your pot again with the raw juice and proceed
as before. This is the proccsi of clarifying or
defecating, and_ IS absolutely,necessary, if you
do not wish to have a dark, dirty - spill), tasting
• of cane-stalks; and almost unfit for use.
After 'clarifying and': skimminethe second
pot-fall as directed, set it-back on the fire and
hall down as rapidly as possible. As the quan
tity reduces by boiling, keep adding fresh juice
from the first clarification, so as not to let the
syrup get too low in thepot, or it will get burn
ed. If any scum rises remove it with_ ybur
skimmer, and by following these directions you
cannot fail to make good syrup.
These directions proceed upon the supposi- '
tion thM, you have but one pot.- Of-course two
will very much facilitate the process, by keeping
one boiling while the 'other is cooling.
To mike extra syrup, filter the juice through
a flannel- , baibefore clatifying it. You may
know when it has boiled, enough. by pouring
some of:the liquid from a akimmer; a few drops
will remain on the edge, falling at intervals.—
If these. break with a long -string between,
which at. the. break jerks, back' to the dipper
again, ai which, when taken between the thumb
and finger, feels like molassee, it is fair...to sup
pose your syrup is sufficiently boiled,.and you

The case of Robert Small vs. Penna. Railroad
was tabus • up.:The facts, as alleged by the
plaintiff, appear to be that the Company agreed
to carry and! did carry a number of horses on
their train from this city to Philadelphia, in the
Spring or early Summer of 1855;' that the horses
_were put into a close ear; where there was not
smeicienc' air; that owing-to the beat thelorsea.
were sweat, hazily damaged, and one of them .
thrown down and severelyinjured by the sudden
stopping Of the train; that the Superintendent
of the stock department of the road ordered
holes to be cut in the car where the horses were,
and that another agent ht Harrisburg ordered
the car of abiek to be stopped unless the plaintiff
would pay for theAtunage done the car by cut
ting holes in it: &nail finally paid the damage
claimed. His horses were token-to Philadelphia,
several of them in a damaged condition, so much
so, as iti - alleied, as to be unsaleable. Mr. Small
brings his action for damages..

on 'Tuesday morning, charged with haying sent
a youneman named McLain to the post office to

fore Col. Wheat, Commissioner. of the U. 8.
Court.. 'The boy testified to his identity posi
tively.. A Mr. Stuart also testified that the at
cased Was. the same man who passed rapidly
through his yard, on Friday morning - but, pur
sued by Mr . Miller of the - post office, and oth
ers. Williams was committed io jail for a fur

by the bursting of a steam boiler. The explosion
blew to atoms the factory, a three ainry brick edifice
of 440 feet front, together with two three ittory brick
buildings adjoining, occupied of the time by several
hundred persons. One young Woman was taken

veiled this morning that Capt. Herndon and 15 pas
sengers of the Central America had arrived. -
The steamer Arabia which sailed from Liverpool
on the 19th is reported to hove passed Cape Race on
Tuesday morning. She will be due here to-morrow
with two days later advice! than those furulalted by

• Botrros, Oct. I.—The Concord Railroad bridge at
Hooksett, and the highway bridge, to the north of
the former together with a store, adjoining, have
been destroyed by fire. •
Owing., to ,the depressed state of trade, several
Lowell Companies have contracted for ti ship to be
imritedintely sent to Liverpool with 5000 bales of.
cotton.
