RIDDLE «r Co., EDITORSand PROPRIETORS. PIITBBTTBOH: VII. MONDAY MORNING, MARCH 8, 1868. ix... Tns HABWrinmn Noxn.Anoss.-Thc Bo chan&n Stria ConTcntion has nominated Wm. A. Ponmn, of Philadelphia, for Supreme Judge, and WaainnfnosT, of Fayette county, late U. S. Marshal, for Canal Commissioner. The for mer is the present incumbent, under the appoint ment of the Governor, and the other is the chief bugler of Jons. L. Dawson, who served the President so unscrupulously in packing the com mittees as presiding officer of the late Conven tion. Ho did the dirty work which the majority of the Convention imposed on him, and they did his. It was n fair exchange of commodities. The platform of the Convention was cut and dry before it met. It endorses Kinfe James to the fall, and pledges tbo party to carryout his monarchical policy. There were but 21 men with dean hands in that Convcntion-barely 21 out of 133 Who hod not bowed the knee to Baal. It was a gathering of office-holders and office hunters—U. 8. Marshals, Postmasters, and Custom-house officers, and a hungry pack of curs keen upon the scent of office. Probably the State or the nation never before saw such a mercenary crew gathered together in one mass. To expect anything like an honest utterance from such a Convention would be ridiculous.— It was packed to serve the vile purpose it has accomplished, utterly regardless of future con sequences to the party, and it has done the work marked out for it, without a why or a wherefore —without a sigh of compunction or any other evidence that its members have consciences to accuse them of the guilty deed. But it is something, in King James’ own State, to find twenty-one delegates in a party convention of his friends, ‘TJo&wed t*J Influence and nnbrihedby gala.” AU honor to the twenty-one! They are intend ing, wo hear, to niter a manly protest against the degradation inflicted on the-party by the packed convention of satellites. We hope they will speak out like men. This is no time to be mealy-mouthed. Was lit FbOst, the nominee for Canal Com missioner, is for Lecompton out-and-out. There Is no mistake about his position. ■\Ym. A. Poetib, the other nominee, vat classed the other way; but we are sorry to see that ho ha* submitted to the King, and goes Lecompton with the rest of the herd. Mr. Cas eiday, hiß spokesman in the Convention, an nounced that he (Porter) approved Buchanan’s Kansas policy and stood npon the platform of the Convention. The poor devil had to concede that, to obtain the nomination; and now that he has got it, what good will it do him ? The people will identify him with the platform, and administer to him a merited’ defeat. Republic abism is Maibe. —A glance at the result of the town elections in Maine, one of the strongholds of the “Democracy” previous to the Nebraska swindle, discloses the moat remarka ble and complete rerolution that has over found place in onr political history. Of course, every one knows that Maine bos now become one of the strongholds of the Republican party, but i the state of public Bentiment as disclosed in | their late town elections, is a still greater sub- | ject of wonder than was the election of 1856, | when Hamlin carried the State by some twenty two thousand majority. We hare before us a list of towns in those parta of the State formerly good for from four to fire thousand locofoco majority. Tho city of Bath, the third place in the State in point of population, shows but fifty four rotes for the “Democratic” nominee for Mayor. In fact one may say the Republicpn candidate and the full board of Aldermen and Councilmen or the Bnrae party, were elected by acclamation. In Saco, Ihe fourth city in the State in point of population, there was no opposition to the republican candidates for aU offices. In Kennebunk, a great ship-building mart, the Republicans carriod everything. In the large towns of Fryeburg, Stowe, Lowell, Swe den, Windham, Livermore, Gray, Norway, New Gloucester, Baldwin, Bethel, Harrison and Stan disb, and in the smaller ones of Stoneham and Waterford, the Republicans elected every offi cer, with one exception—the clerk in the town of Stowe. Tho “Democrats” carried the town of Albany In the 1 town of Yarmouth, where the Demo; vote always heretoforo was from, whole vole was —-omb_ to have given for himself. We note these remarkable facto as indications of what is passing in New Eng land-premonitory symptoms of the tornado which will begin to blow in New Hampshire on next Tuesday- Inos —These figures show us to how great an extent the Keystone of the confederation is strengthened —bound to her » .Ur States by bands of iron. The census returns of 18n0, which were then considered imperfeot and be low the mark, give ns in this State CC2 first class iron manufacturing establishments, employing Sl9 832,265 —or a fraction short of twenty-mil lions of capital—supplying labor directly to -0,- 675 hands; directly or indirectly feeding and clothing at least a half a million of people, and producing an annual value of $20,650,6j0. The aggregate iron business of all the other States of tho 11 nion combined does not equal that of Pennsylvania alone. But this is but one Uem of the wealth'producing inUrest of our State. The above wo clip from the Port of Saturday. Will that paper tell us how many of its leaders have been devoted to defending a free trade policy, that has no aim but that of putting this great iron State under the feet of foreign pauper labor 1 How much of its space has been devo