THE VICISSITFMES Or COOIRECL.-A few
months since, the partner of acomosercial house:
in this city was taken to a lunette asylum, utter
ly deranged,-a.-wan said, by- his unreralleled
prosperity in business.. During the year pre-
Ti 0133. his Erni had cleared $1,300,000. Heated
in the uylum, and his own estate was valued at
$2,600,000, all invested in the concern of which
he was • partner. The firm itself failed the
other day, and is now said to be utterly insol
vent. One item of the assets of the deceased's
estate was ithetuoind shares of the Illinois Cen
tral Railroad stock, which was selling at the
time of his decease, at $l4O a share, and which
was worth, after paying up the instalments,
ssoo, ooo. The same property eold yesterday at
public sale at $60,000.
All this occurred within eighteen months—the
prosperity, the insanity, the decease, and the
insolvenoy.—N. Y. Post.
A Now Root or ALL Erit.—A Texan cor
respondent of the New Orleans Picayune for
words to that journal some specimens of a root
which is found on the range of stud-bins bor
dering-on the Rio Oraide, which the Indians eat
for its er.hilerating effects, since It produces pre
cisely the game excitement as do alcoholic
drinks. The Indians call it Pis-o-ke; but the
whites hare denominated it the "whiskey root."
It is of the coctus specie, ancUmay be sliced and
dried, still retaining its intoxicating Power. An
Individual desiring to feel happy has only to
chew a few sllees and swallow the juice, and the
thing is accomplished.
Is an Indian paper of recent date we notice a
very characteristic eastern advertisement. A
merchant who rejoices in the name of Boboo
Booroopohaud Dosq, advertises for sales lot of
Dacca muslin& They are described as so fine
that a whole piece ban be with ease passed
through a wedding ring, awl when spread on
the grass in the early morning, are so undistin
guishable from dew that it is reported that a
cow ate a whole web while grazing without dis
covering it. The Emperor /Aber rebuked his
sister for indelicacy In appearing before him
clothed in only seven folds of this texture.
AN English writer says, in bis advice to young
married women, that their mother Eve “mar
ried a gardner." It might be added that the
gardner, in consequence of his match, lost his
situation."
