This partisan effort in regard to cdo - cation is unworthy of Mr. Bncknlew'e reputation and talent. Tho death of your late representative was ap propriately announced in both houses to-day. The speech of Dr. Gatzam, in the Senate, was full of feeling, and indeed rose to the dignity of eloquence; for however small the doctor may bo tn person he has a largo heart. In the House, Mr. Voeghtley announced tho fact, and offered tho usual resolutions of condo lence. Mr. Foster also paid a tribute to the de ceased in fitting terms. Mr. Strothers, of War ren, pronounced a very .fitting eulogy upon the deceased, and Mr. Calhoun spoko a few words of commendation. . , g.- - ADd *»*. The following nre the resolutions offered by every Mr. Voeghtley and tho remarks elicited from other gentlemen: Resolved. Thai the members of (he House have OP'DIPh. heard with sorrow of the death of J. B. Back norsr, Esq., a member elect from the county of Allegheny. • Resolved, That* a committee of three be ap pointed to communicate to. the relatives and fnends of the deceased the respectful condolence: of the members of this Houscj and to express I their deepsense of theloss thothasbeen sustained by his death. v I of Allegheny, in seconding tHe i resolutions of his colleague, observed that he 1 cordially endorsed the remarks of that gentleman l in presenting them. Although he had not the pleasure of so intimate an acquaintance with the deceased as manymembersofthisbody, he knew mm as a man of great kindness of heart, urban ity of manner,- and irreproachable character endearing him to hia constituents and to aIL Althoogh not gifted as a speaker, he was always at hw-post, and proved himself a faithful public servant and an honest man. Mr. Struthxbs said: Mr. Speaker—As one of those who had the pleasure of associating with Mr. Backhouse, os a member of the last Legislature, I cannot re train from embracing the opportunity afforded •by this painful announcement, of expressing tho sentiments of high respect and esteem inspired in the breasts of bis-fellow members—l think I may speak for all—by his gentlemanly bearing upon this floor, and in society, during the seß sjon. Always in his seat he gave constant atten tion to tho business of the House, both ol public and private character. Whilst he was ardent in his altnehment to the interests of his immediate constituents he was courteous lowards those who sometimes differed will, him in opinion: and in P T, SI -?. thoSe . irUGr ests efficiently, ho aroused no unkind feelings and made no enemies. Atthe last session we buried a grave and most honored Senator—one who had grown grey in the public service, and attained a high reputa lion as a statesman and public man.—We also buried one of Lhe youngest and most active mem bers of this House—one before whom a bright course of usefulness was just opening. Theso were striking instances of the uncertain tenure by which we hold our places, not only in these Halls, but on the stage of life. And the decease of our friend, whose death is now announced,' admonishes ns with no less impressivo signifi cance, “be ye also ready!” The resolutions were then unanimously adou ted; and ' v The Speaker appointed Messrs. Voeghtley, Jenkins and Strothers the committee provided for in the second resolution. ' PITTSBTTRGH: •SATURDAY MOBNIKGy JAN. 9,186 b KfiaejpßMOAJN; nominations. AtLßOffßXT— Blectio>', Tuesday, Jan. 12. - MAYOR, James Miller, . Director of Poor—A. DAVrDSON, FOR ASSEMBLY, JOHN SCOTT, of Ross Township. The Bible is the Public Schools.—Tie Pittsburgh Catholic, quoting from a piese of would-be wit which’appeared in Harper's Month ly for January, in which the mistakes'of chil dren in reading from Holy Writ, are conspicn oosly paraded to ertort a laugh. from “funny " people, prefaces its qnotaUon with the following: “The advocates of the publio school -system deemed it proper for the success of their plans to raise the cry of “the Bible in danger.”— They denounced Catholics for not favoring its use as on ordinary school book; and they liber ally distributed it among their classes, to serve for oycrcises in reading, Jto. The consequences wnich every man of common sense most have foreseen, are manifesting themselves. Even the great publishing house of bigotry is constrained against the irreverence gener ated by the Bible in the school.’ ” The Catholic urges the quotation from Harper as an evidence that Protestants are “coming round” to the views of Papists In the matter of the reading of the Bible by children in sohoois. Th “J«.:VJiatHorper’eMagaiinesays: i; , .' ' * * Bntwe have deeided objections to its use as a reading book in tho clnssTor ns a volome from which the boys and girls are to ” blunders of boobies, os they are teaming to read or tooonj ugato, ehould be made ZFtOH it” “° red lhm u ‘ oao »bich are hal lowed with tho words of Jesus and the story of His cross.” * We' have no idea that the editor of Harper thoaght that his “logic” wonld be so speedily adduced by Papacy as an argument against the use of the Scriptures in schools. Probably he intended only to be funny, and by a few general" remarks...to..whet the general appetite for the “brave” hnecdote of the boy who read —'‘And the wind ceased and there was a great clam,” or this which wc take from the editor’s drawer as quoted by The Catholic .