News of the City and Neighborhood
LIE nAICI AITD M'KiI3BEN ATTELAT.—We find
in the Philadelphia Prat, the organ of Mr. For
ney, which endorsed the Messrs. M'Kibben,
a letter front Mr. Jos. M'Kibben, giving his -ver
sion of the difficulty between Mr. Craig and the
'Messrs. M'K. We subjoin such as will be of in
terest to the reader :---"My younger brother
and myself first were aware of the pres
ence of Craig at Chambersburg about one
o'clock In the day. My father, apprehensive of
our return to town, impost' upon us the most
positive injunction that we should not do so un
til after the departure of the cars, at ten minutes
after two. Owing to the fact that our mother
Was coming down with some relatives at four
o'clock, we gave him the required promise.
When see supposed the cars had started,
spy brother anti myself, promising to await the
arrival of my mother and her friends started to
town. When within-a short distance of the de
potw.-Robert remarked that the cars had not start.
ed. No words passed between us: no plan of
fight; no concert of any kind. We walked up,
passing the first car, and thence to the second;
my brother remarked '.there he is." I looked
' •in the window, discovered - Craig on the opposite
side, and about four or five feet from me. I
should have shot him there, but it has always
been my determination to open the fight face to
l
face, should we come in collision. I told Roh
em to remain quiet, and walked back some ten
or fifteen paces to the front of the car. I enter
ed the front door, advanced, I think, about three
or four paces. when the sound of a shot, I he
-
Here, from Robert, brought my pistol up. Ido
not know who fired first. Craig or myself, bat
my impression is, that it was almost simulta
neous. I was standing during the first three of
-my own Flints, erect in the centre of the cars,
exposed to a fire so rapid, that I could not take
aim, lest, in the time of cocking and aiming he
should take a deliberate shot, as ho was armed
with sett-cocking revolvers, able to fire several
shots to one. During this time he was almost
entirely protected by the seats, shooting in a
stooping posture From where I stood, to the
back end.of the car, there was but one person
beside Craig and myself. I may have passed
others in entering the car; if so, and I under
. start I that it is the Case, excitement and imita
tion, not wantonness, made me forget that I wits
perilling oilier lives. After the abode, Craig
and myself both retreated towards the doors—
he to the back one, Ito the front; (this is the
Pursuit mentioned.) I believe we exchanged
shots at the door. lam not certain, but it was
said my last shot was fired outside the car. I
stood upon the platform of the ear, supposing I
had expended my last allot, and the only use I
could make of my pistol, and the use I did make
was to iptimidate. When Craig, after leaving
the back end of the car, jumped upon the plat
form, he and Robert exchanged shots—three or
four—each of them partially protected by the
--columns of the porch.
Craig fired two shots along the ear while I
was watching his proceeding, ban which did no
damage, as I took my bend oat of the way. Ile
then jumped melds end of the car and down on
the other side, which was the lest I sawof him."
Mr. WK. then goes on to examine the state
ments made in the Harrisburg TelegrapA, which
we have heretofore -published, touching this af
fair, and disputes many of them. Thesubstance
of the letter, however, is above.
CORRECTION.—to our local column op Fra
in a few lines in reference to the trial of id Mr. y
‘ . --Eyster and Mrs. White we staled that :--"Whito
had been separated from his wife for some time
on account of her alleged criminal intimacy with
Esyter."
Since then we learn that Mrs. White separa
ted from her husband on account of the treat
meat she received from him. There was no
alleged criminality at the time of the separation
as is shown by the evhlence of Drs. Gross, Mc.-
, Clintock, Mr. Gildenfenney and others, and of
that charge the defendants were both acquitted.
The nature of the case *as such that we refrain
ed from giving any attention to it further than
a casual notice. The facts as they came from
the witnesses have not therefore been spread
before our readers and we make this correction
as an act of justice to all parties concerned.
