Murdi-Gra* Day In New Orleana, or (he
Last Day of the Carnival.
' Correipoadecco of the Pittsburgh Gazette.}
Dear Gazette:—On arriving at the Crescent
City, vrc took lodgings in the Si. Charles Hotel,
and soon found ourself surrounded with & mot
ley group of strangers, numbering, it is said,
over seven hundred persons, and representing
doubtless every State in the Union, as well as
many of the principal nations of the world. The
weather for some days has beeh charming It
is difficult to convince our Northern friends that,
while they are shivering over coal fires, we are
walking on the shady side of the street—roses
in full bloom, and birds caroling on trees green
with foliage.
Lost Tuesday was the last day of the Carnival,
known as Mardi-Gras day, or fat Tuesday. It
is usually celebrated hero much as in Home,
with the difference, that persons of every grade
of society in Rome mask and appear in public
on that festive occasion, while here they are
mostly, except the children of both sexes, of that
class who do not occupy a very respectable po
sition in society. Quite a large portion of tho
female maskers, whom one sees here on such oc
casions, are disreputable characters. We learned
that, many years ago, the most respectable per
sons appeared on the streets, masked, but of late
only those named.
As the day wore on, the number of maskers
increased. Now and then a solitary individual
would thread his way Along the crowded thor
oughfares; then companies of n score or more
would pass along in a crowd. In the afternoon,
hundreds appeared ou the streets in fantastical
dresses and masked, some on horseback, others
iu vehicles, and others on foot. The occasion
brought out more persons than common, doubt
less because the weather was ao very pleasant.
As might be expected, the windows, balconies,
and sidewalks uf the principal streets, wero
thronged with spectators.
Towards dark, many of the shrouded ones be
came boisterous and vulgar from the effects of
liquor, while a few exposed the character of the
life they led. After nightfall, several very
beautiful females of the better, “baser sort,*" 1
came into the rotunda of our Hotel, dressed in
men's clothing, with their hair puffed in imita
tion of the “soap-lock geotry" among males, aad
wearing slouched bats. Some of these persons
were exquisitely beautiful. They mingled freely
among the crowd, smoking cigars, and on invi
tation partook of liquor at the bar, all the while
talking in a flippant style. It was a painful
sight to behold females, with angelic beauty,
masking a devilish heart. We encountered these
lovely but erring ones as we were sauntering
around the capacious rotunda of the Hotel,
which, by the way, is a kind of rendezvous for
meeting friends, and with sincere and heart fell
pity we watched their movements for a short
time.
Hut tho great event, absorbing all others, was
the Festival of the "Malic Kreice 0/ Comut,"
which came off about 9 o’clock, P. M., by a torch
light public procession previous to their entrance
into tho Varieties Theatre, where their invited
guests had assembled to witness tho performance
of this mysterious association.
At the first appearance of this Mistio Krewe, 4
in public last year, they gave illustrations of
Milton’s “Paradise Lost." Their exhibition this
year, on Mardi Gras, was tho representation of
Ileatncn Mythology of the olden time in all its
glory. Tho Krewe were bonutifally dressed,
generally, and all masked. It is said that the
cost of this gorgeous exhibition exceeded seven
thousand dollars. In company with thousands
who thronged the tborobgfares where the pro
cession passed, we witnessed the grand sight.
In that procession “all the gods at once" were
present. Comus, god of “festivity,” led the van:
Momufl, god of Mirth, Janus, who opened the
gate of time. Spring, Summer, Autumn, Win
tor and Flora were there: P >mona scattering
fmit, Vertumnus and .Cere.-, looking to the
farm and the orchard, Pan, and his fauns and
Satyrs, Bacchus and Silcmis the one the king,
the other the subject of wine.
Then came Diana of the chase; following her,
the Muses nine, with Vesta chaste goddess of
fire. Hygela, Esculapios, Fortuua, Plulis,
Tberats, Nemesis, Saturn, Cybele, Jupiter with
his accompanying train, Juno, Iris, Argus,
Atlas, Hercules, Mars, Minerva, Vulcan, Venus,
Cupid, Hymen, Aurora, Apollo, Nox, Castor and
Pollux, Eolus, Boreas, Notus, Earns, Zephyrus,
Neptaoe, AmphiLrite, Pluto, Proserpina, Cerbe
rus, Hecate and the Furies. Was not this a
train ?
After passing through two or three of tho
principal streets tbo Krewe disappeared in the
luck part of the theatre, it is reported, and at
atsignal, tho curtain was raised and the first
tableaux was given representing the naming of
Athens by Minerva. The contest between Nep
tone and the Goddess of Wisdom, resulted in
the victory of the latter. The second tableux
presfnted Aurora, “fair daughter of the dawn,”
Apollo, the glorious god of day,” and Bombrc
Night, surrounded by tho Hours, Ca9tor and
Pollux. Time and Destiny. The third represent
ed a Bacchanalian revel, the fauns and satyrs,
Comus, Motnus. Faunua, Pan, Silenus, with
Bacchus in the centre. The “Krewe ofComus”
then formed in procession displaying themselves
to the admiring audience, afterwards freely
mingling with the lookerfvpn. At 12 o'clock,
the termination of Mardi-Oras, the Mistio
Krewe, suddenly and silently withdrew, leaving
the invited guests to while away the time until
late in the morn. Who the Mistio Krewe are
no one can tell.
Thus ended a noted day—the like not witnes
sed in any other city in the Union. Wax.

