As a contrast to the general healthy action of that party in favor of sound principles in past years, and as a pernicious precedent and pretext for fnture de viations from tho path of conscientious duty, it has been read, and always will be read, wiih emotions of pain by every sincere lover of truth and fair-dealing. Constituted and controlled as it was, tbe action of the Convention on the Kan sas question does not represent tbe views of the Democracy of tbe State on that, question; and wo perform a plain, if not a pleasing duty, in de claring our unalterable opposition to tbe posi tion of tbe Convention in favor of forciog the Lecompton Constitution upon tbe protesting people of Kansas. We accept tho nominations of tbe Convention, for Justice of tbe Supreme Court, and for C&nal Commissioner. They were ; fairly made; tbe candidates are consistent Dem ocrats. But while we acknowledge tbc right of tbe Convention lo present candidates for the support.of the Democratic party, we emphati cally reject tbe attempt of that body to interpo late the Dtmocratic creed by the introduction of eentimenti hostile lo that creed, and in distinct con travention of the pledget and the principles of the Democratic party. The Intolerance or Tvbanny.—ln reading over i he proceedings of (be Lecoraplon majority -in ihe United States Senate, and the columns of the Washington Union, wa are often tempted to inquire, not merely whether this is a land of liberty and of law, but whether we are really growniog under a despotism ? When we recur to the history of this whole Lecompton swindle, tre are at a loss to decUe which has been most scandalous, the course of tbe intolerant and in furiated banditti in Kansas, or their backers in other parts of tho country. The fraud and the force in one have been succeeded by domineer ing insolence and brutal bullying in the other. Tde Duty or all Candidates for Popular Favor in the Present Crisis. —Should the can didates nominated by this Convention agree to support the Lecompton fraud, or accept that part of the platform adopted by tbe mojority of tbc Convention, nothing will save them from an overwhelming defeat. Fairly as they have been nominated, the acceptance by them of doctrines so revolting to the public sentiment will blow all party usages into the air. It is notorious that the men who were most active in putting the Le oompton poison into the Democratic creed at this very Convention, were, in nearly every case, tbe bitter opponents of Justice Porter, because he was shown to be the bosom friend of Governor Packer, who is at this day as openly opposed to tbc Lecomptoo fraud, and asnnrcscrvedly against the Kansas policy of tbe Stale Convention, as either Douglas, or Walker. Tbe officers of ihe Federal Administration were a unit against Porter. They swarmed to the State capital against him. And when they found they could not defeat his nomination, they determined to adopt a platform, which they knew woold utterly defeat him if bf accepted it. This is notorious. Should he now*yi&td to their importunities, and swallow the dose they have dragged for him. he will be left in a hopeless minority in October. The crisis is at hand, and wo to those who sup pose it will pass over with the adoption of the Lecompton Constitution by tbe Congress of the United States. Thfonly safety for (he nominees of the Democratic party of (his State it at once to repudiate the Kansas declarations of the Harrisburg Slate Con vention This is the bold, honest and patriotic course Jrt»OE Pobtec's Position —Tbo declaration of Mr. Cassidy, oDe of ihe delegates to tbe Harris burg Convention from Ibis city, that Judge Por ter. tbe Democratic candidate for the vacancy on the Supreme Bench, “would -land upon any platform*’ that might be couatructed by that Convention, excites much comment. Wo did not hear Mr. Cassidy's declaration. We do not know whether he made it in tbo language reported; but we do know that all Judge Porter's well known personal and political antecedents have been of a character to induce the belief that he is the decided opponent of the Lccompton swindle. He was bitterly persecuted and opposed by the proscriptive supporters ofLecomplon in this city, as well at the delegate elections as at the State Convention itself. Ho was appointed to the Su preme Bcuch by Governor Packer, the open and bold opponent of Lecompton, both before and after the Convention : and his own declarations in support of Governor Packer’s opinions, have been frequent and unreserved. These indica tions united the whole oflbe Union anti-Lecotnp ion Democracy ia tbe State Convention in his favor, and they convince us that he will not place himself upon a platform which, bn this subject of Kansas, is an insult to Governor Packer, and to the sentiment of Pennsylvania. Shall the Test uc Made ?—lt is given out that tbe work of excommunication ia to be com menced upon all who do not accept the resolu tions of the Harrisburg Convention, on the Kansas question, as tbe new gospel of the Dem ocratic party. “Bonds and death" are to be awarded to all who henceforward dare to resist the Lecompton swindle, or who will notapprovo the decree that it shall be forced upon tho peo ple. We accept the issue. Denying, as we do, the right of any Adminis tration, or of any Convention, or of any party, to commit us to a proposition so monstrous, we hope all candidates for publio favor will at once take sides. If the bayonets of tbe Feder al Government aro to be ÜBed against (he pro testing people of Kansas ; and if the patronage of the Federal Government is to be arrayed against all men, in and out of office, in other Territories and States, who will not approve this cruel crusade, and accept this shameful fraud, we are ready for the struggle. Let it come. “The will of the majority” on the one side, and the will af tho minority, backed by patronage and power on the other. The oal- LOT-BOX VERSUS TITE CARTtIIDQE-BO.T ; the peo ple versus power. Let the test bo made, tbo sooner the better. • The Sphino Emigration. —Although the win ter is still Upon us, the emigration peculiar to the spring season has set in, and takes two di rections. The first is toward California, in con sequence of tbe large reduction of the faro be tween New York and San Francisco. Probably this may also be augmented by the Mormon war obstructing the passage of the overland route. The steamships from New York to tbs Isthmus are now running crowded. Tbe other direction of the migratory multitudes is toward tbe States and Territories of tbo immediate West. Missouri and Kansas promise to be tbe main attactions this year. Kansas will absorb a vast bulk of populatiqp. Bat Missouri, which last summer attracted many thousands of free State settlers, will now receive an accession, U is thought, of some twenty thousand families, or more than one hundred thousand persons. The Bt. Louis Dem ocrat tells us that throughout tho winter almost every county in the State presenting favorable locations has been traversed by pioneers and agents of the northern migration, and that the newspapers from ahroad have re-echoed the fa vorable report which they make upon the soil, temperature, and resources as an enticing abode for the free labor of tbe land that has been thrown out of employ by late reverses elsewhere. Washington, Monday, March B.— Mr. Green’s notice of his intention to press a vote on the Kansas bill in the Senate on Monday next, is a chaoge in tbe Lecompton tactics which indicates that the Lecomptonitea are alarmed at the effect of tbe debate on tho country, and are ac cordingly desirous to choke it off. The growing convictions of the people that civil war must follow tbe attempt to force Kan sas into tho Union, is bringing letters innumer able here since Mr. Seward’s speech, urging the Lecomptonitea to desist, —hence the necessity for precipitancy. It is doubtful if the question can be tatran next week.— N. r. Tima. JHtstrllanrouß, a. C. CASFBELL.
