Tuckermau, who, a ed s Treasurer of the Eastern Railroad, defraud that. corporation of about a quarter of a mill m ion of dollars, was in ;mil in hew Haven for ail robbery, took the community somewhat by our ' prise. It Was but a few days ago that the ex ception, to his conviction in then , uni eipal Court on the charge of embezzlem wer ar gued. lien. Haas Choate appearing in his behalf. For a number of months back, the Post Office Department has been cognizant of a systematic robbery of the malls. They were generally dis tant mails, such as New Orleans, Galveston, Chi cago, &c., which rendered the task of detection extremely difficult. About the fourteenth of November a Philadelphia mail was robbed of a large amount of notes and drafts, and probably money also. Within a day or two, it was an , nottnced that the mail from Cuba for the State of Maine by the steamer of the 16th inst.; con ', taking about 600 letters, and which ha been i duly forwarded from New York, was no d t to be [ found, It havingbeenebetracted on thermals be tween New Yorkand Boston. It iz oleo elated that the mail which left Boston on Sunday, tbe 22d of November, by the New Haven mail route, coutalning o. large amount of drafts andletters from Maine and this city, was also abstrcted, together—with, it le supposed, a consid a erable =aunt of money, how large is not known. I, For some time, the well-known specialtrack mail agent, Mr. Hxdbroole, has been upon the 1 of the robber, grad dally. narrowing the field of \ hie operations, unmet last, according to a tele graphic dispatch received from him, he has as pounced upon the culprit, against whom, 'says, the proof is positive, added to whicti, ac cording to the account from Springfield, is his wen confection, It appears that the suspicions of the pest. office officials have been turned to Mr. Tucker man for several weeks or more, and that in con ,sequence be has beets closely watched. It was found. that 'he woo in the habit of going to and from New York in the New Haven mail train!, especially on Sunday night, when no mall agent accompanied the bags. He has—if the accusa tions against him are eorreet—committed his depredations once too often, and was caught in the toils. - Mr Tuckerman will be examined at New Haven to-day, when a full development of all the facts in the case will probably be made. If the etatements in regard to the extent of the robberies are correct, ban d cbe brought home to Mr. Tuckerman, wi be liable to a life sentetMe of imprisonment. Sprineild, Soo. 30.—W. S. Tuckerman, for merly Treasurer of the Eastern Railroad at Boston, was arrested last night at New Haven, for robbing the mail. The evidence was conclu sive, and it is understood that he confesses his guilt. lie has been in the habit of taking the Sunday niget Boston train from New York ear tying with hitea large trunk empty, with the exception of a carpet bag filled with clock weights. to make it appear heavy, Dur from ing:the hie temporary absence of the baggage man car, he .woold — steal a mail hag, and place it in Chia trunk. The Philadelphia mail for Roston hes been the one nsaally stolen. The exact amount of his robberies cannot be ascertained to•algbt, but they are said to ho very \heavy. In addition we learn dna Mr. Trickerman took passage on board the night train from New York on Sunday evening. Mr. Holbrook was also a passenger, with a police officer. bill Tucker man was seen to go in the baggage-car, take. a bag from the heap, place it in his trunk and lock itup. For some reason, however, probably from' a suspicion that he bad been bag , watched he unlocked the trunk again, took out the od threw it back.
