TO Hnoor tosr..-he Harrisburg Tel
, ~ syrup/. of Wednesday. gives us the following, in
addition. tO.litiat has been already published
• about thitt ' il4ting.affair at Chambersburg :
- While Waited in the cars yesterday afternoon,
~.
; in company vrill ten or fifteen other passengers,
on his return to Pittsburgh, via our city, Mr.
Craig was suchlenliv attacked by his two brothers
_ in-law with retro vers, one at the door and the,
other at a window of the car, with which they
• oominenced .fitin at hint in rapid succession,
, one of the halls taking effect in his back anti
passing completel through his body. Notwith
_ atutding which, r. Craig immediately sprang
to his feet, and, reducing a revolver himself,
pursued his an nist at the'door, and shot him
in the arm and 1 g. which caused him to retire
~ immediajely in o mpany with his brother, who
: had by his tittle xhausted the citsrges in his
• pistol.
Mr. ig Mame , iately received medical atten
tion, bu as. his w ad was not pronounctSi dan
gerous resume his sent in the ears and pro
,:oeeded n his jo rney as far as Bhippensburg,
where, h wever, a re-action took place, and he
was co iled to leave the train for further
medical gentian.
The and, re dived by SPllibben were also
pronoun not ngerous. Altogether some
eighteen shots were fired in the car, and the
only wonder Is that some of the other passengers
were not killed or ounded.
It Is staled that Congressman M • Kibbett had
also in his hand large bowie-knife when ho
commenced the at k. . •
..
Ma Craig is a • ntleman of wealth and high
standing in the c.mmunity of which he is a
meinber, and the tuck made upon him is uni
versally regarded .y the citizens of Chambers
burg as being cows dly and outrageous.
P. 8.--Since wr Ling the above we have re-
attired some additlo al news respecting the en
counter by the. pa. engers in the noon train Of'
cars from Chamber .urg ,to-day. . They state
that Craig received wo balls instead of one, and
that but one had b en:eitracted, the other elu
ding the search of the_physicians. He is still
remaining at Ship. nsburg, although his case
is not considered de gerous.
The surnames of e brothers bbens are
Joseph and Robert, t. n
former being the Con
gressman elect from California, and the indi
vidual who .shot at 111. Craig from the door of
the car.. It is since *scovered that he rec'ved
only a slight wound i the emu from the tol
of Mr. Craig. His br titer escaped unwoun .
The 111'Kilibens we is both arrested at tit
' instance of Mr. M*Clelland, and bound over in
k it
the sum of $BOO to answer a charge of assault
and 'battery with. intent to kill.
Mr. James Reily, of oar city, was standing
on the platform of the car, immediately beside
M'Kibben at the time the assault was made, and
narrowly escaped from being ishot. Altogether
twenty shots were fired—fifteen by - the al'iiib
bene, and five b 7 Craig. This latter gentleman,
it appears, hind two pistols in his possession --a
Colt's and Allen's revolver\ His firing was
principally directed towards Roberi WKibbene,
as, he thought, being the most dangerous of the
assailants.
A coanssrosnisr of the Greensburgh Herold
writing fro Brady's Bend, from which place so
much rail y iroit mines to this, city says:
.
'These ills produce over 12,000 tons of iron
per annum, of a qtudity, as proved by actual
trial ttlUttrp ett by any in the world, and much
superior to t e imported article.' The labor re
quired tot nsform the ore into the finished
rail is alnios
_incredible and must be seen to be
realized. A the present time, or when in full

furnaces, ca able of melting 54000 tons per
Annum. The blast with the, other necessary
Machinery, is driven by two engines, each of 8
feet sttoke, or an aggregate of 100 horse power.
Thiamount of coal used for coke and fuel is
immense, averaging 2000 tons 150,000 bushel)
per week, and is brought from the mines by
railroad, of which the aggregate length is at
lerat .25 miles, neatly f of it being under
ground. The rolling mill is the most interesting
part of the Works. The building iteelf covers
an area of 225 feet by 150, containing 25 pud
dling and 9 beating furnaces, which with the
railer!, &c., iequires nearly 450' men. In ad
dition to the mill and furnaces, there are also an
extensive foundry and machine shop for supply
ing the necessary castings and machinery, as all
the machinery used is manufactured on this
i . premises. ". e
't •
,One feature ittthe management of these works
as it is rather uncommom may be noticed. The
comp:mix owns - over - 6,000 acres, In fee simple,
besides a mineral right to a large additional
traql, and furnishing dwellings to all their em
ployers, may be said to, own a town which now
numbers a popnlatien of not far from 4,000 per.
110115.
Its an evidence that all the fast growing towns
are oot in the West, I would remark that within
the last year the company has erected over 80
neat, substantial dwellings; not untrniquently a
