LonJuo Times, Joauarj 8 ) Gejjeeal ITavelock.—The death of General Sir Henry Havelock is a national misfortune. Major-General‘.Sir Henry TTavelock, Bart K. C. B. t was a native of Bishopswearmoutb, near Sunderland, where he was born on the Glh of April, 1795 His father was the decendant and representative of a family which long had resi ded in the neighborhood of Great Grimsby, Lin colnshire. The Charter-house is the school to which be longs the credit—and no small credit it is—of having reared the youth of Sir Henry Havelock. While Henry Havelock was al.the Charter-hoase a change came over his father’s fortunes. Mr. Havelock was obliged to parL with his estate at Ingress, and, what perhaps seemed worseforluno still at the moment, (o withdraw his son from I the Charter-house school. Ingress-park was sold to the Government, and the youth was en tered os a student at the Middle Temple, where we are told be attended the lectures #f Chitty, the'famous pleadcr,_ftod formed an intimate friendship with the late Judge Talfonrd. Have lock, however, was not moulded by nature for a lawyer; on in-door life did not suit his tastes; he pined for ft life of notion aod of enterprise. An opportunity soou offered for another and a more agreeable change. His elder brother William (who subsequently I fell glorionsly at the head of his regiment, the j Nth light dragoons, in the desperate but victo- - rio h charge ouTLe Sikhs at Uammiggcr Nov. i 22, 1848) gained some distinction in the Penin- I sola. This gallant youth, who is mentioned in j tho despatches, as even then “one of the most chivalrous officers in the service,” was wounded at the battle of Waterloo, where he served os aid-de-camp to Baron. AUcn. He fortunately possessed sufficient influence and interest to ob tain a commission for his brother Henry, and a few weekß after Waterloo was fought be had i the satisfaction of seeing him gazetted to a sec ond lieutenancy in the rifle brigade. This piece of good fortune, however, was accompanied by one main drawback—the great European war was at an end, and with it humanly speaking, was gone all chance of active military employ ment. For eight years, Havelock, as a subal tern, was obliged to live a life of military rou tine at home, in England, Scotland and Ireland. At length, in 182::, the opportunityoccurrred to him of effecting nu exchange into the Ntli light infantry, a regiment under orders for In dian service, navclock eagerly seized the op portunity, and landed in Calcutta toward the close of that year* In 1824, tho first Burmese war broke out, Ilaveloek served in the Barmese campaign as Deputy Assistant Adjutant-General to the forces under Bir Archibald Campbell, and was present at the actions of Napadee, Putna goa and Paghan. On the conclusion of the war he was associated with Captain Lumsdcn and Dr. lvnox, in a mission to the Court of Ava. and had on audience of the “Golden Foot," when the treaty of-Yandaboo was signed. In 1827 he published a short account of the Burmese campaign, which at the time excited some atten tion by the originality of its remarks and the freedom of the author's comments on the events of the war. In the same year he was appointed by Lord Combermcro to tho post of adjutant to the mili tary depot at Ohinsurah, on the breaking up of which he returned to bis regiment. Not long afterward he visited Calcutta, and, having passed the examination in languages at Fort William, was appointed ndjutantof his regiment by Lord William Bentinck. The corps at that time was under the command of Colonel (afterward Gen eral Sir) Robert Sale. In 18SS, after 22 year« of service as a subaltern, Henry Havelock was promoted to a company, and attended Sir Wil loughby Cml tou as one of his staff in.the invasion of Afghanistan. He served through the Aff ghanistan campaign with increased distinction, and was present with Bir John Keane at the storming of Ghuznee, in 1838 After a short leave of au-ence, Havvtwk was sent to the Punjab ia charge Of a detnehun-ui, and was placed on the staff of Gen. Elphinstune as Persian interpreter. We next find him serv ing in Oabul under Sir Robert Sale, and present at the forcing of the Klioord Cabul Pass, the action of Tezeen, and all the other engagements of that force till it reached Jellalahad. In con junction with Lis friends Major Macgregor and Captain Rmdfoot, he had under Sale, tho Chief, direction of the memorable defence of that place and wrote all the dispatches relating to it, which were highly praised by