MM. Thalbftr-g & \ituxtemps, Mr. Grau, ar
rived in the city yesterday, from a tour of un
precedented success in the Mississippi Valley.
He is norr makiug the fiaal preparations for
the grand concert which is to take placo on
Thursday evening. We expecL to see an im
menae house. The train on which he was
coming east on Saturday night ran upon a rock
which had rolled on the track of the Ohio Cen
tral railway about 8 miles this side of Newark
Tbo cars were much smashed but fortunately no
one was injured and Mr. Orau is spared to cater
still longer to the tastes of a refined and appre
ciative public. All needed information may
be obtained by reference to oor advertising col
umns this morning. The combination of talent
is an event; two such performers as are pre
sented have perhaps never travelled in company
Vi bcreTcr they have been thousands have flocked
to bear them and been delighted.
In addition to the leading characters in this
combination, we have M’lle Cairoli, the cele
brated soprano from New York, who is Prima
Donna of the Company; M. Ernest Perring, the
young Eoglisb tenor, from Her Majesty's Thea
tre, London; and Miss Kemp, the young Ameri
can contralto, who has been engaged expressly
for the production of English operas at the Acad
emy of Music. New York, will also be one of tho
valuable attractions; and Madame Vieuxtempe
is the musical conductress. *
With such a union of talent, there can be no
doubt that a complete success will attend this
concert, which will bo given at iho City Hall
without fail, rain or shine, as the arrangements
of the troup will not permit them to tarry here
bat for one eight.

Mu. Forest's Lecture. —This effort pf the
above gentleman at Lafayette Hall, last evening,
was pretty well attended, although the hall was
not full. There is nothing striking, profound or
original in the lecture, and yet it exhibits con
siderable thought and careful attention to com
position. Some of the phrases were perhaps
sQsceptible of a littlo change for the better.
“Too irresistible” is somewhat like “more
j square" ami “too extreme"—like “too perfect.”
; I'erhaps this is hypercriticism. We were pleased
; with the spirit of fairness and candor with which
| Mr. Forney analyzed the characters of Messrs. !
. Clay, Webster, Jackson and Calhoun. The I
j speaker’s Toico is extremely pleasant, and his !
I manner simple and unostentatious. He very i
| wisely, as we thought, said nothing about James |
i Buchanan. He <hJ remark, however, that one
of the statesmen cotemporary with Clay and
Webster now “wisely administered the Govern
ment. I- or a good whi.e wo were entirely un
able to reconcile this with the known position of
Mr. Forney, but we concluded that he, like a
true scholar, accepts the good old proverb, D*
morf«»/,Wr.,«saynothing but good of the dead.”
Mr. Forney will give us a taste of his quality,
along with our friend Mr. Stokes, on Wednesday
evening. J

Senate.— Mr. Stuart said he wouldn't discuss tbi
• ucition on the abstract principle* of slavery, bat on
the ground that the action of the Lccompton conven
tion waa an intentional fraud upon the people. Ho
then followed with considerable closeness the clauses
of tho President's message, contending that its rea

cases, absurd.

Mr. Douglas has just entered, and is bolding a long

Everybody is trying to get a peep at himrThe Turk

Mr. Bayard proceeded to demonstrate, by refer
ence to nnmerous legal authorities, that Lccompton
was framed with all duo formality.
Mr. Broderick reviewed at length the circumstan
ces attending the repeal of the Missouri Compromise
nod the- consequences following the repeal. Tbo
Sooth, he said, had by that fatal measure destroyed
its own interests, and was now seeking a remedy by
tho repeal Union; but would dissolution, he
asked, prevent the immigration of free labor into the
South? .No! wherever there is land for homes, there
free labor will find its way. Had the Missouri line
been permitted to stand, the free laborer would not
bare attempted to crofts it. A Senator had said that
Cotton is King, but bad omitted to tell us about the
fluctuations ut that staple. Gold is King, said Mr.
Broderick. He represented a State where labor is
honorable; where the highest persons are not
ashamed to own ihat tboy have delved in earth, ne
was glad the Senator from South Carolina bad spoken
about white slaves. He hoped that bis language
would stir up the two buudrod thousand while men
in that State who are now kept in subjection by the
thirty thousand wealthy slaveholders. ‘
Recess till seven o'clock.
The avenues to the Senate are so densely thronged
by tho multitudes anxious to hear Mr. Douglas, that
the messengers find it impossible to effect an entrance
and the reporters inside have been unable to send
their dispatches to the telegraph office.

Washing-tos, March 22.— Tbo Republican minor
ity of the Select Committee of fifteen, havo stated
through Mr. Morrill that they will not publish their
report, as that of tho majority has been spread batore
the public, and that of Mr. Harris is in type. They
allude to tho protracted struggle from which their
appointment arose, and declaro that the assumption
m tho part of tho majority that tho record is com

Kansas to a full ?ud fair vote of the people, is a con
ession that a thorough investigation would proro
atal to the extraordinary document. Tho President's
message, the report of the majority and tho report of
John Calhoun aro treated at length. The pledges of
submission on the part of Nebraska und Kansas ad
vocates, the President, and bo on down to the Union,
etc., also claim their attention. They say their wan

series of alleged frauds is set forth in chronological
