at the junction of the Ohio and Upper Mississip

An English company, many years ngo, laid
out this place, bdl becoming embarrassed In their
operatious (he scheme failed. While in this con
dition, a New York company purchased the title
and are the preseut owners. Although it is
generally, supposed the title is defective, still a
large number of lots have been sold and houses
built thereon.
Three or four years ago, the lUnioin »
Itailrond wua completed lo lids point. This com
pany Ims built a subslaiil ial levee of about six
tceu feet high and over sixty feet w-ide. Thia
lt-vec girdles the whole town. The nuihorilieV
arc constructing a gradual slope from the top of
the levee to ihe water's edge, and grading with
limcslome. When completed, if will be quite

inside of this levee, ou the Ohio river frc.nl, a
large number of brick and frame bouses. Among
the number are nine brick store-houses, three
