The break down of Dennistoun &Co., has been
tollowed by that of the Western Bank of Scot
land By the list packet it was mentioned that
the anxieties regarding the probable fate of this
institution had gained increased force. Its
triends, however, still insisted that it would be
able to maintain itself. Whether this might
have been possible supposing other matters to
nave gone smoothly it is needless to discuss
The fall of Dennistoun ia Co. sealed its fate. Its
head quarters like those of that firm were at
Glasgow. It has more than one hundred branch
ea and its deposits are stated to amount to •.x
millions sterling, while its paid op capital Is a
million and a half. The American revulsion
fell upon it at a time when, from gross miscon
duct on the part of its manager, it was under
advance to a set of speculative firms, who failed
in a knot about three weeks hack, and inflicted
upon it a loss of at least 45011,000. The mana
ger was dismissed or vat least ordered to resign
immediately and a new one • Wits appointed, but
distrust had already been engendered—the news
corn Now York by each packet came worse anal
worse, involving many of the more respeetalile
connexions,—and at last the Dennistoun an
nouncement rendered further struggle impossi
ble. Previous to their failure they had applied
for assistance, first to the Bank of England and
then to their powerful rivals among the Scotch
banks. The Bank of
.England of course would
not entertain their request. This Scotch banks
would listen to it only on the condition—a very
fair one, looking at the past mismanagement that
had been developed—that the concern should be
wound up. This the Western Lank rittiste(l.
It had a large and profitable connexion, and it
was only by trusting to future profits that the
shareholders could hope to re instate their per- I
tiled capital. Both parties were uncompromis- I
tog, and in the midst of the dispute the doors
of the concern were yesteiilay finally closed.—
The shareholders are immensely wealthy—the
. Baird family, celebrated as among the richest I
iron misters in the kingdom, being the principal.
[knee there is not the slightest doubt of all its I
liabilities being met. That any portion of the
paid up capitalof £1,600,000 can be saved is
not to be hoped. If the - holders escape with the I
• loss of the mile value of their shares they will 1
have reason to ethankful.

Simultaneo with these there have been
other Amer can stoppages at Liverpool and
Paris. At Liverpool, Hoge & Williamson, cor
respondents of Hoge & Co., of New York, bare
broken down, 'with other smaller firms ; and at
Paris much consternation has been created,
especially . among American travelers on the
continent of 'Europe, by the stoppage of John
Munro & CO., who succeeded to the banking
business of Green &. Co. At Amsterdam, there,
has been Ii• rather large failure, the firm being
. that of Gellerkamp Brothers; but whether in
direct connection will, difonits from America-is
not stated.
Two suspensions bare also been announced in

M• . s. Waters was very much attached to her

daughter, and it is supposed that her husband,
noticing many material proofs of this liberality,
imagined that he was not the chief object of
her cares and affection, and reflecting upon this,
or perhaps fearing that PIM might finally be led
to settle all her properly on her son-in-law, he
came to the maniacal conclusion of avenging
himself in the heart-rending manner in which he
barbarously murdered his wife, his friend and

one instance to destroy the lives of two others.

DETALCATIO:i 01 SAMUEL LAWIIENCE.—Boston,
2. . 20, 1857,-The city is filled with tumors
L-day relative to certain money transactions of
Samuel Lawrence of the firm of Lawrence,
Stone & Co., which are styled, variously, liefal
cations, breaches of trust, and so on. Mr.
Lawrence is the head of the above named, firm,
and also the Treasurer of the Bay State and
Pemberton Mills at. Lawrence, and the Middle
sex Mills at Lowell. The most authentic ac
count of the affair that I am able to obtain is
that the firm of Lawrence, Stone & Co., before
the financial pressure commenced, borrowed
money from various sources to carry on their
business, giving their notes on demand. When .
thupinch came, Mr. Lawrence used the tiotia
an./ acceptances of the mills for which he was
agent, to pay the money thus borrowed. The
amount of this seems to ho that the stockhold
ers of the mills have, by the act, of their Trea
surer, been made to pay the debts of the firm of
xi:lib he was The head, but with which they had
nothing to do. ) I don't think It will be necessa
ry to invent any new and milder name for this
offence than either of Those which aro now ap
plied to it.
• Another story is that Mr. Lawrence had used
the money for purposes of private speculation.
- The amount of money allill misdirected—
there, I think that Is as mild to name as the
transaction will boar a misdirection — amounts to $BBO,OOO, divided in this way - among the dif
ferent corporations: Bay State Mills, 8225,000;
Middlesex, $280,000; Pemberton, $75,000.
