WHEN TO SELL WHEAT, &c.—Wo observe that
several ofthe country papers advise their agri•
cultural readers not to thresh out -their wheat;
but to wait for better prices, assuring them that,
before long, England will be sending her gold
to their barn-doors to purchase the grain.
We are sorry to see such unwise suggestions.
For it is always a mistaken policy, and is more
so than ever now, for farmers to hold back their
croft. The harvest abroad this year has been a
very good one, and ofbsolute necessity for Eu
rope to buy our grain here is none. In ordinary
seasons, when money plenty in London, wheat
can always ho sold the e, however, if offered at
a sufficiently low price; for dealers in the ar
ticle, tenipted by itsheapriess, buy it to store
away. But as a mon ary crisis-seems impend
ing in England little American wheat will be

purchased there, unl s the price ranges touch
lower than our farms s are, as yet, willing to
sell it for. The than are, therefore, that the
price will fall, instead of advancing.
This view is sustain d by the define in price
since the harvest. this neighborhood, the
farmers who threshed ut their crop immediately
after it was gathered received frdm a dollar
and three quarters to dollar and eighty cents
per bushel. The Tr nton State Gazette men
tions a farmer, who, a little later, was offered a
dollar and seventy ces, hut refused it, (teeter s

It is always bad policy, however, to boll
back the crop. In fact, the moment a farmer
does this; he begin's to-do what he denounces so
warmly in certain city operators; that is, h
begins to speculate. The business of the agri
culturist is to raise crops, and, when they nr
harvested, to sell them at the market price. I
a normal condition of things, that price is regu
lated by supply and demand. In years of plens
ty. wheat should be low. In famine years, it
ought to be high. Any attempt to keep , back
the crop, no matter whether made by grower
or others, is an effort to create a fietitiou
scarcity, and is as opposed to good morals and t
the hest interests of society as it is to legitimat •
purposes of trade. Intelligent agriculturists,
for example, have assured us that, in the long
run, those farmers make the most money who
sell their crops as soon after harvest as poosild6.
And the reason is plain, Few men can do two
things ; well at one and the same time; and to
grow grain, end afterwards speculate in it, are
such entirely differen pursuits, that loss is sure
to accrue if the ay rage of several years is

those who were obliged to yield to the pressure
and suspend payment, there was the name, of
one gentleman published last week whose case
is peculiarly severe. Some years ago, when
gold was first discovered in California, he went
out there, and by his exertions, accumulated
upwards of $lOO,OOO, which he invested in real
estate, and returned to this city and engaged in
active business here. A few months ago, when
there was a financial panic in San Francisco, be
sent out an agent to look after his interests,
with orders to convert everything into rash, at
any sacrifice. The result was that the agent
closed everything for $60,000, with which he
started for home, and took passage on board the
Central America, in which vessel he was lost
with his treasure, and the owner from independ
once has been reduced to poverty. This is a
hard cam, indeed.—Boston Gazette.

Cawnpore was that, of Lieut. Sanders, of H. M.

A DIFFNAENCL—If we had five niggers at
large in this District, contrary to law, the Presi
dent, old as he is, would mount his horse, and,
at the head of his marines, would sustain the
Constitution and the Union at all hazards, and
at all costs. But as, instead of five niggers, we
only have five banks at large, sanitary to law,
the Administration contents itself with express
ing a little harmless disapprobation. One runa
way nigger would bring down upon us the
whole army of the United States. Five runa
way banks have brought doirn upon us nothing

ON Oov. Walker'S return from the precinct of
Oxford, he halted at Lawrence, and taking out
of his portfolio a large roll of paper, said to the
crowd that he would show them a curiosity, if
they promised not to destroy it. He then unroll
ed the returns of the precinct of Oxford, which
contained sixteen hundred and one names, all
written in the some hand-writing, and which
measured exactly fifty-four feet in length ! All
the names, except one hundred and twenty, were
copied from tWillianis' Cincinnati Directory,'
those eommenoingwith the same letter following
each other as regularly as they do upon the
pages of that book.

large, and the bullion brokers were not anxious
to buy at 10i cent.. prem. The Banks are
estimated to hold twelve millions, and with the
California steamer and the Persia, due within a
day or two with large supplies, our Banks are
not strengthening themselves by purchase. They
receive every day considerable amounts over
