VERY NEARLY A COSFRAGRATIRN.—Yesterday
morning at about daylight as the steamer For
tune was coming in from Wheeling, and passing
the long line of steamers which fringe the levee,
she observed the flames bursting front the win
dows of the chambermaid's room on board the
steamer ilusensia. There are now lying here
forty-five steamers, jammed in side by side from
the Monongahela Bridge to the point. The Hi
bernia was in nearly a middle place and wedged
in by large boats, both above mud below. The
landing was silent, it being perhaps more de
serted then than at any other time during the
twenty-tour hours. Had the Fortune happened
along half on hour sooner or later, there would
have been, in all probability, a most dreadful
destruction of property. The Fortune woo just
in time to raise the alarm, which she did by
blowing her whistle, ringing her bell, &c. She
then run out her boat, manned it and succeeded
with the aid of those she had awakened, in
checking the flames.
Tine Hibernia is not injured to any extent.--
MI the damage can probably be repaired for $25.
The flames had just burst out of tine windows un
der the hurricane deck and began to take 'hold
of the ornamental work whirls, on either side is
somewhat disfigured with smoke and n little
scorched. When we consider what tdrifie con,
sequences might have reunited by a half-hour's
progress of the flames, through that line of
. boats, the little accident, is hardly worth men
tioning. _ _ _

The Collectors assembled, spout a . good par—

duty in the promises. We think they reached
no satisfactory conclusion. The whole object
of their meeting, &slat. -ns we could learn, was
to adopt some plan of concerted action, but no
could not learn that any was decided upon fur
