fully report, that having met and paid a visit to
the City Library, now under the control of the
"Young Men's Christian Association of the City
of Allegheny," were gratified to find the appear
ance and condition of said library much improv-
ed. The arrangement for the accommodation
of visitors, or those wishing to partake of its
lienelita;nro . _good.- The rooms are clean and
carefully kept, presenting an air of neatness and
comfort sufficient to induce a person to become
a member, or at least to spend a few hours with
pleasure and profit to themselves, thereby assist
,
ing to Increase its usefulness and encouraging
those now having the ,care and control of: it.—

According to a resolution of Councils adopted
April 14th; 1857, whereby the sum of fifty dol
lars per 'annum was appropriated to the support
of the City Library, we hesewith present a bill.

The librarian - of the Anderson Library reports
to the Libra" Committee that since the Library
has been - under his snmeillance, (September 31,
18570 three hundred and fourteen volumes have
been taken. out.. There are now' seventy-six
readers, and llte namber.-Iturreasing.every eve
ning.- -There are more than double the number
of apprentice.; who are regular readers than under
the fortner,ailmbil tration.- -After examination,
it is foundihat there are more-than one hundred.

Charles Wedley, was_ imprisoned in New Or
loans lately, in default of payment of a fine for
some misdemeanor committed in that city, and,
'by the 'operation of one of the laws in that State
regulating ' , the peculiar institution," was about
to be sold into slavery, ;Information of this
tact was communicated to Mayor Weaver, by the
friends of Wedley here, dud affidavits were pro
cured setting forth that h 6 was a free man, &c.,
strut forwarded to the Mayor of Now Orleans,
and asking that he be liberated. Yesterday our
Mayor received a letter from J. B. Walton, Sec
retary of the Mayoralty of the latter city, ac
' kuowledging the receipt of the affidavits, and
stating that Wedley had been released, and had
I.been ordered to leave the State within GO days.

recently' received a letter, dated New Orleans,
from R. E. Walker, who states that he *es ap
pointed executor's! the estate of Baker Wood
ruff, of Louisiana; lately deceased, who by his.
will liberated all his slaves, numbering about

conveyed to Pennsylvania, and provision made
for them for one year. Mr. Walker writes that
Pittsburgh will probably be the destination of
these - people, and inquires whether there is any
provision in the laws prohibiting the importa
tion of free colored persons to this State, or if
there would be any objection raised by the chi.

Mayor Weaver, of course, forwarded a reply
that will be satisfactory.
