RIDDLE & Co., SVITORS and PROPRIETORS. PITTSBURGH: THURSDAY HORNING, JAN REPUBLICAN NOMINA TION FOR ASSEMBLY. JOHN SCOTT, of Boss To-wjufaip. Election, Tuesday, January 26th. Now where is the enormous deScit aboTo made? Let us exjunioo this point. Take the free states and balance their Post Office account. The whole expense of tho deportment in the sixteen free Slates $ 5,035,2Ju The Receipts, 4,ViO,V»t Dehcit fto/.uti In this account we bare of course included lotra, Wisconsin and all those new and sparsely settled states of the North-west. Turning to tho Post offico account of tho Slave States, we And the expenditures,... $3,754,476 And the Receipts, VT. 1,600,034 Defloit, „ S 2,18-1,*142 The discrepancy observable between tho sums of the deficits above noted and the whole deficit of the department as above, is produced by our leaving out the deficit in the Territories to which our calculation does not extend. The fact is then patent from tho abovo that, the ac cost* of the Post Office Department in the sixteen free states very nearly balance. For the sake of tho contrast we present a few of the Free and Slave States sido by side. Massachusetts: receipts... “ Expenses. Arkansas: receipts - “ - Expenses Pennsylvania: receipts... “ Expenses. Virginia: receipts ~ “ Expenses New York: receipts “ Expenses- ... .Rhode Island: receipts... *) “ Expenses Florida: receipts... “ Expenses Thus we might go on. A review of tjie account shows that Delaware.is the only slave .State that contributes, even in a remote degree, as much money to tbo Post Offico Department as it with draws. Of the free States, Maine, Vermont, New Jersey, lowa, Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio and Illi nois aro pach a littlo in arrears. It takes all the money made out of tbo department in Massachu setts and Pennsylvania to pay up the deficit of that poor unfortunate State of Arkansas, one of the waate places of Slavery, where there are nearly as- many white men to a square mile as there are school-bonecs to a square mile in ('on necticut. Yet it is from Arkansas, Florida. Mis sissippi, and States in their poor condition, that : come most of the complaints and threats of a i dissolution of the Union, and of a crusade against J the free States, whence comes the money hy J which what little light they get from the world '■ around, is disseminated. We have no disposition J to complain of this unequal distribution of the J burdens of the government, and wouU-not ailude to them bat that these poor States arc constant ly thrusting the story of their superiority in our teeth. . Tux Supreme CornT of Illinois on Slavlbv. —The Supreme Court .of Illinois has lately been called on to render a decision of some import ance. A slave holder of Missouri sued the Illi nois Central Railroad for the value of a slave who was permitted to ride in their cars from Cairo to Chicago.' Tbo opinion of the Court is, in effect, than he constitution and laws of Illinois recognize all men within the Slate as fr,-t men ; that slavery is an institution of mere locallaw in tho States where it exists, which local law extends to no other State; that tbo law of Missouri under which the alleged slave is claimed by the plaintiff has no force whatever in the State of Illinois, but. is “repugnant to our laws;” and that, therefore, tho plaintiff “under the law of Illinois, has no property in the fugitive, and can here, under Stale authority, assert no property in or author ity over him.” j Tiie Court further gives the opinion than he case is ono that comes unde^^gMirisdiciioz^^ the Federal Cmijti eases—and concludes persons being repugnant too'ur lairs and the genius of our State institutions, our courts willnot enforce, as agencral rule, the laws of other Stalos recognizing this species of prop erty where the cause of action, based upon such lairs, arises in this.i3tatc.” This is a happy contrast to the decision of the 0. S. in the Dred Scott case, and is another as sertion of tho Stoto Rights doctrine. Coming from Illinois it is encouraging that the effort of the Federal power to subdue the Slates to its au thority will not bo successful. The Age or Miracles Returned - By a perusal of the following,, which seems to hare . . been published in sober earnest, it will be seen that some priests from this neighborhood have been working miracles in Brooklyn, N. V. Comment upon such blasphemous pretentions is hardly necessary: •'The Rev. Father Gaudentius Rossi, assisted by the Rer. Fathers Anthony Calandri and Luke BaudinelU, all belonging to the Passionist Mon astery of Blessed Paul of the Cross, Birming ham, Fa., hare for several weeks been giving missions with marvelous success aod effect in different parishes of the Dibceso of Brooklyn. These holy and self-denying missionaries gave their first mission at St. Joseph’s Church, lied- : ford, in tho bounds of Brooklyn city. ! “The religious interest excited by this first mission was of tho most remarkable character. The pharch was thronged at every servico; more than five thousand went to communion, and at the 01030 of tho miasiojj, some twelve or fifteen non-Catholioi,Bomo of,them parsons of superior education, were received into the Church. In the course cf this mission, it is asserted on reliable authority, that God teas pleased to manifest hit favor by special graces of an external character. The rumor, tome say, vent abroad among the humble who mostly compose the parish, that bodily diseases were cured by some of these missionaries. The blind , the lame, the afflicted with various chronic diseases, were brought to the church vi -great num bers. sensation created by.this movement among those unprepared by their education for such 'signs following them that believe,' was inteaso. Father Guadentios blessed those that oomrto him with the relies of the holy founder of his order, Blessed Paul of the Cross, and in some cases cures were effected on the instant. Others were popularly reported, bat not attested as to be cited hero. A pbysioian of Brooklyn was one of the number converted by the graces bestowed in this mission.” ' I ’ Tkx Portland Advertiser shows by offioinl statistics that during the last fiscal year Maine actually built well nigh doable the amount of . shlppiogt in tonnage, of any other State in the ' Union- Maine, indeed, is the great ship-build ing Stale. German Literature has for some time been gradually mnking its way iu England and into this country. Till the last few years, however, it has not been at all appreciated. It is no easy matter to enter fully into the spirit oPany for eign language, and of all modern tongues Ger man is avowedly the most difficult. Its litera ture has been much abused because little under stood, and a great deal of nonsense has been spoken and written on the subject. The Ger man alone, of all nations, understand and appre ciate oar literature. They have spared no pains to becomo thoroughly acquainted with it. Their translations of Shakspeore ore admirable ; their commentaries superior to our own. ■ True, to become masters of our language is for them n less difficult task than it is for us to acquire a knowledge of theirs; but this circumstance fur nishes no excuse for hasty and prejudiced judg ments. At the present day so much truly valu able thought is locked up in the German tongue that the scholar will not regret-any labor neces sary to gain possession of it.