- At a private school in Guilford, Conn the scholars yvero reading the Bible in class, whon one of them came upon that beautiful passage • —■ls there no balm in Gilead, is there no pbv sioian there!’ The little fellow boggled over it a moment, and then sung out, -Is there no 4cmin Guilford'. Is there no physickin thore.” But what does all this prove in the argument against the use if tho Bible in the publio schools?. .Carried' out legitimately, would it not exclude-the use of any books whatever in the school ? What child is there who does not make ludicrous blunders every day while learning to read ? Or in the affairs of lire, in the learning of a trade or an art, should every blunder be used as an argument against the art or handi craft itselT7 what would the world come to at iast ? Nay. more; if the use of the Bible had been prohibited in the chnrch because priests made havoo of the text in intoning it, the Holy Scriptures had long since been laid aside there also. It would seem to any careful thinker that the fact of numerous blunders among readers of any book would be a very good argument for a a.oro careful amt frequent-perusal of that book, be it what it may. We can see no force in the argnment from Harper, and no ground for the congratulation of the Catholic, that tho Protest- l f ant world is “coming round” to its view of the matter. When the Bible shall have been ex pelled from the public schools we may expect a gradual return to those ages when the Inquisi tion was held a very wholesome institution an-l Friar Tack a very worthy priest. Theitwo marked features of the proceedings were the presenta tion of bills in the Senate and the offering of resolutions in the House, to require the State Treasurer to report where the money of the Slate is deposited; in other words, to cause him to disclose whether he has used any of the money for improper purposes, or' in speculation, or loaned!! to brokers. This resolution came from, a democrat from Philadelphia county by'tbe name of Dohnert. He is the friend of John J. Now is moment to turn our ojes"to the post, reading there the truth rul lossoDir'of-, ex pcrience; and to Ibo faturo, iavesting itwith that cheerful light which hope is wont to Shed. The Female Bible Society of Pittsburgh has its' .history. A generation of the race has passed to its final account since a little band of Chris tian women established the organization which it is now our privilege and honor to sustain. The original members.have nearly all gone to, their rest—a sweet repose, as we trust, ia Christ, alter “life s fitful fever”—and we cannot doubt that the work of love in which they and their 8^ c ,^?f Te heen engaged, and the prayers of faith which they have offered up, have been instrumental in bringing light and knowledge to many darkened and ignorant souls. Earnest purpose and pious energy marked the operations or this Society in its earlier day, for Christian hearts moulded its character and directed its destiny. And we beHeve it has been sustained through outtbayears by thesame spirit. Christistheaame: yesterday, to-day, and fitever; and the blessed fruits of a confiding faith in him must evermoro be the some. Wo soy without boasting, our as sociation has done a good work- It has con tributed thousands of dollars to the funds of the parent society and to the extent of its ability has supplied the destitute in our own midst with oraclca of God “that moke wise unto sal .Tation," ■ . Woman owes much lo thc Bible, and ilia p - cullarly fit that she should become instrumental m spreading its truths abroad—truths which by their influences on the great heart of humanity assure to her, her true position in Ui© social fabric. But there are other aud higher motives to ac tuato her in the work of disseminating the in spired word of God., This blessed book unfolds the plan of salvation for all who believe—tor rich and poor, for- bond and free, for malo and female. We'cannot love it too much. No mor can love it too much. No earth-pilgrim can find entrance to the gates of tho celestial city unless this book has been his guide. Without this legacy of God’s love to his children there might bo no pure church, no missions, no Sab bath holy to him, no fhmily altar, no prayer, no civilization, no “peace in earth, no good will to man.” \et wo feel that we have not done our whole duty to this cause. Onr laxity has too often been apparent Inthemeagro returns to our treas ury. Our efforts have 100 often assumed the form of dull routine. Let us accompany tbc work of our hands with the prayer of our hearts, that fervent supplicating prayer of faith which never Shall fall to bring a blessing. Let ua enter our faturo labors with moredependancc on our Divine Master, mingling our • offerings with earnest pleadings that God would stir up tho hearts or many to give liberally to the Biblo cause, and of many to “search tbe'Scripfures” that therein they may findeternallife. i J ‘ vo - V' AXK -—Witl lecture in Erie on Mon day evraiug.
