I had read so much about the conflicts
which this border country, between the lons
of the Crescent and the Cross, had been I en•
l c
gaged—so much about its ancient capit sr
frequently taken and retaken in the Tur isl
wars; and overflowed again, and again, an ,
again—some say thirteen times ,— so much a of
the revelation of ISO, when Central II at
poured upon the defenceless city the full fl e t
the Austrian cannon from the Buda fort est
causing nearly 100,000 people to fly from I ei
homes—that. 1 depicted on old city, with s al
tered steeples, and broken walls, and desol to
streets. Judge, then, of my suprise when, as
lag ascended tbkhill on which the Buda fort et
stands, I saw lipread out in a vast plain ac tit
the Danube a city of from 100 to 120,000 i in
habitants, with neat large houses either s ant

color, with wide streets; with an extensive
.. i
wharf; at which la a number of steamers and
barges, and along filch fora mile or a mile and
a half extended a street of beautiful houses.
No mark of ruin desolation was visible, bat
so far as theme co d see all was peaceful, or
derly and thrifty. he Danube makes a great
eceve as it passes e city. Pesth occupies the
, f
Inner side o the c, rve, presenting to the eye
rather a c nee: li iii: Across the river, but
rather abo e, is 11, da, called here Often; and
again ahoy this IsAlt, liir Old Ofen. The bill
of Buda rises directly opposite, crowned with
its fortifications, containing the palace and
government - builditigs,, and - a small tower;
while in a valley behind the hill and below ex
tends another part of the - tower, and on a higher
hill with precipitous sides is a strong fort over
looking and commanding both Peath and Buda.
The whole population Is estimated at 160,000.
A beautiful and strong suspension bridge—not
of wire, but of iron bars—was erected about
eight years since, at an expense of, over two
millions of dollars, It is a wonderful work.
The Danube runs with a current of seven or
eight miles an hour, and is fifty feet deep where
the pillars, which are more than COO feet apart,
are placed. The suspension chain, or rather
chains—for there are two on each side, one
about a foot shore the other—consists of eleven
Lars of iron, each about 10 inches deep and an
inch wide, so joined at intervals of convenient
length that each is the width of a sit/7r bor
distant from the other. The wagon w . •is t.".
feet, with a foot passage of 0 feet wide on each
side—the passengers always passing over en the
right, so that they never meet. The bridge
fare is one krentzer, or ahem fire-sixths of a
cent. Directly in a line with the bridge a tun ;
nel has recently been completed through the
fortress hill. In length and general structure
ft reminds one of tlif tunnel under the 'Thames
at London The fare through it is' also one
kreut zee.
As I stopped I. -prod the Sabbath in Pentb, I
visited a heatherof the altorehea. With the
Catholics it vas a late day, in some way con
nected with the Imperial family. In the old
parish church, which stands within the fortress,
and which for a century sod a half was convert
ed into a masque, the Bishop officiated, saying
high mat,. Nly friend, Prof; G., and myself
were passing the church on our way to a Luth
eran service, when we noticed a procession of
soldiers approaching,, with a fine musical band.
-They formed open lines, end a number of cligni
larks, at the head of whom was the Archduke
Albert, passed through and entered the church,
' taking a place, near the high altar. The soldiers
followed. Just as the Archduke entered, a pro
cession of priests, with burning candles, entered
from a side chapel, accompanying the Bishop.
And then followed flections and genuflections
alm,e'h without nuroGer. The Bishop had his
miter removed and thin replaced upon his head
about a dozen times: while at every act, as well
no itn presenting the missal, which was held be
fore hits by two attendants, almost as profound
bowo were made to him as were made to the
crucifix. The music was, scieolifically consid
ered, of a very buperlor cosier. The organ was
accompanied with trumpets, drums and violins,
and a number of voices, mien - rid female. Two
of the female voices were remarkable for their
sweeinero, fulness and compass. During the
service the Archduke stood, and seemed pro
foumlly reverent, but many of the dignitaries
and officers talked and laughed nearly all the
time. When the host was elevated, a loud dis
charge of cannon was made at the tort. At the
close of the service, the Bishop, bearing In his
hands a large silver cross, aniPoceo4anied by
his priests and candles, passed down the' central
aisle to the front door. , Standing at tho side of
the doorway, the dignitaries passed before him,
bowing as they passed, while he returned the
bow and blessed them. , An soon as the dignita
ries had passed, he passrd with hispriasta to the
side chapel, and left the teomraon people to retire
unnoticed and unblessed. At the door the sol
diers were truirslinled into line hy officers on
horseback, and two regiments passed \before the
church, bearing a'sadly tattered flag. .. citi
zen told us it was the flag riddled in the em
otion of 'DI, and from his lune and manner /
udged that he would be glad to sec it again

