is meluncMly to rontcmplnte llio
desertion of men who pledged their, personal
and political fidelity, in the most solemn man
ner, to this cause, thcro is still one source of
consolrtion amid the painful emotions which
such flagrant treachery excites. With a few ex
ceptions, most of t lies© defaulters have justified
a share of suspicion throughout, from the ab •
sence of that directness and courage which the
occasion demanded. Tbeir tampering weakness
or worse wns well understood, but-allowed to
pass anrebuked from dictates of policy It was
the intention of tho Republicans, notwithstand
ing these known infirmities, in support every
man who should stand io good faith lo the lost.
They are now not only released from any such
obligation, but are bound to denounce ilie trai
tors. And it is comforting to know, too, that
they will faro no better at the hands of those
to whom they have returned with the brand of
a doublo deception upon tbeir brows. The
reoent defection audits damaging oonsequeuces
to the Democracy, will never be forgiven, though
the prodigal sons may bo apparently welcomed
with tho fatted calf. And for Knglish especially
t hero is in store a punishment in bis own District,
which will at least (each an instructive lesson
to such thimbio-rigging jugglers hereafter.
Mr. Owen Jones was among the very first to dc
nounoe the scheme of the conference as worse
than the Lecompton fraud, and yet lie is now
ono of the most roaring converts, afler the fash

too small to accommodate bo many guests.—
Every evening of tbe week will bo devoted to
similar entertainments. Tbe well-known hos

The Uses or Border Ruffianism —lt seems
by the following extract from tho speech re
cently delivered in Congress, by Mr Thayer,
that Border Ruffianism has its uses. <>n this
subject that eloquent friend of freedom very
truthfully says:
“Ifwo thank. UoJ for pxliiols, we should abo
thank him for tyrants , for what great achieve
raents have patriots over made, without the
stimulus of tyranny ? Without vice, virtue it self
must be insipid : nud without wicked and mean
men, tbero could- be no heroes.
“Tho bravo roan rejoices in tho opposition of
the enemy of his rights. Wicked and mean men
are tho stepping-stones on which the good and
great ascend to heaven and immortal fame.
“These miscreants, cursed both by God aod
man, subserve important interests. Tho sacred
volume which unfolds to us the life and suffer
ings of the Saviour of meo, makes record also
of Pontius Pilate nnd .of Judas Iscariot as ne
cessary agencies in the groat redemption
“So I will denounce no inno who hue fought
against Freedom (0 Kansas, as entirely useless
in the grand resalt. But what a learn to draw
the chariot of Freedom ! Atchcson and .String
fellow and John Calhoun, with the two succes
sors of Millard Fillmore to lifl-althe wheels.”
So the future historian may discover that
liven the iofamoos administration of Buchanan
may serve tho purpose of rousing the people to
a watchfulness of their rights and privileges,
and of- causing them to distrust forever weak
and ambitious aspirants for the high places of
the nation. “Sweet aro tho uses of adversity’
if thoy are'properly applied.
Another Loan. —Tho National lutellujmecr

that the President has determined lo ask Con
gress to authorize a new loan to tho amount of
thirty millions of dollars, and to fund the
twenty millions of treasury notes recently is
sued. This looks bad, indeed ' Tho recent
draft on the treasury for iho l.ccompton ini

The most dl«»strcra» break wMch hiaaa jet
ooearred is list upon tho plantation of John
SI. 8011, on tho opposito oido of the noer from
Jefferson City. Tho heavy rain softening the
levee, and the wind shifting round to tho north
ward’ cut oat a gap of about twenty feet, about
ten o'clock in the morning, yesterday, through
which the Mississippi poured, with a fall of
about fifteen feet, a terrific volume of water,
which, at the lime wo visited the spot in the
evening, had inundated the country as for as
the eye could reach, andw&sslill rushing through
with increased violence, at a depth of about five
feet. Many and various modes had been adopted
to arrest the current, but had all proved una
vailing up to the time we left — From the X. 0.
Delta, lofA April.
The opening has increased to a fearful extent,
and now measures not less than two hundred
feet in width, and the water pouring in at a fear
ful rate. The levee, for somo distance on each
side, is wet and weak, and giviog way, piece by
piece. The inside levee, which was visiblo yes
terday, is now entirely covered, and the waters
are healing against tho large sugar house as if
they would sweep it from its foundation ovary
minute. The track of tho Opelousas Railroad,
back of the sugar house, is nearly three feet
under water.— Delta 14fA.
The crovasse at Bell's plantation, on theoppo
site side of the river, is becoming a very fash
ionahlo place of resort. Every evening hun
dreds of ladies and gentleman cross over from
our city and spend some time looking at this
miniature Niagara. Yesterday evening, partic
ularly, we noticed while thcro a large number of
ladicß, who seemed to hei enjoying the sport
hugely. It is certainly a glorious sight, and
it would he a pleasant one, did not the thought
of the immense damago it .was doing crowd in
and destroy the fcoling. Tho gap is gradually
widening, and will, no doubt, increase in width
for some timo yet, though it would seem hardly
possiblo to throw a much greater volume of
water through this channol, unless a genuine
river should be formed. Tho skiffs which are
inside seem to he doing a very brisk business
transporting, at one dimo per head, tboso per
sons who are desirous of making explorations
into the premises of the landlord, John M. Bell.’
The sugar house, with Us huge chimney in the
distance, and lashed at its base bv the surging
waters, looks liko an Eddysione lighthouse in
land. Tho fall of tho water over tho inside
leveo furnishes a series oT as natural rapids as
can be found in any Northern landscape, and
more beautiful too, for in the centre stands a
noble specimen—the prido of the South—the
monarch of tho wood—a live oak tree, the droop
ing branches of which nearly hiss tho boiling
,water beneath.— Delta IOfA.
Since our report of yesterday, the opening of
the levee has increased some fifteen or twenty
feet in wdith and a tremendous current is rushing
through, boiling, seething, and foaming with
the violence of its course. The clayey and
tenacious quality of the soil does good battle
with the assailing fioodsandalono delays a swift
destruction of along extent of the levee. The
water has increased a foot in depth on the plan
tation near the crevasse sinco day before yes
terday, and is spreading over the couotry It
is freely passing Harvey's canal, has invaded
Gretna, and is working down towards Algiers,
Tuesday thero was no water in Gretna, but yes
terday it was coming on Lafayette avonuo
alarmingly, many of the houses on that street
being surrounded.
Thero were yesterday from one to three feet
of water about tho houses between tho Bell’s
plantation and the brick yard lower down the.
river, and tho residents bad vacated most of
them.—The plantation clearing is now a wido
lake, being everywhere submerged, the fine
homestead standing forlorn and desolate in the
waste of waters which are dashing their menac
ing waves against its walls.— Delta, of the IH/A.
Thousands of persons visited tho crevasse yes
terd&y, and many of the ladies had to wait a
long lime before they coold gel near enough to
obtain a good view. The levee, from the ferry
lauding lo the crovasse, was literally alive with
people. Preparations were on foot for the erec
tion of a pile-driver, to commence (lie work of
closing it, yesterday It will, of course, lake
somo time to arrange matters. Tho work of clos
ing will be one of tbe most interesting features,
and tho spot will, no doubt, be crowded from
day to day. A boat, starting from the foot of
canal street would, no doubt, do a fine business
in Carrying passengers toithe crevasse — Delta

We do not caro a button about the Hon. gen