ted to the task of sending people abroad to buy their iron in England and Wales 1 The facts of the Port are interesting ns data; now let us have the arguments from them. Tun Philadelphia Prat gives the proceedings of the first day of the Democratic Convention, “The State Convention of the Democracy as sembled in the Hall of the House of Representa tives at the State Capitol. From the proceed ings, reported at length in another column, it will be seen that the same game of gagging the will of the majority is to be played out at Har risburg that has been so persistently foUowed at W ¥he°?hairann appointed a committee of “packed” men to favor the Lecompton fraud. This movement was characterised by the able minority with the'condemnation it richly de fed to a prolonged and exciting debate. It was Convention, after this liberal-minded nc tion, concluded it had accomplished enough glory for one day, and adjourned till half-past nine, A. M., tu-day. It remains to be seen whether the policy foreshadowed will meet the approba tion of the people. Mishisota—Lbt mre. Stat Oct.— We heartily concur with the Cleveland Plain Dealer in the following: “Kansas and Minnesota are to be linked to ifelher by the Solons of the Senate, so that the free State can drag in the elave Stata. The adherents of King James fought desperately; but “the first year of American Monarchy” has not yet been graced hy any victories of the King's troops. Loosron-B, ETC.— The question respecting the position of Logstown, on the Ohio, would appear to us to be set at rest by the book from which we mode the quotation a few days since, respecting the Pittsburgh of 1810. The writer says ; “ Eight miles below Middletown wo passed Logstown on our left (as we went down tho rircr.) This is a scattering hamlet of four or fire log cabins, in the neighborhood of which on the opposite side of the riser, a considerable tribo of Indians resided until after the reduction of Fort Du Qaesne, now Pittsburgh, by General Forbes, in 1758." We refer to this because among gentlemen in our city who delight in an tiquarian research, there has been considerable discussion as to the position of Logstown. Our author is quaint and his narrative bears tho un mistakable marks of truth. He met at Crow’s Island, a short distance below Logstown, “two large keel boats loaded with cotton in bales from Nashville, in Tennessee, bound to Pitts • burgh, out tmenty-m daye. They had nine men I each—one steering, six poling and two reeling.’ ' A little further on our author Bays : | “On entering Bearer we refreshed ourselreß toitA oil cents vorth of vhitkey and mater at Gen. Lacook’s tavern. The General it appears was a man of much wit and at the time was a repre resentatire in Hhe Legislature. At this time Bearer had beepjaid out for a town seven years. Cleababd Coubbt.— The Harrisburg corres pondent of tho Philadelphia Bulletin says of one the Washington (Pa.) delegates to the locofoco Convention: “Mr. Hopkins, ofWaahington, addressed the contention in regard to his position. The con vention vhich nominated him passed resolutions against the Kansas policy of-the President, with the knowledge of his sentiments-on the subject He declared in the convention that he would never cast a vote in censure of Mr. Buchanan, either in relation to the Kansas question or any other measure, no spoko at some length in laudation of Mr. Buchanan. He regretted that the Lecompton Constitution had not been sub mitted to the people, but he would sustain Mr. Buchanan in his position. He invoked modera : tion and conciliatory discussion.” One of the leading arguments of the Northern Border Ruffians is, that the people of Kansas can change their Constitution at any time, and hence there is no hardship in forcing the State in under the Lecompton fraud; but the report of the Senate Committee on Territories speaks of that Constitution as “a Constitution urhirh they ! (the people of Kansas) cannot change, without I BESonnsa TO revolution, until the year 18G4.’’ The Senate Committee speaks for the President and the South ; and any attempt to encourage a counter opinion is as base a fraud as the Le compton Swindle itself. Hunt’s Merchants’ Magazine.— The March Number of this valuable work comes to us, hal lowed as it were by the touch of death. It is the 225 number of this work, making a period of more than seventeen years since its foundation. The head that planned and the untiring band that executed so much valuable labor as has been compressed within the Merchants' Maga -1 line in that period, are still and cold, t reeman Hunt is no more. Wo hope that those other hands which have labored with Mr. Hunt, so long in this work, will now uphold in full strength, and vigor what he so well commenced, and so vigorously carried on for so long a time. Doubtless tho book will still bear his name, and be sustained by the pub lic os heretofore. Tub Bblle of Wasuikqtos.— This is a “Tale of the Affections” by Mrs. N. P. Lasallo of Wash ington. We have read one chapter ia this book which is folly equal to the average of its class. The Boston Journal gires ah account of a man, who, haring got decidedly the worst of a fight which he provoked, at the close of the bu siness expressed himself ‘‘sorry for what had happened.” The fellow's condition was no doubt as sincere ns that of a Smith Carolina Congress man, under similntcireamstances. “Is Tht Seevaht a Doo 1" oaks the Blooms hura Star, In discussing the project to break up Judge Wilmot’s judicial district.
