Theedilor „f that journal, however, who is good authority in regard to Washington aiioirs, andjtho has had some twenty-fire years experience in obserring tho run of notional politics and the morements of politicians who congregate at that city, lakes a different view of tho matter from that takieh by the correspondent of his journal. Ad mitting that if the Republicans and their AnU- Lecompton allies should consent to the taking of ,TOte in the House of Representatives at this time, the result could not be otherwise than fatal, the editor relies on the good sense and management of the friends of freedom foMhe ultimate defeat of the scheme. The Courier says: ••The Democratic Party under tho ruling or their Speaker, proved to the countrysomofew weeks since, that a minority, under the rules of the House, and Bpeaker Orr’o construction of these rules, may prevent a vote upon any ques tion when they once gravely delcrmmeßotod^ They determined that there should be no vole upon Mr. Harris’ motion for a committee to ex amine into the Kansas frauds; »“d sitting per tactics to adopt, who can doubt Ihat the RranbUcas party, or so many of them at least as F are prepared to stand by their pnnciplcs instead of practising that crpeiency has, and we trust ever wiU insure defeat, are . prepared to prevent any vote upon Lecomp % ton fraud by the present Congress. We know 'rihat there are those who, abandon our pnuci; dies, say—“ Let the Democracy have their way and foreenppn the people of Kansas the Le eempton Constitution, and their ruin is inevitable. The law will be resisted, civil war will pervade the country, and the and the slave power, bo ambulated. This we believe. But shall we do ovil, or permit it to be ddue, that good may flow therefrom r God forbid ■ and may all who counsel such erjicfiency, now as heretofore, be confounded and disgraced by their evil practices recoiling upon themsolves. Most aasurellyrthe people will not sanc n 7 such proceeding; and what is more, it wiu at once be proclaiming, that our opposition L>‘ h « proceedings of the Executive and thedema gogues w ho control him, is not based upon ciple and a determination to defend tho conßUl tional rights of the people of Krnisas, but « Urn result of mere political expediency seeking, the control of tho Government, even .at the hazard of Civil War. The time has arrived wbe ° ' becomes the’duty of the Press to y ak plamly uuto this subject; and in the performance of that I duty we tell the Republican Party in the _House of Representatives, that if they permii the naasaeo of the Act forcing upon the people of Kansas tho Lecompton Constitution, they, they only, will be held responsible for the Civil War which must inevitably follow. We agree with the Courier in its position that no consideration of partisan expediency should influence the course of the Republican members of Congress in the Kansas matter, and we arc pleased to observe by their course, that without a singlo exception, they are acting under a more noble and patriotic motive,’ in listing consummation of tho great fraud. The fact that the admission of Kansas under the Lecompton Constitution would annihHate the democratic party—would leave James Buchanan without a party in the Korth to opoligiie for his errors, or to Bupport his administration—ehould not in duce us to forget that the same cause which would have this effect would plunge Kansas in - bloodshed, convulse and disorganire the nation, disgrace the country and bring reproach and dishonor on tho very name of our Republic The country needs the services of the Republi cans, who are of the people. It has been so long ruled and plundered by mere partirans-men who forget their obligations as American citi zens in their blind subservience to party—men who were at all rimes willing to barter away the principles of the government in obedience to a slavish fear of idle threats, or to gratify their lust for power and positional has been so long in this condition that it is sadly in need of the aid and support of those • who are actuated by higher motives and governed by nobler impulses. Let the Republicans continue to resist, as heretofore, the consummation of this Lecompton infamy by every honorable means within their power. Shouldil prevail let it be I 1 II Republican mem -4—ronaSgSTs. While on this subject, we cut the following from the proceedings of the State Senate on Thursday last: Mr. Wilkins, a bill to exempt railroad compa nies from the payment of a tonnage tax. The two bills might appear to be contradictory, lie believed the tonnage tax ought to be repealed. These bills would bring the whole enbject before the committee, for their Gaizam, on leave, made a statement. He said ’in effect, that whilst the railroad companies have been active in circulating and forwarding petitions for the repeal of the tonnage tax, a strong feeling in opposition to the repeal has been grow inf up over the State, and particularly in the Western counties. The people are noir moving on the subject, and he asked that noth ing said by his colleague might have the effect the opinions of Senators on this ve y important subject. In.a few days, he (Mr. Oa, jam) expected to have memorials from mtizens of the West on the subject, to which he would call the particular attention of the Senate. Sexatou Cameeox AND TUB COEUEESSIOXAI Peivtixq. —Senator Cameeox, of this Stale, made a very important statement a few day. ago, in his plane in the Senate, in regard to the eltrae agent charges made for certain volumes ordered by Congress. It is true beyond a doubt that the public printing has been the source of an incon ceivable amount of extravagance and corrnp^ tion, and we are glad that Mr. CAUcnos has taken the subject in hand. Although he is, po litically, on the wrong ride of the house to ac compli much now, yet his well known energy and pereeverence may pave the way for future ] reforms in this branch of the government ex penditures. Senator Cameeox proposes the abo lition of book printing by the government, leav ing the matter to individual enterprise. This is right and proper, and we trust the suggestion may prevail MMSEJ.
