Fraudulent returns have been received from
M*Gee county, at Lecompion, adding over a ,
thousand names to the list, and giving those
votes to Ransom and the pro-slavery candidates '
for the Legislative Assembly. Thact , returnx bear
mitt-n 4 (olden, of fraud, and fortimatrly defeat
liomn‘tirer, as they have failed to designate the
others for which the several candidates were vo
ted fir. A protect was filed yesterday, signed

to, , toting forth that there are not fifty adult
white male citizens of the United StAdes residing
within the County of M'Gee : that the said
i County belongs to the Cherokee Indians: that
thvra are no white residents there but traders
and missionaries: that the Indian title has been
extinguished to no part of the said M'Gtee coun
ty, and that it was specially reserved by the or
ganic act out of the Territory of Kansas, and
constitutes no part of it, and that any elections
held there have no more effect upon the people
of Kansas than have those held in Missouri or
Arkansas. lam cirdibly informed that the GO,
and Secretary rein reject these returns, and

The same correspondent says that the manda
mus of Judge Cato wda served upon Gov. Walker
by a man whose official term had expired and
was not qualified to serve it legally. The Gov
ernor is said to have treated it as a farce.
The farce, however, may turn out a tragedy,
if the telegraphic dispatch from Washington.
published by us on Saturday, should prove
The President, according to the dispatch
takes the side of the Border Ruffians, thinks it
was all right, to copy the Cincinnati Directory
and send it up as a genuine list of Kansas voters
at a poll where there were no voters, and cheat
the people out of their rights by n most hare
faced fraud. This fraud the President is pre
pared to endorse ; the whole democratic party is
also prepared to endorse it ; and GOT. Walker
will be shelved along with Reeder, henry and
Shannon, for daring todo one honest and praise
worthy act. The democratic party is not to be
done out of its victory by the honesty °fits over.
officious official. How dared Walker to do such
a thing! Did he not know that Buchanan was
elected by fraud—that fraud is the life-blood of
the party, and that fraudulent returns are not
to be treated as such when they elect Democrats
to office " If he did no t
‘ know it he must learn it.
Fraud— fraud—it is nahing but fraud wherever
the party has a chance of committing it.
Some people have been congratulating hem
selves that the Kansas business was settled ; bu t
these developments from Washingtonof the par.
poses of Buchanan, show that it is as far from
being settled, as ever. The administration will
not let it be settled; and so long as it chooses to
keep it an open question by taking the side of
wrong and rascality, .we are content to stand by,
for a little while, and see how the pUrty is g o ing
to get along tneler the load the President is
putting upon it.

consequence of this step, until the meeting of
the Legislature. To their request the tiovernor
responded in a letter of conic length, deploring
o pressure of the times, and stating among
other things that he would have done what the
people ask of him at any rote. After all this
he concludes with the following.
'•1 confess, gentlemen, tq a feeling of section
al pride, which is' irresistibly awakened by a
survey of,the circumstances that surround us.
The North is tottering with paralysis; her fac
tories suspending, her merchants failing, and
all the avenues of business blocked up with the
ruins of commercial wreck. I speak not of this
to rejoice over her misfortunes, tout to ask what
is the ultimate, and almost her only hope of re:
lief ! Who', can revive her commercial prosper-
ity7 Why is it that the South, amidst the
thunder of the crash stands calm and unmated,
poised upon the consciousness of her capacity
to outride the tempest ?"
If Governor liershell V. Johnston, of Georgia,
ever wrote a more inconsistent or heartless sen
tcn••c, he deserves to he put side by side with
the other great lights of the Demecratic party
in some chosen place in the Cabinet. While ac
ceding to II request which in itself implies the
intcusest pressure upon the financial agencies
and the business of the State, he pauses to con
gratulate the South "at its calm and unawed
position:" Were there a Republican Governor
in the Free States base enough to exult, in an
official document, over the misfortunes which
prompted the merchants of Savannah to take
the position above referred to, or in the silence
which broods over all the great industrial move
ments,of the country, South as well North, we
would never hear the last of it, as prompted by
a treasonable, an unbrotherly and a mean spirit
not only earthly and sensual, but devilish.—
" Democratic " triumphs would be extort et! from
such a petty display ,of " Black Republican
malice." Coming, however, as it does from "the
great and generous South" which cannot get a
hoe-handle, or n shoe, or a plow, without cooling
to die North for it, it is all right and just and
full of brotherly love. But even if it should be
called all this—what do you say of its con

Too Quiet:.—The Democrats of New York
city, at a meeting held on Thur.tlay night, cor
dially endorsed the course of Dor. Walker, of
Kansas, in the matter of the election frauds;
anti Forney'e paper, the Philadelphia Pr.; is
equally explicit in the same behalf. It says:
"A day or two since, the telegraph announced
that Governor Walker had decided to throw out
returns, which he believed to be illegal, of a
certain district which had nominally elected
Democratic members of the Legislature, and
had thus shown that he was no ready to prevent
the COUNUMMIOIOII of a ftattel designed to in
crew • the legislative strength of the party with
whiell be acted, as he was to prevent fraudulent
action against that party. For this he was de
nounced by some virulent partisans: but if the
facto as originally reported are correct, we feel
well assured he will be sustained in his decision
by tine general sentiment of the whole country.
It was his duty' to do all in his power to secure
a fair expression of the sentiments of the citi
lens of Kansas at the lute election, and themore
thoroughly he has discharged that duty, the
more credit does he deserve.
when it is
'Alice the above article was written, Gov.
Walker's reasons for rejecting the vote of the
Oxford precinct, in Johnson county, hove been
made public. We publish his proclamation on
the subject. It is a paper that reflects high
credit on hint. We honor his courage; his can
dor, and his integrity. No man can road this
noble document without feeling that truth and
patriotism dictated every line of it."
This was before the announcement from Wash
ington that the President has disapproved of
Walker's court and will remove him or cause
him to resign. Of course, the Prig nut the en
tire party, after arranging to make party capi
tal out of Walker's proclamation, will now turn
round and take the other side. It will he hard,
certainly, to swallow such articles as the one
we have quoted from, but it will be done.
AN Uxwonruir ESAMPLE. —The "National
Democrats" of Lecompton, true brethren of the
party of that ilk in Pennsylvania, have held a
meeting to denounce Gov. Walker for being se
undemocratic as to reject a fraudulent election
return. They resolved as fellows
"That this meeting will not imitate the un
worthy example of the Governor and Secretary,
by going into an investigation of the fact as to
whether the Oxford returns contain illegal votes
or n0t..":..
We have thus high democratic authority for
saying that to inquire into the illegality of elec
tions is an "unworthy example" for democratic
office holders to set. What an abandoned party
it_ must be which stigmatizes an honest act as
being "unworthy"!
