nod the trickery displayed io there management
Biots, disorder and personal rencontres prevail
on every occasion on which the, are convened.
Tbe truth of these assertions is sustained by
leading and respectable journals, published in
the ciiv.of Philadelphia, as well as by independ
ent journals of the seme locality. The Isle Con
vention, however, seems to have taken a step
deeper in degradation, than any of ila predeces
sors if we may be allowed to form an opinion
from disinterested, and at the same time accu
rate reports of its proceedings. It appears lha
there was a conceded majority in the *te Con
vention against what Cob Forney tn the F" rr,
terms “the I.ecompton Swindle, hut the hang
era-on of the administration, conscious of the
weakness of their cause, and very-deslrious of
serving their corrupt masters, bv*st<me hocus
pocus, succeeded in securing th^ehairmanship.
The gentlomsn who was honored wilb that posi
tion was Thomas Forsythe, late Canal Commis
sioner, and at present an oEce-holder in tho
Custom House under Collector Baker. Forsythe
is nn old politician, who has been schooled in
parliamentary tricks by some ten years service
in both-branches of the Pennsylvania Legisla
ture, so that the selection.as far as the Lecomp
tonitta were concerned, was very favorable. In
the course of the proceedings it soon became
evident that the Chairman was determined to
make the most of the opportunity which hts
position-afforded him. Resolutions were offered
by some tool of the Custom House, lauding the
administration in the most fulsome terms of
adulation, and advocating the immediate admis
sion of Kansas under the Lecompton Constitu
uon. as recommended by the President. It is
said by the leading journals of Philadelphia, of
all parlies, that the President of the Convention
actually declared them to be adopted, without
even submitting them to a vote,-a fair specimen
of the manner in which “pnblic opinion" is man
ufactured iu the great city a! the eastern end o
lb. Commonwealth. The Free. protests sga.net

For tlie Uazetle
Mb. Bbapfobd'h lecture of
n eT a B Bradford was delivered, according
touppoinunent, in Excelsior Hall. Allegheny »n
Lost Thursday evening, 10 a crowded houBC ' on “
we do not remember to have »een an audionco
evince closer attention or a higher appreciation
of a public lecture. Mr. Bradford is a maß or
talent and fine attainments and he fully
Uined hie high reputation in this lecture oni The
Philosophy of Reform.- The lecturer sketched
with a mater hand the prevalence of cnme of
various phases, throughout our land, and ‘he
general demoralised condition of society, com
mercially, politically and ecclesiastically. The
several public agencies, the most prominent be
ing the P church, Organiied for combating Iheae
vices were then presented and explained; and
finally what embraced the main portion of the
lecture, the prominent impediments that stand
in the way of these agencies effecting the bene
cent ends of their orgunuation. This subject “
with Mr B. not a mere lifeless thing, but one
lhat haa, for years, enlisted his warmest sympa
thies and noblest efforts, as his public life shows,
and it -is treated, in his lecture, with a breadth
of statement and a power of illustration that has
been rarely equalled in this or any other city.
Mr B. is a bold, earnest roan. He has no
faith in the doctrine of expediency that makes
compromises with sin. The oppressor and his
apologist—those who invent false morality and
false religion, to etond in ihe way of progres.
or the elevation of any portion of the human
race lie treats with a scathing severity that
makes the blood tingle, no doubt disturbing ihe
equanimity of conservatism, but promotive of the
moral health, nevertheless. .
But my übiect is to suggest ibe propriety of
haring Ibe lecture repealed on this side of ibe
river. Cannot the Lecture Committee el our
Young Men's Library Association, who hare
herotoforo made praiseworthy efforts for our
instruction, undertuke this ■ rbcy could do tbe
Dttblic no beitcr service. Although Mr. B. does
not adopt lecturing as a money-making profes
sion we doubt not thallie would consent to visit
Pittsburgh on terms that the Committee could
readily embrace. There is scarcely
hoard the lecture but would go to hear it re
pealed, and bring one or two urybis neighbors
