Developments of die Flood of .011—SIgias of an Indian Hanle. Menu. Editors : As the excitement of politics is nearly over, the people will now be looking for some serious matter-of-fact news. Accord- ingly I shall endeavor to give you an account of a singular curiosity that came under my notice some five or six years ago. which will no doubt interest your readers, especially those of them conversant with the incidents of the "olden times," within the limits of our county. A pert of the forte belonging to W. P. Ferree, lying in Robinson township, opposite the lower end of Neville Island, is entirely overflown at times of high floods. The water runs with ■ . . smart current across this bottom, until it is checked by the back-water coming up from the mouth of blontour's run. The lower part of the botioni is found, upon the subelding ,of the waters., to to covered with sand and loam, in some places as much as 18 inches in depth. But on the upper end of this bottom, where tho water - breaks over the bank and runs with a smart current, the top coil of two or three acres was swept off during the flood of 1852, as clean as if It ;had been swept with a broom. Upon this clean swept ground were found by the writer and others several dozens of lead bullets, varying in size from the bulk of an ounce ball down to the size of over 100 to the pound.— These bullets had eiidently been shot from ride guns, as every one of them had obvious inden tures of rifle bores upon them. It ins further evident that but few of these bullets had struck any hard substance, as very few of them were battered. As so many bullets were found upon this ground, where a swift current must have been forcing them onward, it is reasonable to suppose that a vast quantity of them had been moved and deposited in the sand in the lower end of the field. These bullets hare been deposited here by some circumstances unknorin to us. There were also appearances of burnt stones and fires scattered over the same ground, from which it is evident that an encampment had been made here at an early day. These are I strange developments. Can the venerable author of the "Olden Times" tell us how these bullets come here Y On this ground doubtless a battle has been fought, probably with the In dittos ; and had the actors in it left us a raeurd of the event, this ground might have been as ' celebrated as the far-famed Braddock's But, in the absence of any historical account of how these bullets came there, I will relate an account of a skirmieh that occurred with the Indians and first settlers of this part of the country, at a very early date, given to me by one of the descendants of an actor in the adven ture—not indeed by the present and constant correspondent of the Dispatch, from Findley and Fayette townships, but by one of older days and riper years; one who was conversant with many of the most interesting incidents of the first settlers of our part of the county. I have thought it might be possible that the story I dm about tarelate will explain bow some of the bullets were thrown there; but this is merely a surmise of my own. The story ran thus:—ln.the early settlement of Moon and Findley townships, the ere set tlers of this part of the county were frequently annoyed by the Indians making excursions from the other side of the river into this settlement, for the purpose of plundering, stealing and carry ing off all, or any of the necessaries of life, and sometimes murdering the inhabitants also. Af ter enduring as much of such depredations, as it was possible for human nature to bear, it.was at length resolved to raises party and pursue these midnight plunderers and chastise them.— A company was accordingly hastily collected, and started in pursuit. They soon succeeded in getting on their trall, which wee found by their scouts to lead to the river at the.modth of Moon lion, a sheet distance above the ground on which these bullets were found. Opposite to the mouth of the run. is the head of a small island, often covered with extensive piles-of drift-wood.-- This island divides the stream that separates Seville Island from the southern shore. Here, at the mouth of this run, the party of settlers arrived In the night, and perceiving bright signs of the Indians being encamped on Neville Island, nearly opposite on the land now, or lately owned by Joseph_ }Titters, a council being held. they hastily resolved to cross over (the river being low at the time) and give the savages battle on their own ground, at all hazards. A short time before day, under cover of the darkness night, they moved onward under the guide end direction o a Mr. M., observing the utmost pro caution lest the Indians might. have observed their approach and surprise them from the drift-wood of this island. But no Indians in terrupted their onward march over the gravelly bar of the island. Here, a German who had accompanied the party thus for, and bean some what startled by the evident prospect of a fight, raw that this drift-wood would afford a safe shelter from a shower of bullets Ile quietly withdrew from the moving party, and unobserv ed secreted himself in the caverns of the drift pile, mid there awaited quietly the effect of the adventure. But a short time intervened until the firing from the assailing party commenced. A sharp resistance was made by the Indians for a short time from their encampment, but to no effect. A few well directed fires from the at tacking party soon decided the conflict. The Indians lied in all directions and soon disap peared under the grey twilight of the morning, leaving but one or two of their number dead on the ground. Ono of the Indians was - soon dis covered by the Dutchman, to . he making hasty steps for the dri ft -wood, no doubt to seek shel ter there from the raging storm of bullets, that were flying thick in every direction. But this wee more than our German had bargained for. As soon es the Indian bad approached within a convenient distance he was shot down by the for mer, and soon stripped of Lie pquoh, horn, and shoulder-strap. This curiously wrought and ornamented strap was still In the possession of some of the descendants of the same name of the leader of this party, (Mr. M—,)-at least the remains of it, until the time the story was rela ted to the writer some 16 years ago. The find ing of those bullets liar s ince brought up to the. mind of the writer the probability of some of those bullets haying been thrown there at the time of the circumstance herein related. And the Indian running for shelter in -the direction of the driftwood would lead us to conclude that the attack had been made from the opposite side of the Indian encampment: thus - throwing the bullets in thedireetion of where they were found. tither cirouthstances. may have occurred by which-these were put there, se there are evi dences on the, ground of en encampment. But this relation was made for the purpose of ac counting for the-production of those bullets by an oecnrrenee from which it might. seem prob able to Mornotras. _ _ 12Z3 RAILROAD ACClDlFT.—Alexander MeCdfferty, employed - se .a conductor on one of the freight trains on the Portage road, was instantly killed on Thursday last, by being run .over by two of the cars under his charge. It appears that Mc- Cafferty was considerably intoxicated, and had been advised, previous to starting from Johns teem, riot to go with the train. In reply to this advice, he asserted that he was se et to take care of himself aa any man was; and ender his ill conceived supposition he started on what proved a fatal trip to him. He managed to keep his position until the train passed No. 4, where he lost his balance and fall upon the track, the last twollhrs of his train passing over and man gling him in &horrible manner. He was picked op lifeless, and was shortly afterwards convey ed to Hollidaysburg. where he has left a wife and seven children to mourn his untimely death. —Eve.
