Cloveb.— Clover has an importance to farmers
which can scarcely be over-estimated, and we
fear it docs not recite sufficient consideration. As
furnishing a large amount of excellent pasture
and fodder for domestic animals, and as a means
of keeping np the fertility of our farms when
plowed under, it dsortea prominent place in the
system of rotation adopted by those who follow
either a mixed or a grain-growing husbandry.--
As general rule, every acre of Winter gram
should be “seeded down," as it is termed, to
clover in the Spring, to remain for at least one,
and not more than three years as a meadow or
pasture. , , . ,
The soil best adapted to the clover plant la
that of a somewhat clayey character—ouch as
will produce the best wheat- crops. Any soil
which will grow wheat will also grew olover.—
A deep well drained loam Bulls it well on oil. ill
drained soils it Buffers much from Winter- klling,
especially if the spring prose one of littlo snow
and rnriable tomperature. On light sous it needs
the assistance of manure to prose profitable.
Closer is usually sown early in Spring upon
Winter grains, and occnsionlly with oats and
barley. With the latter it generally does well,
especially if sown in good season. Upon wheat,
we sow in March, when the season is sufficiently
ad sauced. While slight frosts continue, the
Blight cracking and hearing of soil, though
their action will generally furnish a sufficient
covering'for the seed, though some recommend
sowing later, and harrowing in, argmng that this
proceess not only covers the eloser more per
fectly, bat benefits tho wheat crop. When seed
ing with Spring grains, it 1) usually sufficient
to pass over with the roller, sowtng tho closer
seed afler the last harrowing.
The benefit which closer derives from plaster
seems a '‘fired.fact ia agriculture,” not needing
special remark in this connection- Hence they
have become associated in tho minds of moot
farmers as partners in the product desired end
the one usually accompanies the other. We
think however, that the sowing of plaster upon
wheat fields seeded to closer is frequently de
ferred too late. The closer needs its aid when
it first comes up; beside, if sown Into the wheel
is injured by-lts causing too rank a growth of
straw at the time when the grain is formuig.-
We should sow plaster ns early ns April, if pos
sible, open wheal, and open Spring grain coed
ing ns scon as it fairly appeared above ground.
The amount of seed necessary for an acre
depends upontho character of the so 1, hut there
seems no disposition ns yet to seed lee heavily.
Loamy coils need less than clayey, and the
growth of tho crop with which it is seeded
wether Urge or small-tos considerable influ
ence. A peck to the acre is little cnoogh-some
use more, but many lees. It Is poor economy
to sow but half enough to cover the snrfnce
the pasturage and hay are of much less value
and the saving of five dollar. '" ' c d o ""
entails a lose uf five times that amount in tho
pr ih“re are many vareties or the clover plant,
but those most grown ore the onmmon red, or
Northern clover, of which we believe there are
two varieties, the Urger, “f peavine clover,
and tho medium —ns it is csUed perhaps, from
lying between that and the Southern or small
varUty. The medium kind makes the best hay
and is equally valuable as a green manure^
We have already remarked upon the great
value of clever for this latter purpose Some
of the reasons why it is so, may bo hus briefiy
slated. Clover takes less from and
more from the atmosphere, in propori,„n to the
feeding and manuring value of Its product, than
most other plants. It ha. numerous roots
long bulky stalks, and abundant leaves, each
emptying vegetable matter to the soil, A
luxuriant growth of clover is an cicelcnt pre
paration for any and every crop. It. forspend
ing room loosen and deepen the sol and bring
to their support and to the surface the elements
of fertility below the reach of most other crops.
This, too, is tho reason why clover delight. In
a deep, fresh eoil, and why after subsoil plow
ing. it is so certain to succeed.— Rural Neu
