Tub National Fottsdbt.—Wheeling really
appears to be in earnest in trying to g.*t the
talked of National Fomndry in that town. At
the city meeting-on Batarday night much speech
was expended aud = a. long series of "Whereases
and Resolutions was passed. Tbeso claim for
that place dn abundant supply of Iron and coal
near at band, facilities for transportation, etc.,
etc., for Wheeling above any other place in too
Union. It is strange that thesegreat supplies

which ho pronounced on iho occasion of his
reading of the bill iu place, is now beforo us,

“I beseecli you, then, for the sake of the ris
ing generation, for iho future glory and welfare
of our country, to; pause long before you vote
i gainst a bill which would elevate xmr children
to that scalo of perfection, to that educational
standard of superiority, that Iho world would
vie with them on account of their surpassing
knowledge nnd intelligence. Tho next genera
tion that comes after us ought to bo nnd will be,
if wc nro true to ourselves nnd our posterity, a
superior moo of beings to defend our country
and her institutions from the insidious wiles and
Qi'tchinations of hereditary monarchy.
State Fair.—<Vc hare received from A. O.
Hicrter, Esq, Secretary uf tho State Agricul
tural Society, a circular, in whioh the substance
of tho proceedings of the late Btsaion of the
board at Harrisburg are set forth. David Tag- ;
gar: nnd A. E. Kapp, of Northumberland, nnd
A. 0. Ileister, of Harrisburg, nro appointed a
Committee to receive “proposals and m&bo tho
necessary jirrangemcnta for tho next annual
Exhibition,” nnd Toesday, Wednesday, Thurs
day and Friday, the 26th, 29th and 30th of Sep
tember, nnd the Ist of October, were fixedjw
the days of exhibition.
Thero was a resolution ns a
Premium, a tharough’-bred Durham Dull, not less
iknu eighteen months old, to tho County Agricul
tural Society that shall furnish the largest mem
bership to «ho State Society, iu proportion to
the taxable inhabitants in such county, previous
to the 15th of Seplomber nest—a Lite Member
ship to cost $lO, and on Annual Membership $l.
Riot and Supposed Killuto.— Yesterday a j
man unmed .Frederic Na«r, of Port Perry, ap- j
peared before the Mayor and made oath that
about eight or cine days ago, John Konig, Nich-'
ulna Anderson, and several others whose names ‘
Naser does not know, enrao to his house in the
town of Port Perry, nnd kicked in the doors and
broke the furniture in the house, committing a
violent assault and battery upon the person of a
man named August ■, who died yesterday
morning, os tho deponent believes froin ibo
effector the beating received as above. Naser
asked that warrants bo issued for the arrest of
these persons.
Coroner Alexander went up to Pori Perry yes
terday, to hold an inqscst upen the body. Tho
Mayor issued the warrants and last evening dis
patched officers to arrest tho parties named. At
12 o’clock, when our paper went to press, wo
had not heard whether they were sucoesaful or
not

Monday, from Johnstown, reports that hitherto |

children came near suffering a very serious nc
cident from a horse becoming frightened and
running away with tho wagon in which the per

animal efefl stopped at the Market, and all those
in the carriage rescued without hurt or barm.

Market street, yesterday, but was only slightly
injured A young lady in Allegheny, while
attending an auction sale in a store on Federal
street had a vnluobio shawl cut and ruined by,
sumo ’scoundrel. Tho deed was not discovered
until some time after it happened.

dation of the Convention recently held at Xenia,
Ohio, tho Allegheny Presbytery of tho Associate
Reformed Presbyterian Church, at Us lost ses
sion, appointed Thursday, ncxL the 15th inst.,
to ho observed as a day of facing, humiliation
end prayer, by tho respective congregations
under its jurisdiction. Humiliation for past sin
and neglect, ami pnjet for forgiv.nctu, and o
spirit of awakening to new obedience, will form
