wish lo call the attention of your readers (o a
Dew fruit which by pomologists is justly regarded
as the most valuable acquisition made to the
list of frails for many years. We think no one
will be surprised al our good opinion of it when
wo inform them (hat tho above cutgires a fair
representation of the actual size, ns well os the
general appearance of a olaster of berries, no
larger than many we have sees, handled and
tasted. ob to in.
It is a new and perfctly distinct variety, and
not the common kind improved by cultivation.
■lt originated near New Rochelle, New Y'ork,
and was first brought into notice by Mr. Soacor,
who is much better entitled to tho name of it
than the gentleman who, for pecuniary advan
tages, wishes it to bo colled the Lawton.
The shape of the fruit, it will be seen, is noi
that of the wild blackberry, but resembles the
Bovey'e Seedling strawberry. We are inclined
to the opinion that it is an accidental cross of
the common blackberry and the dewberry. \Yc
have been led to this contusion from fbo follow
ing considerations. The first year the plaots
trail on tho ground, very much like the dew
berry, but aftrwards they grow uprightly, very
stoutly, from ten to fifteen feet high. The shape
of the froit is not mulberry like, as the common
blackberry is, but resembles the dewberry,
though it is much larger, and when perfectly
ripe the tlavor is quite equal.

The plants are very hardy and vigorous.—
more so than the common varieties, —and euwd
the cold well. The fruit is juicy and fine flavor
ed, with very few seeds. The site can hardly
be appreciated by those who have seen only (be
common Kinds. Of about the average size,
sixty lo eighty berries will fill a quart measure
while of those a Utile above the medium, from

diameter, though larger berries are quite com
mon. season.
They commence ripening about the middle of
July, and continue from five to eight weeks
This is most opportune. Ripening as they do
just at the eeasou when there are no other fruits
—when the strawberry and raspberry crops
have bceo exhausted, and peaches and grapes
have not yet appeared—blackberries could not
well be dispensed with, especially when we laki

The yield ifl enormous. One of ihe editors of
1 the New York Tribune says: **We received n
few days since an invitation from Mr. Georgo
Seymour to visit hia nursery and view several
acres in bearing. We arrived on the ground
about 10 A. M., in company wilh a number of
ladies and gentlemen, who immediately begun
to insinuate themselves among the bushes, which
were standing very thickly, and all well laden
with fruit. Astonishment seized the parly, and
while viewing the gorgeous display we for a
time forgot to taste the tempting berries. The
bushes had occupied this hold for two years,
and were well supplied .with aide eh'oojs, nil
loaded wilh berries in every stage, from the
smallest green to the largest ripe blackberry,
and they icere blackberries ! Those wonderful
berries produced on themonnUin, or by the old
stone wall on tbo homestead furm, which pro
duced so fine a flavor in oaryoulbfal days, lost
all the deliciousness ascribed to them by a ling
ering memory when wo bad tasted a few of the
fully ripe New Rochelles. Shall we say how
many bushels of fine fruits are taken from an
acre' We dare not. We had with as several
horticulturists who are engaged in supplying
New York with fine fruits. They counted the
berries on several bushes, measured them in
baskets, aod they wero so astonished at the
amount which it might be possible to grow on
an acre, that they dared not to repeat it to the
uninialed in the wonders of fruit growing. We
bad learned from circulars that from four to
eight quarts wero produoed by single canes, and
that five hundred to one thousand ripe berrios
were to be counted on a cane of average size;
we found one cane having over sixteen hundred!

