The anti-Lecompton ving had prepared a lot of
resolutions, strongly opposing the measure, and
npon counting noses it was discovered that they I
had men men enough to pass them. Conse-1
quently, the patriotic emotions that filled the ■
breast of the speaker had to be bottled up, and
the cork tied dovn until a more propitious time
and the Lecompton meeting is counted among
tho things that “did’nl come off.”

Curability of Consumption.
Lzni&sM. B.—When describing the nature of PaU
tnon&ry Consumption weremarkcd that in ono method
by which Consumption is sometimes cured, the
tnbcrcles become softened and are discharged into
the larger sir tubes, and thence thrown off by expec
toration; after which the alccrs heal op. These
ulcers in healing leave scars just as external ulcers
do-which scars are inditputabh proof of the «,ra
blhty of Contumption. Dr. Carswell, of London
exammsd the longs of 72 persons, who. had died of
other diseases, and in 12, found scars showing where
ulcere had formerly existed—or, in other words,
proTmg most conclusively that these twelve patients l
had at some previous time boon cured of advanced
consumption. Bodet,of Paris, in 149 examinations
toand 28 similar eases, and the great Lacnnec in for
more extensive investigations, found about the same
proportion of cases in which these scars existed.
Many eminent pbyrieiaDe of oar own country haTe
mado similar observations, and fully acknowledge
the curability of consumption; but in spite of ail
this testimony, the groat mass of American prac
titioners perwn in pronouncing it utterly incurable.
It is a custom with many physicians when a pa
tient recovers from a serious discaso of tho
»y that the disease could not havo been comumn
uon or the pabent would not have recovered ; but if
he dies, they consider it proof that the case was ono
of consumption. This is equivalent to saying that
they nave to treat lung disease without knowing
what they are reaHy prescribing for, as they cannot
detect its nature until it terminates either in death
or recovery.
It is true that it is rery difficult to detect consump
tion in its earliest stages, exoept by an'experience
in auscultation far greater than physicians in general
practice can hare; bat long before tho diseuo can
justly be pronounced beyond cure, it becomes eo
easy of detection that erery physician should beabio
to ascertain its natnro—and to treat it understand-
Ingly.
Wo would add here that wo do not wish to bo un
derstood aa asserting that all cases of eonenmption
at* eatable. This would be simply absurd. We
merely mean to say, that, although consumption is
a.dangerous disease, it is still curable when jndi
ciously treated, and taken as ereryperioos disease
ahould bo, m reasonable time. If twenty-four hours'
delay may sometimes proto fatal in simple pneu
moma, pleurisy or billions forer, surely the foolhardy
delay of weeks or months may bo sufficient to render
fatal a disoase always so dangerous as consumption

No-More Madeira.—A Funchal correspondent

mil erer be produced. All recent attempts to man
ufacture the wine bare failed, and pumpkin-vine*

consolation; if we cannot get Madeira wine, we can
