“Spare Tut Little Birds. ” —Tbe fact is in
disputable that one-fifth, if not one-fourth, of
the crop of the Union, amounting in value to
many millions of dollars each year, is destroyed
by insects. This renders the study of entomol
ogy almost iv necessity: for if without cbffck,
this evil continues to increase, the day may come,
sooner than many will believe, when the impor
tant agricultural products will be so diminished
from this cause alone, as to produce great dearth
and suffering, and when many of the best and
most valuibto fruits will be a rarity, If their
production is not rendered impossible. Note,
in verrification, all iho varieties of the plum,
gage, nectarine, and cherry fruit, which, from
the ravages of the different genera of curcolio,
or tho weevil, arc now rare, and seldom come to
perfection ; and even one species of this des
tructive insect has lately deposited its eggs in
the apple, and even in tbe peach. If this is to
continue without effort at prevention or remedy,
how soon may it be hopeless to look for, or even
expeot again to see, as in the days of old, the
various fruit tree* breaking down from the
burden of their golden and luscious fruit.
The evil is not dono by the perfect ineecL—
Many insects never feed after their metamor
phosis, but by the boring and deposition of tbe
egg, which soon hatches, and we h&vo a worm,
or the larvte, ravenous in its appetite, and de
structive to anything it comes in contact with.
The Larva, or worm, does all the mischief by
feeding on tho fruit, thus destroying its organi
zation ; after which, of coarse, it soon <trops to
the ground, into which tho grub or worm goes,
and there hibernates until the ensuing year,
when it revivifies, and comes forth the perfect
insect at precisely the right time and season “to
walk in the footsteps of its predecessors/' and
cause a greatly increase injury to whatever it
deposites its eggs in and its larvm feed on. The
utility of entomological study and examination
will be of paramount importance, for,\doubllessa
careful inquiry into tho habits, peculiarities, and
destructiveness, of the various insects that are
injurious to tho crop, must lead, in many instan
ces, to the discovery of an antidote for their
ravages, or remedy for tho injury they inflict.
There is evidently a great increase of insects
iujuriousto agricultural production, What is
tho cause of this? The rcoson is the greater
average mildness of winters, and the great des
truction of small birds, snakes, toad frogs, wat
er frog:*, terapins, hud ants, which fcea ou in
sects. When tho winter is very severe the cold
destroys myriads in their hibernating stato of
inaction, or temporary death. Again it des
troys the eggs, by bursting them, and thus ma
king them unproductive. The acute observer,
by the aid of o-microscope of only ordinary pow
er, can, after any hard winter, see quantities
of thu eggs (generally adherent to small twigs)
of the butterfly, ruptured and unproliffic, from
their generating power being destroyed by ex
cessive cohl.
Bat man has a greater friend than even these
useful animals. Tnaectt feed on each other, for
some arc predatory, and live on others, which is
their natural food otherwise. If this was not
so, every vegetable growth on tho surface oflhe
earth, from the multitude of insects, would have
loDg sineo been destroyed, and all animated be
ings must have ceased to live. If any donbt
this, look at the many varieties of the spider,
see the rcgalariiy, mathematicial precisioa,and
beauty of its web, woven wiih such art to entrap
its destined food Again the mud-dabbler, or
species of wasp, which preys on the Bpider its
6clf, by storing them away in magazines of clay
or mud, formed with considerable architectural
skill—a food for their larvnj to feed on. Thus
has an infinite Providence in mercy and good
neess placed checks whiob, apparently inoper
ative, inefictent, and imperceptible, still with
unerring certainty retain within ordained bounds
the nuliuiited ioercaso cf anyone species that,
from tbeir multitude, might become detrimental
or ties'ructive to all created beings.
