, Pxxxstlyabia Railwat. —The Eleventh An
nual Report of this Company was made at a
meeting held in Philadelphia on the 30th ultimo.
It is an exceedingly voluminous document, but
the'principal facts in it of public interest may
be presented in a narrow space.
The Treasurer’s Report shows a balanoe in
A£~lhfl Company amounting to 51,100,-
, 0& i irTiiiiiiiiiifiiii inn i
aeml of 8 per cent, upon the captuuorThTSSS"
pany. The report continues: ';
If we place to tho’'contingent and'renewal
fund” $175,677, there would still remain a net
profit of $924,473 95, which is equivalent to a
dividend of seven per cent, upon the present cap
ital of the company. The whole number of pas
sengers conveyed during the year between Har
risburg and Pittsburgh is equivalent to 143.C13
passing over the whole length of the road, show
ing a decrease, os compared with 1856, of 5,040
passengers, and a decrease in receipts for first
class passengers of $9,735, and for emigrants
$1,396. * . * * * * *
Respecting the purchase of tho Main Liue the
Report says: The price required to be paid for
the works was $7,600,000, in the bonds of this
company, bearing five per cent, interest, the
State relinquishing her reserved right to pur
chase the Pennsylvania Railroad. Of these
bonds, $lOO,OOO are payable on the 31st day of
July, 1858, and $lOO,OOO annually thereafter
until July 31st, 1890, when the payments will
be at the rale of $1,000,000 per annum until the
whole amount is paid, excepting the last pay
ment falling dae July 31, 1894, amounting to
$300,000. The terms of the bill of sale have
been folly complied with, and the bonds of the
company for the amounts required delivered to
the Treasurer of the State.
The gross earnings of the road for freight,
during tho year, were $3,876,510 20; being an
increase over the year 1856 of $132,283 69.
The through business amounted to 172,072 tons,
and the local, including coal, to 358,347 tons—
an increase of 0,910 on the through, and 09,418
on the local tonnage. The aggregate tonnage
for the year was 530,420 tons, in whloh is in
cluded 200,392 tons of gas and other coals, car
ried in the cars of the company. In addition to
this there were 290,297 tons of freight trans
ported in the cars of individuals, of which 97,619
tons of eoal wore delivered in Piu *hurgh.
The road employs, or has ready far use, 210
locomotives, 64 wide and 14 narrow passenger
cars, 81 emigrant and. 27 baggage cars, 188 stock
cars, 1373 cars for general merchandize, 292
lumber cam and 92 coal cars.
The whole report, considering the financial
storm through which the country has passed, is
highly satisfactory.
Sisatob Tazswbll, of Virginia, now an in
firm man of 80 years, is so wealthy, it is said,
that he once forgot for twenty years that he had
$40,000 on. deposit in a certain bank, drawing
no interest.
