WAflnntaTos > ThurstUfo Feb. 26,3858.—The
, notable *vent of the day is the rejection by:the

they, at least, desired the army increased for
service in Kansas, nthertbanln Utah; and Indi-'

carry out theirtyrannicblbidding., Volunteers
would be too fresh from the people, and too little

so stupendous a fraud upon the liberties of Kan

“Some month* ainco a man, Bea. Jackson by

High Hill, with a view to look after the estate of
the murdered man. On inquiry the following
fads appeared: Jaekaon, eo it was alleged, bad
committed some indiscretion toward the daugh

called upon the merchant for satisfaction. This
was declined; when the enraged father caught
Jackson in bis own store by the hair of his head,
drew him across the counter, and with a huge
knife: »<vertd hit head from hit body. The old man
was arrested, tried and acquitted. The ground
of his discharge was, that the murder was com

Queer Case or Incbndiabisk.— The people of
Hudson, Ohio, were last week greatly excitedby
the discoveryof an elaborate preparation made
by a.citizen in fair standing, to burn his busi
ness establishment, a boot and shoe store. The
house was so situated that if the fire had broken
out, the destruction of property, perhaps of life,
would have been dreadful. Combustibles were
arranged through the house so that thorough
conflagration would hare been almost instantan
eous. A man in his employ had watched him
and observed his strange proceedings, and caused
his arrest—He had been making ready for the
“ re {o f T two years. When arrested he confesed
all, abed tears and said: “I hadn’t the heart to
■ do it. This has come upon me one day to soon.—
To-day all these things should have been re
moved. I never should have done it" His house
was insured for more than it was worth.
Washington, Feb. 26.— Prentice, of the Louis

said, to get the Southern Americans to stand
with Hon. Humphrey Marahall, of Kentucky,
and Hon. H. Winter Davis, of Maryland, against
the admission of Kansas Into the Union as a
State under the Lecompton Constitution. The
one argument they make, which is all-powerful
in its appeal for justice to fair-judging minds,
is that the Legislature of Kansas, which the
Li comptonltes say can call another Convention
to alter and amend the Constitution at any time
af er the admission, by solemn joint resolution,
passed by an almost unanimous vote, and pre
sented to Congress, has protested against tho

rights as free men and citizens of tho United