The mo*t important and useful among birds
is the innocent little wren, intended by nature,
from tho number of its young, often twenty or
twenty fixe in number, its unceasing indastry
and pcrsevernoce, to be tbo general scavenger
of tho l'irx:e of the butterfly. On which they
and their young feed. Their interminable in
dustry, activity, and multitude of the larrro they
destroy, is exemplified in tho following experi
ment: I have attached to my country home a
nest of these little birds, near to which staftds a
paper mulberry tree, from which with watch in
hand, 1 counted, in twenty /our minutes, forty
two of the Drvte of the butterfly, conveyed to
the nest by ibis pair of wrens. What, then,
must be the amount destroyed in five weeks, the
tiine it requires to rear their young brood—
allowing twelve working hours to the day. It
is immense, almost boyond calculation in its con
sequences. Supposing only one grub in a min
ute will make the destruction of tho larTje by
thifl single pair amount, in five weeks, to 21,600
What, then, must be the number eaten by a few
pairs of this truly useful and melodious little
bird, which always seeks refuge near the hab
itation of man? How worse than cruel, then
their destruction by roischicreoua boys or sports
men, who for lack of often
wautonly destroy numbers of this and other
species »f little birds equally useful.
Uuless coercive means be taken to prevent the
destruction of such animals as feed on iosects,
the day is not far distant when failure of the
most important agricultural products will arise
from the depredation of insects: indeed many
fruits and vegetables are uow becoming scarce
from this cause alone, witness the potato and
pumkin, not exceeded by the Bwcct potato in
tUvor and nutriment, and many other valuable
vegetables unnecessary now to be mentioned.
.The noxt most useful bird, from Us great de
struction of insects is the bull bet, or, as it is
erroneously called, Ihe wliippor-will. Their 1
nutriment is goats of various species, some
predatory and others injurious to vegetation;
indeed all in the goat form is grist that comes
to thgir mill, even the tormenting and raooh
dreaded mosquito. From the stomach of one of
these birds I took and counted four thousand
seven hundred and two gnats, consisting of nino
different species—all the varieties I have noted
besides, I am certain the stomach contained,
partly digested, os many more, which, from
their partial dissolution, it was Impossible to
enumerate. Taking in view the rapidity of
digestion in birds, what myriads must a few of
this spocies .destroy in the coune of the summer.
The swallow comes next in the category.
Observe its complete mechanical adoption for
swift motion—has the vaunted power of man ever
invented a projectile more perfect in shape to
sormount tbo resistance given by the nlr to all
bodies rapidly moving through it? Observe how
thin perfect and bcautiftil little animal skims,
over river, lake, or plain, apparently in sport,
but actually destroying multitudes of insects for
food among others the fablod galUnippcr and
well known mosquito.
The water martin is useful by destroying
many species of a larger siie than tho proceed
ing. Again there is the tom lit and sap sucker
hereloforo considered to bs injurious by the
bole* they make in tho apple tree; from the
erroneous supposition of injury to the tree by
making these incisions, numbers bavo boea
slaughtered. How fatal a mistake. Notice
when the tree is completely bored all over the
body, aud some of tho chief limbs, how thrifty
it looks; how largo and sound the apple; and
how luscious tho flavor of tbo fruit. Observe
llio trees which hsro not been tinted bj theso
birds—many look skin bound, fruit small end
knotty, taste flat and watery. . ,
What ia the rationale of this! Simply that
each perforation ia made for the extraction of
the lartro of an ineect, which. If not romoted
would spoil the site and Aetor of tho fruit, nod
erentnafiy destroy tho treo. What a pity, then,
to exterminate so useful on animal. Man often
from impnlso, without proper consideration, Im.
initiates Ms best friend. Contrary to common
belief I consider tho famed locuat beneficial to
frail trees, notwithstanding the great outcry
about their dcstructireness,— a fact easily
substantiated if german to the present matter.
So tho more we learn of tho intricate mlnolim
of creation, tho greater our enrpnee andl admira
tion of the wonderfully wise system of cheok and
oonnler-oheck cstnblishcd, whero we ace animals
almost imperceptible and apparently tho most
useless nod contemptible, performing function,
whioh to tho superficial, wonld seem incidental
and objectless, but tho deop obsorrer of nature,
scanning c.erylhing with a philosophic eye, eeea
and recognixes in tho notion of the most insignifi
cant, a neemarj/ lint 0/ tie eJobi, Without whioh
tbo bounty and grnndcur of lha whole wonld be
marred; rendering it a doubtful problem if cre
ation itself could exist without their agency.
