A terrible seeident happened at like lire which
is thus described by the Chicago Press:
From the great height of a block which tow
ered high sheep the less modern anti humble
block on the east one of the oldest in the city.
The store No. 119 was occupied by the Messrs.
Barnum as an extensive variety store. '

It was thought advisable to clear the store,
and a large force of men, firemen and others.
were aiding in the removal of the goods. Num
bent of firemen and citizens were upon thereof
Probably at ono time not less than two hundred
persons were within and upon the building. It
was though , that the store was comparatively
safe; doubtless those who so fearlessly rushed in
bad no thought of peril.

The portion of the wall left standing bad fortu

which was densely thronged by a confused
crowd. Many of them Were rrostrated by the
dying missiles, many were trampled and bruised
in the (light of their companions, but soon all

that the packets for Europe carry out full loads
of passengers—natives of Great Britain and the
continent—migrating homeward to escape the

"Election returns have been received from
nearly every county in Hansas,and the result is,
every district—except the Leavenworth and
Achison Districts—have gone overwhelmingly
Free-State. Such a disparity of strength was
scarcely ever before exhibited between two con
tending part leil fur power as is seen in the vote
throughout all Kansas, except on the Immediate
Missouri border. Seventy to nothing-16U to 8
—240 to 0-806 to 11—this la the way the vote
runs where the polls were not convenient of ac
cess from Missouri.

the oily that the officers in the army stationed in
KALIBMS, have petitioned the President for the
removal of Oov. Walker, on account of his in
terference with the troops to induce them to vote
at the late election. Certainly his conduct was
reprehensible in the extreme, anti deserves the
strongest condemnation. We doubt, however,
whether the President will hue tikei grit' to re
move him after such an evidence of "devotion

CHAttACTREISTIC.—It turns out that the •pres
ent' made by President Buchanan to the captain
of the Norwegian barque which rescued some
of the passengers of the Central America, was
paid for out of the public Treasury, and not
from Mr. Buchanan's own pocket, as *as rep
resented. Congress appropriated some $2OOO for
rewarding officers of foreign vessels who ren
dared aid to American Teasels, and from this
fund the present was made.

that ft. H. Winslow, Esq., of the firm of Wins

illness, caused by the late financial troubles, in
which his house had so large an interest- John

day of the bank suspension. The excitement
of the day caused a bleeding at the lungs, which
has terminated fatally.

very light, resort has been had very generally
to retail sales at a reduction below the wholesale
prices for cash. Credits are now refused, and .
business is contracted to a mob basis. Oa these I
terms few goods are sold. At auction nothing i
can be done. Large quantities of imported
goods are being returned to Europe. The re
sort
to renewals of notes and general extensions I
is becoming epidemic. Transactions of this 1
kind have taken place in private. Bank officers I
inform us that most of their bills receivable as
they fall due are met by renewals and '
counts. and could not otherwise be paid.
There is a gtneral disposition on the part of
the creditors to ease their debtors, whom it Is
not their interest to let go down if possible. The
quantity of goods on hand is very large, and
unsaleable on the present terms. Some expec
rations are entertained that the domestio ex-
change will improve in time to admit of a late
trade before the winter sots in. We trust it may
be so. The receipts of produce may improve so
as to admit of a fair country trade ; but we re
mark that the public stores of New York and
Brooklyn, which were full of cereals this time
last year, are now comparitvely empty. The
stock of breadstuff" is not accumulating as usual

speed, while eight in ten were entirely closed.
"Nothing to do" is the voice that painfully
