THE SACRED BEMIRE OF IFLAX.—Rev. Dr.
Shauffer, for the last twenty-five years mission
ary at Constantinople, delivered an address in
Brooklyn last Sunday, in which he spoke of the
general belief which prevails among the Turks
that their religion has closed its mission, and
stated the feet that the green coat of Mahomet,
which is the sacred banner of Mohommedanism,
had disappeared from Constantinople. This
article is believed by every true Mahommedan
to have been woven In heaven, and brought to
Mehemet by the Angel Gabriel, and it is also an
article of belief that when the course of Islam
ism is to terminate, the single will again descend
and retake it to heaven. For centuries it has
been guarded with the greatest care in •partio
ular mosque in Constantinople. Last spring . it
mysteriously disappeared. The missionaries
think it was clandestinely removed because
Constantinople had become too much a Chris
tian city, and that it will sometime be displayed
in a more sacred place. It is said, however,
that some prophecies in the Mahommedan ea.
(wed' books have pointed to the preient time as
closing the reign of their religion; and this dis
appearance of the sacred banner adds to the
popular impression. At any rate, the. urkish
Mahommedan, and the Turkish Government
itself, have undergone a great change of senti
ment toward Christianity within a few years.—
Two curious instances of the same change among
other Mahommedans came to us by the last
foreign mail. The Shah of Persia has placed
his Moslem, Christian, and other subjects on the
same political level: The Bey of Tunis also has
granted to his people a constitution founded
upon the most liberal principles. Ms general
officers of state, in the-presence of all the for
eign agents, the French Admiral, and the prin
cipal European inhabitants, took a solemn oath
to Maintain it inviolate. These thingsire doubt
less but a curious coincidence, and yet they im
press the mind as more than ordinarily signifi
cant.