ccfits at wholesale ! Raspberry baskets filled
with these berries will sell for 15 cents, and
tbe retailers get whatever they choose to ask.—
Judging from the present demand, we beliove
five hundred acres may he planted to this black
berry, and the whole results sent to tho New
York market, they would fail of being plentiful
enough to be witbin tho reach of all. In fact
we do not believe tbe market can well be over
stocked. SOIL.
They appear so far to grow well on almost any
soil. Some cultivators recommend moist loam,
or even clay. We have them planted on both
rich and poor soil. Wo.gathered some of our
best berries last season from tbo poor soil- The
editor of the Affriculturitl says: “The best
growth and fruiting wo havo seen is upon a
rocky side hill, though perhaps not better than
others on dark muck and peaty soil.”
Lest it might be thought that we overrate this
famous fruit, we will add the opinions of a few
gentlemen who are every woy competent to
form a correct judgment of its merits.
Mr. Charles Downing, in the Jlnrlicvlluriit,
thus speaks of it:
“ Having beard a good deal said about tho
New Rochelle Blackberry, for the pan year or
two, and knowing that many of tho new fruits
were over praised, I made a special visit, a few
days since, to see for myself, and 1 can assure
you I was well paid for my trouble. There is
no hnmbug abont it, and tho only wonder is
that it has not been more generally introduced
and propagated before. The fruit is large and
sweet. It is an enormous bearer; indeed the
quantity (considering tho large size of the fruit,)
surprised me,*nnd tho berries were perfect,"
•* As to its size, it will surprise most persons
who see it for the first time. At Norwalk we
saw several stalks bearing from five to eight
quarts, eaoh. We tried some that had been
gathered over forty hoars, and found tho flavor
quite good. A quart of them numbered seventy
ono berries. We picked a quart from vines
which had received no manure for two years
past, and from which tho Urgent had just been
selected for the Now Haven Horticultural So
ciety, and found that seventy-two of them filled
a quart measure.
“The vines grow quite large—many of them
over an inch in diameter, and the fruit hangs in
clusters, in size more like very large Green
Gage Plains, than the ordinary Blackberry.
Tbe flavor is not apparently diminished by its
large size, and the few seeds is not its least
recommendation. We think this berry a valua
blo acquisition to oar domestic fruits, and wor
thy of a’place in every garden.— Amer. Agnail. .
“We alluded the other day to the cultivated
berries, called the New Rochelle, raised by Mr.
George Seymour, at South Norwalk. They are
not the wild Blackberry, but a peculiar variety
by themselves. They grow to four times the
size of tho common berry, have a delicious fla
vor, yield abundantly, are hardy, easily raised,
and remain in bearing some six weeks. Tills
fruit will be a great accession to our list of
common berries, and deserves the attention of
our citizens; who aro conspirious for the variety
and excellence of their horticultural productions.

place wherever gravitation has free play. Either
these gentlemen have immediately risen in the
scale of creation, or England has immensely
sunk, if she accepts her new rulers without a re
monstrance. We are reminded, however, that 1
this is a moral question; nay, more, it is an
affair of honor, when all ordinary estimates are
out of place, and where a grain of true dignity
is worth more than ship-loads of utility or genius.
It is belter to retrieve our honor with France
under the auspices of Derby, Disraeli, Malmes
bury, EUenborougb, Bulwcr Lytton, Lord John
Manners, General Peel, and the rest, than to
flounder on wilb a bankrupt character, under
Palmerston, Clarendon, Sir Cornewall Lowis,
Sir George Grey, Sir Charles Wood, anJ their
colleagues We have exchanged intellectual for
moral greatness, and can afford to part with the
false glare of bold and constructive legislation,
if we can only Bay that we have not pocketed an
affroot. For our part, wo most devoutly hope
lbat our new Ministers will not bavo to encoun
ter the same trial as the last: that no scoundrel
will fling an English grenade or fire an English
revolver at the Emperor for ihe next twelve
month: that Walewski will henceforth content
himself wilh suggesting topics to some fifth-rato
English paper, and that the French Colonels
may find a foe worthy of tbeir prowess in the
interior-of Africa. We should be glad lo see
Lord Derby’s political path laid wilb the softest
turf, and cleared of all the dangers that pro
verbially Ho in the course of a statesman. Yet,
evou at the best, we have pome serious misgiv
ings. We are far more sure of our loss than of
our gain in the exchange we have just suffered.
Grant that there is something low in political
ability, and that intellect is of (hi? world, yet
we do not feel quite confident that the present
gain of moral worth is such as to dispense with
those vulgar appliances.
Nor can it be forgotten that this is a practical
world. Parliament, after performing u grand
not of faith in the immolation of Palmerston and
his recreant colleagues, will probably spend
some lime, at least the fortnight's recess, in a
pleasing thrill of Belf-complaceocy. It will see
llrittannia holding the balance, wherein Palmer
ston and Clarendon kick the beam, while Derby,
Malmesbury, and the other champions of Eng
lish honor descend with native gravity. But the
grandest spectacles weary in time, and the in
defatigable malice and ingenuity of politicians
are sure lo rniso up new questions, in which old
scores will bo forgotten, and intellect, expedi
ency, and such hard things onoo more hold
sway. When this is the case—when il cdhics to
India, to China, to' Parliamentary Reform, to
the consolidation of our laws, to a dozen other
subjects impending over us, it remains to bo
ascertained whether tho new Ministry will hold
their own—to use tho vulgar slang of secular
politicians—against the old. Mere moral worth,
even in the shape of a grind national peonnee,
will not count long against either commercial or
political utilities. It will bo considered, too,
that the sacrifico was performed, the virtue ex
hibited, and the honor acquired previous to ihc
new Ministry, and by the act of its Inaugura
tion. So, before long, we shall all be brought
round to tho old question—what is to bo done *
and the statesmen who answer this most to the
satisfaction of the public will bo likely to carry
tho day. There may be no urgent demand for
the India bill, and Chino may be resigned to the
Plenipotentiaries out there : but as for this Re- I
form bill, there seems no escaping it. »»hat