The Protestants numberabout 15,000 of th
population; the Greek Church about as many
there are several thousand Jews, and the re.
are Catholics. ' Throughout all Hungary, Ca
olics are to Protestants about as two to one.
Near the close of the 10th century, of thr
hundred noble families, all except four or fir
were Protestants. lint owing to the efforts of
the royal family anti the Inducements offered,
the nobility so entirely changed that only fif
teen or twenty remain Protestants. Strange
modes of conversion were also employed. In
one place, an we were informed, the Bishop un
dertook to convert the whole Protestant church.
When they had assembled for worship, a band of
soldiers surrounded the edifice, the Bishop en
tered, told them they must return to the fold of
the Church. and proceeded to place the conse
crated, wafer in every mouth; then declaring
them all to be Catholics, the church was closed,
and nailed, non to prevent any Protestant ser
vice being held. The laws also operate very
unfavorably. If a Catholic marries a Protest
ant wife, the children must all be trained in the .
Callon() Church; but if a 'Protestant marries a
Catholic wife, the eons go with 'tho father, but
tho daughters must accompany the mother. The
Bible here, as in other Catholic lands, is pecu
liarly obnoxious. Sone 2,700 copies, I was in
formed, had been seized and lent out of the
territory. The day for Bible burning has passed;
but Catholic Ingenuity has discovered another
method equally ollicacions. The Bibles seized ore
placed in water until the paper is softened, and
then theleaves are pressed and stamped together
One clergyman bad a beautiful copy of a Poly
glott Bible of 1301110 half a dozen languages,
which was seized by the police, treatestin this
way, and he was avail the price et the paper
by weight. Notwithstandnig all this, however,
the Protestant clergymen tell tim that of late
Protestantism is rattier strengthening than de
clining. And thauglt the Concordat hall placed I
education under theme of, the Jesuits, Protest
ants are resolved to educate their own children.
A gymnasium, with a corps of able professors,
is connected with the Lutheran church in Path
—a theological school is established in Olden
burg, and permission has been obtained to open
one In Weil, designed to be under the joint
auspices of the Lutheran and the Reformed
Churches. Each Churdh is to furnish its own
_temper of dogmatic .theology; the other chairs
are to be in common. How such a Mode will
operate is very uncertain! Some years since
considerable hostility existed between the two
bodies, hut the oppression of a common enemy,
and; IL Is to be hoed, more evangelical-feelings,

in Pesth thO Lutheran Church is much stronger
than the Reformed, but throughout the ementry
the Reformed Church has a greater number of
ministers and churches—perhaps
many.
•
The hotel in which I stopped is near the
house which Kossuth formerly occupied. I had
also the, plensure of forming the acquaintance of '
Dr. &clots, (pronounced Say-catch,) a Luth
eran minister, of whose congregation Kossuth
was a member—of Rev. Mr. Long, the sponsor
for one of Kossuth's children, and aloe shown a
beautiful pipe presented by him—and also of
Rev. Dr. Ballagi, a Reformed minister and Pro
fessor in the Theological School, and who Was
once the secretary of Gorgei. With all these
gentlemen I was much pleased, as I also was
with Rev. Mr. Batierhofer and his son, Prof.
Bauerhofer; but I was under special obliation
to Dr. Szekats and his accomplished lady for
their Christian courtesy.
From all that I could learn in Pesth, 1 was
led to believe that as a man, n scholar; and an
orator, Kossuth fully merited the reputation
which he acquired in England and in America.
In life and habits and aims he was irreproach
able. But I further found that his best friends
had no confidence in his ability as a leader. He
had no capacity for government. lie could rouse
the people by his oratory, and the masses yet
almost adore him, but he could net control or
direct the masses thus aroused. I found also
great diversity of opinion as to Gorgei. The
masses regard him as a traitor to Hungary, but
thinking men who knew him intimately say that'
as soon as be learned that England declined
intervention against Russia, he considered the
fate of Hungary sealed;and be consideredg to
be his duty to spare the lives of his army, ithd,
to secure for them the best- terms which he
n could. Bo this as it may, - he does not live in:
Is Hungary; nor would he,•l presume, think such
a- a residence to be safe. Vet there is op dispo
so sition for outbreak now in Hungary. There Is
di no dissatisfaction apparent, yet it is =quest iOl2-
id ably deeply seated, and may yet show itself in
tut an unexpected hour. Whether Hungary shall
tel remain tranquil or not, the American traveler
of will always associate the name of Kossuth with
to, its capital. And as long as the suspension
tie. bridge shall extend over the Danube, it will be
it- remembered that it was first opened to permit
ed the retreat et Kossuth's army when pursued by
the Austrian, M. S.
!gs Peith, October, 1857.
