Stxcbextu.x.e, March 80, 1858.
Bear Gazette:— Hating been invited by oar
friend, Rev. A. M. Reed, to spend a few days at
the olose of the session, I came down on Toes*
day evening and arrived just in time to witness
the Cantata of the “Flower Queen.” .
Tho large school hall of the Seminary was
crowdod to a jam—people sitting add standing
in all sorts of uncomfortable positions. The
quick eye of the Professor discovering me, I
was very kindly accommodated with tho edgo of
a desk.
The young ladies in the Cantata were becom
ingly dressed, (each wearing the flower which
she represented) and .performed their parts in
remarkably good taste. Tho coronation of the
Queen struck mo as being particularly fine.
The next day.was oocupiod in tho examina
tion of tho different classes by their respective
teachers; the reading of compositions, music—
vocal and instrumental, Ac. The school hall
was, if possible, still more crowded thin on the
evening before. The members of the graduating
class (twenty in number) were all dressed in the
same style and material, and presented a very
neat appearance. Their examination indicated
the coqtso to have been thorough.
Rev. Dr. and Mrs. Beatty are still connected
with the Institution, and give It the advantages
of a long experience. Few individuals In the
country have beon more liberal in their contri
butions to benevolent Christian objects than this
estimable lady and gentleman. Their charities
have always been of that quiet unobtrusive char
acter which rat her avoids than courts praise.—
It is difficult to appraise too highly the influ
ences of this Seminary. The successful man
agement of a Seminary requires qualities of
j head and heart, which few possess. That Prof.
; Reed’s natural kindliness of disposition, schol
arly attainments, extensiro travel, patient
investigation of the systems of education both
at home and abroad have eminently flUed him
for his position, his influence and popularity
with the pupils abundantly testify. W. R.
A-FTrn the passage or rejection of Lecomplon*
other agitations are instore for tho country.—
The President will spring such Issues upon the
public as the purchase of Cuba, or its violent
seizure upon the principles of the Ostend Mani
festo, and the annexation of Mexico, involving
the payment of her foreign and domestic debt,
amounting to $200,000,000. Tho annexation
of Mexico to the United States, or its subjuga
tion by means of a protectorate, will probably
be favored by Great Britain and France. Sub
jects of those countries are proprietors of the
foreign debt of Mexico, about $100,000,000,
nod arc largely interested in thatrepresented by
home creditors. Tho principle of assumingthe
debts of governments which are absorbed is now
fully established. Thirteen years ago we an
nexed Texas, with an express stipulation that
the United States should incur no liability on
account of her debt, and that ah? should keep
her lands wherewith to pay them.' r*Notwith
slanding this compact, the United States have
paid nearly the entiro pnblie debt of
Texas, and much more than would have been
paid had that State remained an independent
Republic. Nor con the principle be controvert
ed. Foreign creditors of weak nations cannot
be deprived of their remldlcs against them if
they cbooaa to merge their sovereignties with
stronger powers, any more than an individual
can repudiate his private liability for personal
obligations by forming a partnership with other
men. We know, then, the exact pecuniary cost
of annexing Mexico and Cabo. It is Two Hun
dred Millions for each, Four Hundred Millions
for both. Ido not say whether the bargain
would bo a good or a bad one ; bat of one thing
there cannot be a reasonable doubt, which is,
that it will, if consummated, lay the foundations
of a national debt as enduring as the national
existence. The bargain will carry another con
sequence—tho assumption by the Federal gov
crnmerfl of the repndiated debts of the States.—
If government can be made liable for. the
debts of Cubs and Mexico, by tsking;them into
tho Union, how much more firmly irshe bound
in honor to redeem the pUghted faith of those
States already in the Union? Ho man doubts that
tho Federal government should withdraw the
shield of its power from the defaulting States of
Arkansas, Mississippi and Florida, that great
Britain would collect the amount of the bonds
of which their subjects have been swindlodby
tho governments of those States at the mouth of
the cannon and the point of the bayonet. As
then they are protected in their dishoner ofily by
tbo power of this government, it follows that
sooner or later that protection most be with
drawn or the money mast bo paid. The first
branch of the alternative is an impossibility ;
the Federal Treasury will make good the
second.

Tbs Revival is Esqlasd. —The revival of
interest in religions matters first bogan on the
other side of the Atlantic and has been increas
ing, though more slowly and quietly than here,
ever since so many of the flowers of England's
yotith perished in the Crimea. From London a
correspondent of the Presbyterian writes by the
last steamer, as follows:
“You will observe that the religions services
are continued, both at Westminster Abbey and
at Exeter Hall, and are still attended by crowds.
What good they are doing of coarse remains se
cret. But that they form a part of a great and
glorious work, which la now fairly on foot in
this great Metropolis, there is no doubt. Since
lost year the services on week days, as well as
■ Lord’s days, in school rooms, and lecture balls,
and upper halls throughout the dork places of
London, have been rapidly on the increase, and
multitudes for whose souls bo man formerly
cared, have been regular brought under Gospel
influences, through meant of the city mission
aries and their superintendents.”
•Tho Westminster Review has just dared to
attack the Christian system upon two points
of the most hallowed nature, the actual death
and'tho subsequent resurrection Jesus, .and
assuming to overthrow both, builda upon pie
ruins an argument for tho speedy decay- and
fall of Christianity ns an accepted flrith among
men, The daring infidel is answered at the very
moment of publication by tho great religions
excitement pervading America. L’hcmritprvpoie

A short time ago, says an exchange, an old
man named 8. died in Crawford county, Ohio,
leaving a wife and children- By hiawfll his
estate was divided equally between the ehudfra.
The division displeased the eldest son, who re
fused to take his share of the estate, asserting
that he was not the son of the deceased 8. nor
of the widow. He claims that at the age „of
seven he was adopted by the deceased In Penn

The widow protests that ho Is her son, and sev

At first tho heirs were willing to believe him, as
it would lessen the number of heirs. , The young

prospect for a flrstrato crop of wheat is most ex.

Wheat Prospects.—The Chester, (111.) Herald,
of the 25th. says: “Wore itpossiblo for ns to
convey an accurate idea of the prospect which
the growing wheat now presents, it would seem
more fabulous than real. The accounts we
have been receiving for a while bock from per
sons coming into tows, have been of the most
cheering character, and wo aro informed that
every day adds something to the promise. The !
wheat stands unusually thiok upon tho ground,
seems finely rooted, and presents a very green,
luxurious color. This prospect Is general in
this region, so far as we have been able to learn.
There having been a much greater amount sown
last fall than usual, with the yield promised at
present, southern Illinois will be able to supply
lalf the world.”
Besetit or Advertising.—A case illustrative
of this came under oar observation yesterday.
About a year since Mr. Page, of the firm of
Beoj. Pago, Jr., of Pittsburgh, visited our city
for the purpose of introducing Bcerhavq's Hol
land Bitters. After some effort, he succeeded
in getting orders for a few hundred dollars.—
Ho then commenced a judicious system of ad
vertising the article, the result of whioh bos
been to increase the salo ten fold, and on visit,
ing hero again yesterday his orders amounted
to thousands instead of hundreds.—Cm. Gas.
