letter from Judge Wilmot to its editor, who re
marks that. it was not written for the public eye:

R. LYLE IYIIITE,. Esq.—Dear Sir:—Tho battle
is last, as men ordinarily estimate results. It-
will discourage the weak and doubting .the
venal will seek shelter in the camp of the enemy.
The men of courage and faith will stand firm,
with confidence unshaken in the-final triumph
of the Right.. Courage and perseverance aro
qualities essential in a conflict with Error and
Wrong—these with untiring activity, are the
elements of success in all great revolutions.
I look io the future with unshaken confidence.
Liberty cannot be crushed out is this age and
country. ' Oppression has no charter from God.
The Tyrant that now exults in power, and de
fiantly assails not only the constitutional rights
of American citizenship, but the Gokiven
rights of man, shall Soon fall a lifeless and
loathsome corpse, under the persevering and
courageous assaults of Truth. .
The mere politician believes in the potency of
great interests. He scoffs at the ides that any
other than selfish motives influence the action
of men. Truth.and Justice aro mightier than
Selfishness and Wrong., The Heroes and Mar
tyrs of our race attest the nobleness of Unman
ity. Men are capable of the highest motives,
and the most loyal steadfastness to principle.—
Truth is never silent, but pleads ever, with it-.
resistible persuasiveness and pOwer. There is
a strength in a noble, eelf-sacrificing disinter
estedness, battling in a just cause, that cannot
be overcome. All the great moral forces of Ns.'
tare are workiig unceasingly on the side of the
Right. In the struggle of life we require
strength in overcoming obstacles that beset our
path. Disasters test the constancy and courage
of parties as of men. In the nature of things re
verses must come, but if we are true to the cause
of Freedom and Humanity, our triumph is cer
tain; nor will the day be long postponed. Op
pression. injustice and wrong cannot stand
against. righteousness and truth—if so, Omnip
otence is dethroned—then is the earth a province
of the Evil One, and man the helpless victim of
his malignity. ,
In the hour of disaster and defeat we must
preselve an abiding faith in rectitude, and in the
'living energies of Truth. We must never de
apond, nor weary in the performanOe of our high,
duties. There is nothing in the result of the
late erection that should for a moment dishearten
our hopes, -or relax our efforts. It has not
changed the essential nature of things—it has
not m de the Wrong Rright—this is beyond the
powe of a -majority. Majorities can make the
rule to-day, bnkthey cannot make oppression
just; or eradicate from the hearts of men hatred

MEIIIVEB AND hr.—The following analysis of
the manner in which spiritual music is some
times produced, oc rred a few days since in
Lowell. The Vox opzdi says: "The celebrated

here, the last twoseeks such wonderful tricks
as drawing music from various instruments
without touching them, were outwitted, a day or
two since, by a printer of this city. The two
bey mediums were tied bands and feet, and put
into a dark (of course!) place with the instru
ments, the whole arrangement being first exam- 1
ined by the spectators. Now, en this occasion,
the said printer was a visitor, and he ,had been
to 'apply a little private test for his own satis
faction. Re took , along with him a very little
printing ink, (which is as tenacious as wheel
grease,) and marked therewith the instruments.
The performance went on; the mediums were
firmly tied and bound to their seats, to convince
the audience that they could not touch the In
struments; then came the darkness; then instru-
I mental music by the spirits; then the manager
said 'Let there be light,' and the mediums were
' unbound and came forth--each with fiver. icell
bedaubed with printer': ink."

Gov. Mcßaz, of Blississippi, proclaims Thanks-
giving in the following manner, „which is more
remarkable for a business-like than a religions

each year, as Governor of the State, without any
authority of law, but sustained by ancient cus
tom, appointed a day of Thanksgiving—Thurs
day, the nineteenth 'day of this month, is the
day now appointed, and I trust it will be ob
served. There is, certainly, Ischia super-ruling
Providence which has brought ds into existence,
and which will ultimately accomplish the ends
for which we were created, not only as individ
uals, but as a_people: Nothing can, therefore,
be lost by recognizing the obligation which we
owe to the Supreme Being—by it much may be
gained." •
