that the river is up 'they may turn an honest

prime interest inay come up. There are 10 per
sons charged.with the crime of murder now in
jail to be tried, and some one of them will be
placed credit stand durintlife ireelc. Of course,
we cannot say what particular ease may come up
first.- '

proudoed balinon ascension from Allegheny City
on Eirgifiltirvias a perfect success. An immense
nasemblage, numbering at least 6000 people,
crovideillide and around the enclosure, where a
band of nittaiewas playing, while Mons. G. in
flated his aerial ship., - - The balloon is an elegant
thing i:ery Symmetrical and capacious. It tossed
'about in the , trind for an hoer after we hail
reached the grounds, as if impatient of restraint,
until tit letigt b, with the Godard brothers, and Dr.
Schenck, it sprang up into the air like a thing
of life, and sailed away steadily to the North
East...- Mona . Auguste Godard was sitting in a
awing suspended from the car, the seat of it at
16 feet below the other, passengers. As the
.‘Canadeleaped from the ground, clearing the
top of .the market house by irhundred feet and
soaring over the tops of the great hills that lie
back-of Allegheny City, Mons. Ang4te waved
his hand to the crowd beloW, turned over back.

navigators cast anchor, bat suppose they did not
go far, as night was close at hand when at half

the examination, and appeared quite disappoint

a threehing machine was in operation. He, for
some purpose, was running some loose straw
through the machine, when his fingers were
caught by the teeth, and his whole arm was
soon drawn into the meshes, tearing the limb
off at the shoulders. Surgical aid was procured
by Mr. Mat. Harbison, who rode to the city, a
distance of ten miles, in -an hour, but to no
avail, and the unfortunate man died early an
Sunday morning. He was about-forty years
of age. and his loss is mourned by a large num
ber

Tar. Atarrictra Standard says the bill passed a
few days before the adjournment of the Legisla
ture last spring, chartering a company to locate
a bank at Uniontown, h; become a law without
the signature of the Governor. The bill for the
establishment of a bank in M'Keesport also be

J. B. BACKHOUSE ' Esq., who was reported by
a Portion'of the city. press as dead on Saturday
morning last was still alive and apparently as
well as he has been for some time past, at 9
o'clock on Saturday. So at least we were in
formed by a gentleman from Sewickley.

sioned to-day by u report that the Bank of Pennsyl
vania bad made an asaignmenL The rumor was
Positively contradicted by a Director, who declare'
athat metnotion was never broached in the Board
nor entertained by any of ita members. The Board
is now in
session and will probably give official con
tradiction to the report.
I IPIIILADELPIIIA, Oct. 17. —Delaware county gives
Packer 1,598: Wilmot 1,614; llaselburst 619. Judge
Bell received two majority forJStato Senate, and is
elected from the district composed of Cheater and
Delaware countie".
PUILADELPRIA, Oct. 17.—Tho notes of all solvent
banks before the suspensions in this State, excepting
the Bank of Tamaqua and the Farmers' Bank of
Laneaster, era now taken on deposit by tho lank. of
Philadelphia, and are paid out for their checks and
notes. It Ls supposed that an arrangement will be
made also to take the above two banks. The Banks
of Baltimore do not take any Pennsylvania or Vir
ginia notes. The Virginia notes are at a discount
of from one to two per eentum there.
New Ont.easts, OeL`l7.—The ran upon the city
banks has subsided. and confident.° in their stability
beingrestored, affairs have assumed a more cheerful
appearance, and the money market is easier. The .
Gee banks that suspended specie payments antici
pate an early resumption. No 'failures are reported.
There is still nothing doing in exchange.
New ORLEANS, Oct. 17.—Everything is more
cheerful. The Bank of New Orleans is paying some
specie and will resume entirely next week. Onkey
A Hawkins resume on Monday.
P. A. Dougherty Co., western produce dealers,
suspended

12 years were Blatantly killed while walking on the
track of the Hartford and New Harew Bead, con
trary to the rules of the Asylum. The bodies were
horribly mangled. Their names were John Parker
and Benjamin Demon.
The Charter Oak, Mercantile and Exchange 'Banks
receive hi 114,4 all the other suspended banks. They
will Out discount them utile,s they are enjoined.
Sr. Louis, Oct. li. River etationary with fax foot

Sr. Louis, Oct. li.—The report thal, the Bank of
the Stale hid smipanded is noon°. The Directors
have determined to pay every dollar and express
confidence in the ability or the Boatel° weather the
present storm as well as that of 1837.. There era,. no
run to-day.
Creasman, Oct_ 17.—At a meeting of the bankers
this morning, it was resolved to receive at par the
notes of all the New Orlans banks, and ell banks
that aro bankable in New V; ork, Boston, Philadel
phia, Pittsburgh and Baltimore. This causes much
improved feeling in the money market.

Republican figures give Chase 1112.1 majority, while
the Democrats give him 300.
Oat. 17.—The Columbus Journal esti
mates Chase 65 ahead, with Paulding and Ideigs to
hear from. Paulding has given. Chase 169, and
Ideigs 200. The official vote may change the re
ported majorities in the aggregate in favor of Chase.
Chase is probably elected.
Coumaus, Oct. 17.— AU the counties are in; Chase
is reported to be 1120 ahead of Payne: .
CHICAGO, Oct. 17.—The retarns from Minnesota