the.lale Sir Geo. Murray. Fur liis services iu Cabal he obtained his brevet majority, and was made a Companion of the Bath • ... . PITTSBURGH: WEDNESDAY MORNING, JAN, 27; 1658. The Election. We hare retur.nsfrom the two cities ami a few adjoining*districts. In these, Mr. Scott has 3‘J'J majority, and Wilmot had, in the same districts lost fall, 600, which shows that be is runniog pretty well up with Ifilmot. He is undoubtedly elected by from 200 to 600 majority, unless the country districts bare done very badly. The vote, it will be seen, is extremely light. We think thero is no danger in claiming the eleetionof tho Republican candidate. No Backisq.Dowh. —Lots of stories como and go in all directions to ibe effect that Mr. Bu chanan has changed his plan in reference to “Leoomptonthat there is a split in the Cab* inet in reference to this same elegant document, etc., etc. This is all idle talk. Bo those who circulate and believe these stories happen to remember that each one of the Cabinet officers is openly and folly committed on this subject before the people, by their voluminous letters to the Philadelphia meeting 1 Brown has since written a letter to tho New York Herald, taking Bennett to task for daring to insinuate that there was any change in sentiment touchingTe complon, and declaring-the question already settled and the Constitution as good os adopted; already made a test of orthodoxy. V \Oa the other hand, we are informed by a gen tleman who has conversed with Senator Douglas within a week past, that he is eager and ready for the battle; that he is bent upon his coarse .-and will eland to his own views of Lecompton to the last. Davis is inspired with the spleen of fifty dragons against him, and has been sim mering down iiis gall to get it to the right de gree of bitterness. It is thought that by the lime Mr. Buchanan shall send in the Concilia tion—say Friday—that Senator Brown will have sufficiently recovered from his vertigo to look ■ the whole question in the face. Judge Black is at his desk ready to give legal opinions ad libi tum, and the Court .equally ready to endorse them when given. The machinery is all ready; Calhoun, regent of Kansas, is on his way to Washington with his own’batch of clectioo re-, turns. We may safely adopt the language of - the Almanacs with reference to the next wcok or fortnight, writing opposite the days now near: expect—squalls—about—these—limes. “AppttEnßHurßsox.” —The people of Kan sas havo* a famous facility of giving names.— They have dubbed James Buchanan, “Muggins,” and “Specky” Henderson, late of Washington, Pa., has received the cognomen of “Appre hmderson,” from the fact of his beginning every speech he made by squeaking through his nose. “Mr. President, I apprehend, &c.” He has at last been “apprehended” indeed, and is now in the hands of the Philistines. lie was seized on account of frauds him on the elective franchise. It seems'that he was sent by the regeht Calhoun to fetch the vote of the Kaw Reserve (where there are no voters by the way) to Lecompton. Thirty men had been at the £aw Reserve, however, from Westport, and voted tho pro-slavery ticket. Finding that more voles would be needed, the Border Ruffians sent Jack Henderson down for the returns. Jack ac cordingly went after them, and, although he started with only thirty votes, by the time the returns reached Lecompton the vote stood [at upward of five hundred —a number sufficient to save the “Democracy" of Leavenworth county and the country generally—the increase having been mode, as the lawyers would say, in traji*iiv. The Free Stale men of Leavenworth bunted up the jadges of election at the Delaware crossing, got sundry affidavits from them to the effect that 30 votes only were cast, and that the returns showed said fact l : and, having secured these preliminaries, the next tiling was to secure “Apprebenderson.” Having thus done bis duty, our hero started for Washington, bnt was spirited from the stage coach .soon after he set out and is now, or was at latest dates, in durance vile at Lawrence. For his services in securing the Lecompton swindle just as it is, he has obtained the post of mail-route agent for Kansas. Besides a good salary, this position affords a fine opportunity for speculation to a man of such unmistakable genius as “Apprehenderson.” Tub Motements of the Leaders. —lt is said that Governor Wise of Virginia is preparing.a letter exposing the treachery and criminal con duct of the Administration towards Kansas.