RrssiA Amono the Barbarians.— The Chi
nese Emperor has ordered Lon thousand catties
of gunpowder to be used in protecting the
Amoor Territories againU the encroachments of
the Russian barbarianß. Thin is said to bo re
gnrded as a virtual declaration of war against
Russia. It la considered as such by Count Ton
tintinc, the Russian Ambassador, who has taken
up his quarters at Hong Kong.
The Liverpool 77wies, in speaking of the col
lision between the steamship North American
and ship Leander, of Bath, resulting in the loss
of the latter, with ton of those on board, says it
is a singular fact that almost all the persons who
were on the deck of the ship at the time of the
accident were drowned, and that the majority of
those whtf were saved were sleeping in their
berths.

New Yore Congressmen. —lt is rumored that
Mr Ilaskio no longer stands alone among the
New York Democrats in bis opposition to Le
compton. A correspondent writes that'Hon.
Horace F. Clarke will vote against Lecompton
as it is now presented. Other Democrats who
opposed Mr. Harris’ resolution of inquiry are
expected to go with him. —Albany Journal.
Dcnnixo, when in tbo fall flash of celebrity
aL the bar, was asked how ho got through such
an accumulation of business. He replied:
“Some I do, some does itself, and the rest is
never done at all. ’
A Democratic leader of Indiana expresses
the opinion that if tho Lecompton Constitution
is forced through Congress, that State will go
Republic in next fall by forty thousand voles.
The Detroit Tribune says, a loving couple
were married at Albion, a few days since, and*
having no mooey, they paid the minister with
two bushels of black walnuts !
Aldast, March 7.— ln the Assembly, last
night, afLer a long and exciting debate, resolu
tions opposing the passage of the Kansas Lc
compton Constitution by Congress, were passed,
46 to 23.
The Cleveland Plaindealer says: “Of the
ITO.OOODemocratß in Ohio who vojed for James
Buchanan, 160,000 at least are opposed-to the
Lecompton Constitution.”
Gsv. Buford, who was so prominent in Kan
sas affairs a year or two ago, has given op the

The Winter is Europe aso Asia.— Accoanta t
from Italy state that for the first time in the I
present century the river Po has been frozen j
over at Ferrara for Mine time, admitting tho i
constant passago ■ ’ man ami beast. The onus- ,
ml severity of th. winter iu that part of Italy j
has caused great mortality 1
From a lolier dated Constantioople, Feb. JJ, i
we take the following :
“Snow has fallen until yesterday without aDy |
interruption for 16 days. There has not been a j
winter of equal eeTerily for more than ‘JOyears. j
The snow has extended to Smyrna and the
aJjacent district of Asia Minor, and even Ibe
Greek islands arc clothed in while—an app-onr- 1
anco most unusual and remm uablc. Tho suf-j
feriugs of ihe poor are very u»-., •>; their habits j
and habitations are not prepared t resist £■) in- j
clement a season. Many ol the pu-.-test dwt'.l-j
ing' have tumbled down from th-* r-ijht of
snow on their roofs, for they arc lain.- more
substantial lhaD castles of cardboard, and very
few are weather-light.''
TERMS 1
Accounts from Asia Minor describe snow
storms, in on« of which a Greek monastry .was
buried, and the five mo«k9 had to be excavated
by the Turks. At Malta the snow, which had
not fallen since the Russian campaign of 1812.
was some feet high, and accompanied with hail
and tempests.
Baroh Munchausen.— Miss Brewster (daugh
ter of Sir David), in her “Letters from Cannes
and Nice,” says: “Baron Munchausen isatNicei
My father met him at a pic-nic the other day,
and hoard from him the history of his celebra
ted namesake. One of his ancestors bad a chop
lain who was famous for “drawing a long bow”
—told in fact tho most false and extravagant
stories. His patron, the Baron of those days,
wrote a book oul-lleroding Herod, being a col
lection of still more marvellous adventures, for
the purpose of shaming the priest; for which
laudible design he was punished, by having his
own name held np to posterity as Me story-teller
par cictUcnft.'' This shows that it i 9 very dan
gerous to lie, even in jest. The Munchausens'
are a Hanoveran family.
Opening of the Slave Trade. —The follow
ing telegraphic dispatch from New Orleans,
speaks for itself:
“New Orleans, La., March J. — A bill passed
the House of Representatives of this State to
day, authorizing the company—already organ
ized—to IMPORT TWENTY-FIVE HUNDRED
FREE BLaCKS from the coast of Africa, to be
INDENTURED for not less than FIFTEEN
YEARS!”
Here we have ia effect (he slave trade opened
by the Legislature of a State, notwithstanding
it is declared by an act of Congrcsß to be piracy.
Quite an excitement was created among some
of Mr. Beecher’s congregation after service on
Sunday morning, upoa the discovery on the
pinto for the poor of a massive gold ring, which
was at once identified as belonging Lo the wife
of the most prominent candidate in the Presi
dential canvas of 1850. There is a very sharp
competition still pending for possession of the
ring—which will probably contribute more lhan
its value to the relief of the poor of Brooklyn
