I wont down to the odes of the Daily Dispatch
in the early part of last night; on my way home,
which is in the Ninth Ward, I stopped at the
house .of Thomas hunt, in the Fifth Ward, and
while there mot with a couple of young men
whose names I am not acquainted with; one of
them was named John; f drank with them there,
and was about starting up town, when they said
they had business the same way, and would go
along with me; they came • tot far as a public
house kept by a widow lady named Hunt, and
insisted on me going in and having a glass of ale
witir - them; while in there, I saw a man by the
name of annelid, with whom I was slightly
queinta, and tusked him to Lake a glass of ale;
I paid for it, and shorted to go home, when Stan-H
cliff said he would accompany me home; We two
men who went into the house with me started
out and were ahead of us; on our akty up, a dif
ficulty occurred between them—thai is, Stancliff
mod the other two men—and they got into a
scuffle; I separated the parties and picked up
Stancliff 's hat and put it on his head; we went
as fur as Dennett's tavern, when Stancliff com
menced blaekguarding me; gave him no cause
for It., however; started to go home, when I heard
Stancliff say he was cut; I was surprised on
hearing this, and went beck to see him; while
there, he ordered the night watch to arrest me;
after I was arrested ho told the watchman and
myself that it was not I that did it. J. Dots.
The Mayor, following up all the'elues he could
obthin to information on this matte‘r, implicated
in the dilbeulty and thereupon arrested n young
man named Dougherty. a resident of the Ninth
Ward.
The party stabbed hears three wounds, one in
the hand and the others in the back. lie Lae
beenst work in the establishment of Coleman,
Heilman & Cto. Stanoliff made the subjoined
statement
'1 was in the house of Mrs. Hoot, in the Fifth
ward, in the city of Pittsburgh, on Friday eve.

HfSRIIIIta MPRDLIL—One week ago last•Stib
bath, a mot horrible and brutal murder ova
committed in Eldred, in WEetin County. Th,
facts as we learn them are as follows: A man
by the name of Daniel Ml,ain, in company
with several others, went to Olean ou the
previous Saturday to attend Dan Rice's Circus
and get a five gallon keg of whiskey. The keg
WWI brought to the house of M'Lain and there
left. On Sunday morning, some of the neigh
bora entered the house and made inquiries for
ICLadn. His wife told him that he bad gone
away. Seeing a hand sticking out from under
the bed, and blood on the floor and on Mrs.
M'Lain's dress, be suspected that there was foul
play. Ho immediately assembled the neighbors,
and upon investigation it was found that
hod been murdered with an axe, his head being
almost literally cut in pieces. Five full blows
with the whole bit of the axe had been given
him, either of which would have proved fatal.—
One blow across the back of his neck, had
nearly severed his head from his body. A sharp
axe was found in the yard, covered with blood
and hair. The attack was probably made while
M'Lain was aileep on the bed, as the sheets
wore [outfit put away in rise wash tub, covered
with blood, and badly cut wtt h the axe. It op
pears that hFLain and his wife were in the habit
of, quarrelling; and the morning of the murder,
M'Lain was eeen chasing his wife with the
'broom from the house into the field. It is sup
posed that on her return she found him asleep,
whereupon she seized the axe and committed the
horrible deed. Mrs. )'lrvin is now in jail,

QUARTER SISKIO;I9.—The ease of the Porn
tonwealth vs. Iltiff, on which,the jury was out
as we stated on Saturday morning. wa, decided
during the tiny by n verdict of nut glidly. The
case was for false pretences, on oath of Mr. R.
H. Fife. The prosecutor pays the costs.
The case of (Ellara vs. Pennsylvania Railroad
was up on, Saturday. Mr. Stokes was pre
sent and ready in go on, but by mutual agree
ment between that gentleman and Judge :Thaler,
who wan counsel for plaintiff the ease went
over until last Saturday, when all parties were
to be reedy and finish up a case which has been
hefore the Conrt for a long time. J. 11. Mn'
ton, Eaq , appeared for the Railroad on Satur
day, but Judge Stealer declared the whole pro
ceedings in the case to be irregular, and said he
MO not prepared to go ea. The case was again
deferred.

says,—"Accounts front Shippensburg by the
noon train of cars to-day, reuresent Mr. Craig,
who was shot by the brothers at
Chambersburg, on Tuesday, to being confined
to his bed. The second pistol ball received by
him In the grhin still eludes the search of the
physicians, although nothing serious is appre
hended from this fact. The strongest hopes ore
entertained of his recovery. His wife and lath
er-in-law, the elder 31 . 1iihhin. visited" him yes
terday, and ore profuse In their attentions to
him."
AT a recent Teachers' Institute fa New Castle
the following among other resolutions was
adopted:
Reso/eed, That an equal amount of labor per
formed, should receive an equal compensation,
whetherperformed by male or teruale; therefore,
well qualified teachers, should receive the same
wages without regard to sex-
That-is not only sensible but eminently
just
and should not simply be "resolved" hut acted
up to.

be good authority that the County Commission
ers have received official notice from the proper
officers of the Pennsylvania Railway, that they
shall not declare a dividend at the end of the
present half-year, and it follows therefore that
the interest on the County Bonds will not be

bell & Co., on Rebecca .ntreet, Allegheny, on
Friday night, runsacked.the room, and stole
tonne three or foardollara in change, with which
they decamped without detection.

We learn from the Mercer Whig of Monday
"On "Thursday last, two men giving their,
names as John Brennan and Thomas Crawford.
who with others are suspected of being the per
petrators of the robbery of Mr. Bodge of s4oo
on the 14th instant,. were arrested and had a
hearing before Edward Miller, Esq., of Clarks
ville, upon the charges of having committed a
robbery of about $7O, in Vernon township,
Trumbull county, Ohio, and of having in their
possession coamterfeit 6oin, and passing the
rame.. After the hearing, the justice concluded
to hold them to answer, and upon their failure
to give bail he committed them to jail. War
rants were its, issued for two other INJIT•OIiti
charged with Irvin,' engoged in the robbery, but
they have eluded tire vigilance of the officers.

Tua Washington TriAuse says that at the late
Synod at that place the committee upon Waah
ington•Collegc reported, and their report, was
accepted. It sets forth that over sixty-two
thousand dollars hare been subscribed to the
permanent endowment fund. Thanks were re
turned to Rev. John M. Faris, who has resigned
his position as agent for the SYrrod for their
College,. and Rev. A. Swaney, who takes his
place, was commended to the churches. The
College was never in- a more prosperous condi
tion. Messrs. Acheson and Wines have been
appointed Tutors. This is regarded as equiva
lent to another Professor.
